ANSYS Workbench Tutorial Video on Fatigue analysis | For queries send message on skype ID: engineeringtutorsdesk or mail engineeringtutorsdesk@gmail.com |
This video will take you through how to evaluate the fatigue failure and the fatigue analysis methods, high cycle fatigue, low cycle fatigue, stress life fatigue analysis, strain life fatigue analysis, fracture mechanics, SN curve for structural steel, Alternating stress vs Number of cycles, What is fatigue life, fatigue damage, Fatigue Safety Factor, Bi Axiality, Sensitivity Curve, What are the Mean Stress correction Theory, Goodman equation in Fatigue analysis, Von Mises Stress approach for fatigue analysis, Fatigue Strength Correction Factor
How to decide whether fatigue analysis is required
01. Component/structure type: Consider if the component experiences cyclic loading or repeated stress.
02. Loading conditions: Assess if the component is subjected to fluctuating or cyclic loads.
03. Material properties: Evaluate the susceptibility of the material to fatigue failure.
04. Operational lifespan: Determine if the component is expected to endure a large number of load cycles.
05. Safety criticality: Consider if the failure of the component could have severe consequences.
06. Regulatory requirements: Check if specific industry regulations or standards mandate fatigue analysis.
07. Past failures/known issues: Consider any previous fatigue failures or known fatigue-related problems.
Where/How to get the fatigue curve or SN curve of specific material
01. Experimental Testing: Conducting fatigue tests on specific materials or components provides real-world data to generate fatigue curves. These tests involve subjecting the material or component to cyclic loading under controlled conditions while measuring the number of cycles to failure.
02. Material Standards and Specifications: Many engineering materials have established standards or specifications that include fatigue data. These documents often provide S-N curves for different materials, including metals, composites, and polymers. Standards organizations such as ASTM, ISO, and SAE publish these standards.
03. Materials Databases: Several databases compile fatigue data from various sources, including experimental studies and research papers. These databases may require a subscription or membership for access. Examples include the NIST Materials Data Repository, the MatWeb database, and the Fatigue Data Handbook.
04. Published Research: Research papers, technical journals, and conference proceedings often present fatigue test results and S-N curves for specific materials or components. These publications can be found through academic databases, online libraries, or by directly contacting researchers in the field.
05. Industry Guidelines and Handbooks: Certain industries have guidelines or handbooks that provide fatigue curves specific to their applications. For example, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) provides fatigue design guidance for steel structures, including S-N curves for various steel grades.

Nice video! What if I would need to create a new material in engineering data? For instance I would need to add the S690QL steel. Do you know any website or any place in the internet that gives you the tabular data for these applications? And maybe data necessary for plasticity settings? Also I have a question related to the loads considered by the fatigue tool: I should make a simulation of a flange with bolt pretensions and some external loads. I don't know how to let the fatigue understand that the bolt pretension should not be considered as a cyclic load! Thank you in advance.

Thanks a lot for this important tutorial...... My question is that...is it possible to know the maximum stress of fatigue analysis at a given number of cycles in ANSYS WB? as it is known we input the alternating stress vs the number of cycles in engineering data from experimental result and we can get the fatigue life of the material that can survive before failure, but how can i know a stress at a specific number of cycles...

Hi, very good video! I'm starting with my first fatigue analysis and this video explains very well the steps to do. The only thing I did't understand is why you used the fully reversed option when the load is from 0 to -200 N and not from -200 to 200. Wouldn't be better to use the zero based option? thanks

@feynman_QED
@feynman_QED 7 лет назад
Before someone explains, you first have to explain what are you talking about. In any case, 3999 MPa is out of the world, you must have done something wrong 101%. One possible mistake is material data you've entered are wrong.

any comment about Biaxiality indication?? thanks for video!
@mechengineer6724
@mechengineer6724 3 года назад
Biaxiality indicator tells you whether loading experience by the part is pure shear, uniaxial or biaxial. İf Biaxiality indicator value is -1 pure shear condition 0 uniaxial, 1 biaxial condition. For example you get -1 so it is pure shear condition.From the fatigue tool details , you choose stress component as max shear , you will get more accurate and sensitive result for your simulation.

@Theo2482
@Theo2482 7 лет назад
Thanks for the video, very helful! One comment. You give a practical example in 7:30 "In actual consider the Fatigue Life for a body to be 24.000 cycles and we are loading the body for 1 hour each day, then the expected model life would be 1.000 days". How do you come to this conclusion? Let's say that we have a static loading on a body which lasts some time. For example we have a steel body which takes a load of 10tn, the load remains on the body for some given time and then the load is removed. We make the static analysis in ANSYS and we find that the minimum fatigue life is 10.000 cycles. In practice we put a load of 10tn for 60mins (static loading) and then we remove it. How do we calculate the fatigue life in hours? Thanks in advance.
@ANSYS-India
@ANSYS-India 7 лет назад
+Theo Fatigue is cyclic loading
@Theo2482
@Theo2482 7 лет назад
Right, but what is the effect of the time the load is acting on the body on each cycle?
@tomasreynoso1161
@tomasreynoso1161 6 лет назад
It does not depend on the time. Fatigue design is based on number of cicles, in the books says that it's independent of the time application of the load for the practice, you can download free the book "Design of machine elements, by Robert L. Mott". I hope i helped you!.
@Theo2482
@Theo2482 6 лет назад
Yes, that's right, fatigue is dependent on number of cycles. In the video and actually on point 7:30, he says that if we get from Ansys a fatigue life of 24000 and the load acts for 1 hour per day, then the model life will be 1000days. If fatigue life is independent of the time force stays on the body, why do we have a fatigue life of 1000 days and not 24.000 days? Remember that we have 24.000 cycles fatigue life.
@tobiasschonwetter9955
@tobiasschonwetter9955 5 лет назад
@@Theo2482 Because you stress the the part 24 times per day (1cycle per hour). If you have a total of 24000 cycles according to this load, it makes 1000 days (24000 divided by 24 cycles per day).
