You missed that she was talking about "The Ship of Theseus", kind of confuses the whole topic when you subtitle the word as "this".

Fauna talked about String Theory a while ago. This time she talked about the Theseus' Ship Paradox. Mama Nature is big brain.

It's actually more complicated than Theseus' Ship Paradox. Our brain only has 2.5% compared to body weight. Replace frontal is equal to 1% of body weight. But yes, you have complete different personality and identity crisis

A lesson learned from the Ship of Theseus is that it's easy get caught up in labels and categories in what is considered the new ship versus the old ship, when really it's a refurbished ship with newer ship parts. If we apply this to brain transplants, we can say that the person doesn't lose any of his self identity and becomes less of himself, but rather that his personality changed, and his identity is altered, but not lost.

Wow fauna, what an interesting topic. If you think about it, we don't need a brain transplant to say we are a different person bcs we are always changing all through our life. As moments keep passing by, we keep building new memories and our personality constantly trying to adapt to it. So we are never really the same person. That is if we only look at one point at a time but what if we look at the bigger picture and start counting not each but every moment of our life. Then we are always the same person. I guess the same line of thought can be applied to the famous concept 'The Ship of Theseus'.

It's easier to respond when you're talking about conscious animals such as humans than say an object. Your consciousness is the part of you that allows for awareness of self. "You" are the observant part that witnesses all of the experiences, inputs and processes inside and outside. An object does not have this. And it's hard to conclude whether it has an essence to keep.

brain transplant works like swapping ssd/hdd from one pc to another. it will run the same os, programs, etc on the new system. you just need a bit adaptation like installing proper drivers. partial brain transplant on the other hand is like swapping C drive to a new pc, it may or may not work depending on how it was previously used.

I mean all of your cells in your body are replaced over the course of around 7years so.. We really are the ship of Theseus in a weird way. Only our neurons aren't replaced so I don't know what that means for the analogy. Does that mean we technically are always the same person because those neurons aren't replaced? Are neurons who we really are and everything else is just the vessel they're in, like we're a flesh mech for the neurons? That is my existential crisis for the day! Thanks Fauna!
