Found flux in my microwave circuitry also. "Made in China", same experience with initial "Made in Japan" decades back. Iterative learning curve, as they keep moving production to new places.

I'm curious how the rubber strip comes into play to push display on LCD? Is there light shining through the rubber strip? Does the rubber strip have to be perfectly aligned with slots/holes on the strip and PCB? etc
I've heard of these being cleaned only for them to last 2 years. How do they last 8 years or so to begin with then have to be cleaned every couple of years. Is there some coating you can put on them to contact better, or will a good clean fix it for a long time? Just wondering really what the cause of the problem is, I don't see how these can corrode if not really exposed to much water or moisture at all. I'm thinking has anybody used some sort of conductive coating that you can apply individually to every contact/segment. Thanks.
When they relocate electronics factories, it's usually for cheaper production, and cheaper comes from inexperience - as in no cleanup of flux on the soldered circuits. And flux is corrosive. It shouldn't need repeated cleaning. It should've been done at the factory, and if it wasn't, once should do it.
