Hi, in this video I attempt to fix up this unusual vintage horse racing board game, made in England by KAY London. I am not sure of the age, and I can't find out any information on this game. I guess it is approx. 60 to 70 years old, so around the 1950s. Let me know what you think. I found this one different and interesting. I hope you enjoy it.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I wonder whether this was given as a Christmas or birthday gift. I wonder how many hands it's passed through. Can you imagine the pure excitement you'd experience receiving this as a kid in the 50s or 60s? Love it.

The minute I saw the battery space I knew it was a 4.5 volt. Commonly used in bicycle lamps back in the day. The two copper prongs could be pulled up to make contact. I very much enjoyed this one. Thanks.

I think the 2 bulbs lighting together indicated a dead heat (tie) when 2 horses pass the winning post together? Loved this video, old retro toys are brilliant fixes... Bringing them back to life 👍👍

Ah, the bakelite switch and screw-in bulbs, so nostalgic (giving my age away there). As a 10 year old, I wired my bedroom with an alarm connected to homemade 'pressure mats' on the landing (very hit & miss with lots of false alarms 😂) which lit bulbs and rang electric bell when triggered. Switches, Bulb holders, electric bells etc. were so cheap then from the Army surplus store. Really enjoyed your fix here Vince. 👍

Every time I start watching a My Mate Vince video about an old toy it's like "no, it's an old toy". But I *always* end it up feeling: "what a passionate, lovely fix". That's it Vince, you can always make something that may be perceived as boring on a first look extremely interesting and a huge part of it is again, how passionate you are with every item you fix. Thanks for another 40 minutes of pure entertainment, glad to be a Patreon and encourage everyone watching this to become one yourself!

Love this video. It should be played in Primary schools to show that all electrical things don't have to be circuit boards and components but other things conduct electricity and can be used to make things work as long as the circuit itself connects.

I love stuff like this. I've got a lot of older toys simply due to nostalgia that are worthless but I love them and I like keeping them working and cleaned up. This was a super chill video and I'm glad to see you got it up and running, again.

This is a wonderful toy, and I love the box and artwork in it. I would have guessed 1940's, but 1950's could be right. This could probably be sold in an antique shop for decent money.

I, as a member of "The Geriatric Jet Set," I am thrilled to see toys from my era. As we are outnumbered by the younger generation of electro-technology persons. Being our technology was mechanical and included vacuum tubes and macro transistors and theirs has microprocessors. Our bad eyes and need of big screens for viewing, lessen our numbers in this streaming age. But we are here and revel in your content. My Great grandfather was born in 1899. I was amazed hearing him talk about the progression of technology that I took for granted in my youth and seeing what changed in my lifetime, Well... I enjoy watching you tinker with things, especially the rolls. Thank you!

Hello from Russian viewer. In Soviet Russia, we had similar toys, but they were more roulette like type things Or "guess the animal" with a pen like stylus. If i had one, i want to put small motor under that horse disk, and a small sound chip with horserace sounds. Stylised 50s Push button on the side, when you press it, it starts 5 seconds spin disk and plays sounds.

Very nice to see an old toy like this repaired :) Never seen this kind of toy myself, perhaps my parents could've had something like this available in their childhood (both born in the 50's). I guessed the battery type though, used to see old pocket lamps with the flat battery type seen in the video. Now I have a modernized version of that retro pocket lamp with LED light and it uses now just AA batteries.

I believe that after WW2 there was a large amount of cheap aluminium available surplus from the aircraft industry. This is why Land Rover used aluminium panels, MGA body panels, and even some kit houses of the time were made using it. If this game is from 1950's then that may explain the aluminium foil. In many years of trying I have never managed to solder to aluminium wire, despite it supposedly being possible.
