Hi, in today's tea break fix we have a DECT cordless phone where the segments on the LCD display have vanished. Watch it come back to life. Many thanks, Vince :-)
Great idea for a series. I'm a big fan of repair channels, but usually don't have to time to watch anything over 30 minutes, so these are great. Thank you!
EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!! I bought an Excalibur LCD Chess Computer on Ebay and the display on it was showing partial images scattered haphazardly all over the place. I was just about to throw it out but searched for repair options and came across your excellent video!!!! I improvised a heating iron by heating a single-edged razor blade on the stove, holding it with pliers. I wanted the straight edge of the blade to be my "iron". It took 5 tries with gradual improvements with each try. It finally works perfectly just like new!!!! WOW! Thank you so much!!!!!!
Great fix Vince. Like the format, but also love the long vids too. I keep checking Patreon every day to see if you've signed up. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you finally join, you have a lot of grateful fans who appreciate the time and effort you devote to your content.
Top man; followed your tip and recovered the LCD screens on two phones; all segements as good as new. My tip is you don't need a soldering iron, a 30 sec blast with a hairdryer and then pressing along the ribbon line on the contacts with a platic tipped tool does the trick.
If your looking for greater revenue, merch is the way to go. Not just there in GB, but you can even have a shipping point from the US to lessen cost. Plenty of vendors, there’s one here in the city (Knoxville, Tennessee) where I live. I know the IT guy there. Love the channel, long and short videos.
Lovely fix Vince! My grandmother had the same issue with her phone and thanks to you it’s working perfectly. I can’t thank you enough mate. Your content has givin me so much joy and I’ve finally been able to put it to use. Cheers!
I like this series idea. It's at a easier level, more like practical skills that I could do at home rather than a serious pizzle (although of course I enjoy those kinds of videos just as much!)
Ohhh wow. Right around the time you'd done this fix, I'd seen some other RU-vidrs using the same technique on old Game Boys. The way the Game Boy gurus love to teach it is to do it with the power on and the display within sight, so you can use the lines flickering on and off as a guide for where to apply more heat. Brilliant how you were able to cinch it so quickly without a visual guide.
Vince I appreciate that you are trying new stuff in your videos but I love your regular "trying to fix" videos. I love that even if you don't have success you still keep us along for the ride either way. Maybe you could do a mix of both. And someone before mentioned this and I'll second it. Start a Patreon! Loads of us want to support you and enjoy your videos. Please keep up with great job you do. Cheers from the states!(Michigan)👍
Hi Vince, may i suggest another thing you could do on your channel? Well basically it is the same, but different. How to videos, but for more crafty/freaky things, maybe going into a more technical/electrical detail. i.e. Transform an old PS2 (or something else) into a mobile console. Install DOSBOX on a Nintendo Wii to play retro DOS games. Convert a NES gamepad to work with a Commodore C64. Or some DIY electronics, like a digital wall clock, maybe putting it into the case of something broken so it looks fancy and special. Add an "Audio in" headphone jack to a car radio which does not have one. Remove old speakers from a car and put them into wooden frames so you can use them with another device in the house. Convert an old CAR radio to work on a power supply in the house and attach an antenna to it. You could maybe add videos with a mindset of asking "Can you do it? - Instead of - Should you do it?" "Does it make sense or have any practical application? Maybe not. Is it fun to make and fun to watch or does it look fancy? Heck yeah."
Since you are doing shorter videos now, consider investing in studio lights and microscope camera if doing microsoldering. Brighter picture means more information to the viewer and allows you edit down the video to shorter lengths with optional voice over since the audience can pause the video.
I don't mid the short video but knowing it will be fixed right away is sad :( missed the excitement of seeing it working because i knew it was going to work
Possibly just me, but I also like the fixing your own (atleast it feels like) stuff, rather than buy on ebay. Since that is more close to heart to other people, and more useful to the fixer.
Missing the blue mat.. but love the new experiment, glad that trying to fix wont die! This series gave me the confidence to widen my trying to fix comfort zone, so I feel terrible that my adblockers might have played a part in killing it :( Please start a patreon soon. I plan to create an account to support you.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time & trouble to make & post your videos. Inspired me to have a go at fixing a pair of watch winders. Both working perfectly again 👍
Absolutely love your channel! I have a semi new multimeter (cheap stock), whom suddenly got a bad display. I deduce from your content; duo to me recklessly leaving it in direct sunlight; the heat have caused the adhesive of the cord to loosen. Hopefully a simple fix.
This is why I hate the adhesive method of connecting the LCD to the tracks of the PCB (known as hot bar method). Those tend to fail over time when the adhesive wears out. I prefer using all zebra strips instead.
You know what you could do? Livestream, then you will get the whole repair for those who wants unedited and then a quick edit fix, then you save time and also reach another audience
I have the same problem with my home phone I’m going to try this and see if it sorts it’s, as mentioned I’ve done the dmg lines before so I’m optimistic :) keep it up vince, Haynes manuals are going out the window in 2050 or whatevs it’s going to be vinces fixes that people buy and read! 👍🏻
when Elliot does a fix to a Gameboy screen, he leaves the batteries in, so he can see his progress on the screen as he goes...would have been more satisfying fix visually, if you had done it that way too
Nice! People will hate me for suggesting this, but... But... You could always break up your "Trying to Fix" videos into 4 parts or something, to make them a more manageable size....
May as well post here, I have a 22 year old lcd alarm clock, still works great but one tiny part of the display has a missing piece so a 8 misses i of the 7 lines, strangely now and again it works and when it does it lasts for a few days, I did take the screws out and wipe down the circuit with 99% IPA but it didn't fix it, I was thinking of rubbing a barely warm solder iron over the cable like what fixes a Game Boy lcd, but not sure if that would work.
If you don't like the idea of making your Patreon live what about a P.O box where people can send you items? Might get some decent stuff and would add to the mystery even though half of it would probably be unfixable
How do I fix a distorted display that the display lays on the mother board it touches the metallic parts on the mother board. It’s not connected any other way. Can you tell I’m not knowledgeable in this area? LOL! I really want to fix it because it’s to my exercise gazelle.
