I think maximum principal stress theory is for brittle conditions and von mises is for ductile conditions. Can you please clarify on that

Yes, for brittle materials we use Maximum normal stress as they suffer under tensile loading condition from Normal stress, but ductile materials suffer from Share stress. Therefore, Tresca and Von Misses are used for ductile type of materials, while Maximum Normal stress or Principle stress theory is used for Brittle materials.
