I tend to just let my mind wander in random directions when im trying to sleep. If its saying or thinking random stuff, just try to avoid thinking too hard about it but also just let the thoughts keep rambling and eventually you'll fall asleep. I dont know if that made sense but its what I do to fall asleep instead of being hung up thinking bout something specific

In my experience Wim Hoff breathing is guaranteed to make you fall asleep in a few minutes.

When I have trouble sleeping I count my breaths up to 10 and start over. But I also don't just count them I visualize the shape of the number, usually like sand in a desert or flowers in a meadow or something similar to that, I work towards making my breaths as slow and shallow as possible until I eventually drift off

I'd agree anything that stimulates the brain is going to keep you awake. It is why I lose all sense of time playing RTS like Hearts of Iron 3; where it will be 6 in the morning, and I started playing it at Midnight.

I've found that if I'm trying to sleep and think of some philosophical question that doesn't have a solid solution or answer, I'd go sleep faster..

speaking of "awake" and "math", I remember this one time... the setting is a bit weird but bear with me: I had to swap shifts with a guy at a certain time and usually I woke up 15 minutes before the time, put a 5 minute timer, go back to sleep and wake up after those 5 minutes have passed and have 10 minutes to ready up for the swap. But this one guy came up to wake me early (probably because he've been screwd over before) and he's "MainGoldDragon" (yes that's my actual full legal name) I got "Mhm ?" He's like "Wake up" and respond "i'm awake" and he goes "Alright, what's 7 times 5 ?" and I'm like is this dude serious? and obviously I respond with "35". Then he walked away.

i normally make up a nice story either of some series anime or whatever and act as if im already dreaming

If I do math before sleep I get dreams about math. The university level kind. And it usually involves me trying to solve some hard problem by making nonsense conjectures. Often those dreams become nightmares when I realize something I did was wrong, and I get stuck trying to do it over and over again (and even after getting it right I tell myself that I failed and start over), and I start to get stressed and suddenly the math problem becomes part of a test that I'm about to fail... I recently had a dream about trying to calculate some integral but getting stuck on multiplying the result by 3, and that made me wake up stressed at 4AM. Anyone else having similar experiences?
