Glad to see this episode for URIAH HEEP, a band that deserves so much more respect than they get. Very important band in the foundation and history of Heavy Music.
Thank you guys for your picks. My picks: 70’s *Look at Yourself 80’s *Head First 90’s *Sea of Light 2000’s *Wake the Sleeper 2010’s *Living the Dream 🎤🎸🎵🥁
Watching this reminds me that when my father passed away, my mother gave me his vinyls collection and i do have a Uriah Heep record, Look at yourself, and i never listened to it. In fact, i never heard any Uriah Heep song. Today's gonna be my introduction to the Heep.
@@Mike-aka747 It's a very good album. I realise one thing, i'm a Ghost fan and a lot of people are saying that Ghost are not really metal, but more like Uriah Heep, and listening to the title track, i underdstand. That could easily be a Ghost song. Got a Purple vibe to it with the organ (Hammond B3?). Progy sometimes. Really liked it. I'm gonna dig in their discography this week.
My favorite album...Tears In my Eyes! You have my favorite Heep album. I was picked on by my friends for being a Heepster! Welcome to the Uriah Heep Club! Get their Uriah Heep Live - January 1973. It is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded by any group. In June 2021 I turned 62 and to celebrate my birthday, I cranked "Uriah Heep Live" and I just sat there realizing that I have been listening to this album for 47 years. I play my keyboards while listening to Uriah Heep Live, doing a duo with Hensley playing the song "Gypsy"... Hensley on mini-Moog and me on my new Moog Matriarch Analog Synthesizer! Yes...I have a Moog Matriarch Dark and it is a phenominal keyboard (only$1,999.98 on Amazon [I bought it from Amazon because my son works for Amazon]).
Another great show! Thanks Pete and company! 70's - Salisbury (For today...Could have picked another 4 or 5 albums) 80's - Abominog 90's - Sea of Light 00's - Wake the Sleeper 10's - Living the Dream
Here's My Picks. 70's - Demons and Wizards (Hard Choice) 80's - Abominog 90's - Sea of Light 00's - Wake the Sleeper 10's - Living the Dream That's All Folks!
I don't believe that Heep had 10 albums with Byron...just one really, really long album released in 10 parts because until "Firefly", Uriah Heep never changed styles...very consistent band. I just hope I'll live for at least 10 to 20 years more so I can listen to my Uriah Heep CD's!
Heep is my favorite band.Got to meet the band in 73.Hensley bought my wife and I a drink at the motel gave us a back stage pass.Very cool guy.Box was passing around a bottle of wine after the show.Hensley ignored all the writers and shook my hand and thanked me for coming.Once in a lifetime
One of the great British classic rock bands who sometimes get overlooked with perhaps more love given to Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath. Heep deserve their place as a seminal band. Fave albums of the decades. 70s Look At Yourself (but there are a number of truly great albums in this era) 80s Abominog (a few great albums in this decade also) 90s Sea of Light (particularly love Raging Silence too) 00s Wake The Sleeper 2010+ Into The Wild (Heep continue to turn out fine music)
The first album is my favorite of the entire catalog. Gypsy is one of the best album openers of all time,to me their heaviest song that just happened to help invent an entire genre.
I know I'm late, but as a huge Heep fan since 1970 - I was then nine years old! - I have to tell you my choice too: 70's Look At Yourself (favourite song: Shadows of Grief) 80's Conquest (Am I really the only one? Favourite song: Out on the Street) 90's Sonic Origami (Between two Worlds) 00's Wake the Sleeper (What kind of God) 10's Into the Wild (Trail of Diamonds) Thanks for your enthusiasm for the soundtrack of our life :)
@Ivo Haze granted B.E. cuts back on the solo's but the SONG'S are there and I don't mind the modern production..but I can understand your statement too.
I went for: 1970's - Demons and Wizards 1980's - Conquest (not a popular choice, but I like it!) 1990's - Sea of Light 2000's - Wake the Sleeper 2010's - Outsider ... but the 70's stuff is so good it's really an difficult choice - could have picked any one of them!
i don't think I was aware that Uriah Heep continued past the seventies until I subscribed to this channel. Thanks guys, and thanks to the people commenting here, I know what albums to check out. As for the 70'a, it's always been Demons and Wizards. But I had no idea - talk about late to the party!
I have been listening to Uriah Heep Live since 1974 (2 years after release) and you 110% correct...it is the greatest live album of all time! It is the best of Uriah Heep's first 5 albums. Just a shame they didn't play the song "The Magicians Birthday"...oh well! My second favorite live album was "USA" by King Crimson (should have been a double album, but...oh well)! Live well, brother Heepster!
70’s Sweet Freedom - Such a beautiful album. The title track and “If I Had the Time” have some of Ken Hensley’s most emotional songwriting and as a bass player, Gary Thain is killing it on that album. The three preceding albums are all very close. 80’s Abominog - A really cool AOR/hard rock album with tinges of metal. A very different band than the 70’s but still enjoyable. I haven’t explored the Heep catalog much after this and it sounds like I need to.
This was tough. Such a solid catalog. - 1070s: Demons And Wizards (the first five are so good... and I really like "Firefly", too) - 1980s: Abominog (one of my favorites of the whole catalog) - 1990s: Sea Of Light (a bit long, but most CDs were at the time) - 2000s: Wake The Sleeper (the only one, but maybe my overall favorite of theirs) - 2010s: Living The Dream (a back-to-basics hard rocking album) Thanks for the video, Pete, Ryan, Rick, and Rick's file cabinets! :)
In the late 70s there was a TV documentary about Heavy Metal. They interviewed an old rocker. ‘Who’s your favourite band?’ ‘Uriah Heep’ ‘Why?’ ‘Pardon’ (A bit louder) ‘Why?’ ‘Pardon’ (Now shouting) ‘Why are they your favourite band?’ ‘Because they’re bloody loud’. I went out and bought Fallen Angel. Stopped listening after Headway, so I’m going have to go & re-discover them.
Gave sonic origami a listen after watching this. Nice surprise to hear a cover of survivor's across the miles. Too hot to sleep is such an underrated album. Thanks rick (love sonic too).
Ryan I agree with your sentiment that Heep are great live. Staying in South Africa we have not the opportunity to see this kind of caliber band very often. Saw a package tour. Wishbone Ash, Heep and Purple. I think Heep edged the other two, who were both very good.
Saw Heep open for Rainbow in 77 and Tull in 79 and they were absolutely amazing one of my favorite bands of all time !!! So hard to choose a favorite album but if I had to I would pick "Deamons" for me along with "Magicians" represents the night of their creativity altho I could choose any of their catalogue as favorite or best!!! Just a great band that deserves more respect and praise then they have received!!!👍👍👍
@@seaoftranquilityprog amen brother!!! That Rainbow Heep show was my 4th concert and remains the loudest best show I've ever seen also the Tull show was at MSG when they broadcast live to Russia what a night 3 complete sets and nobody would leave after a half hour they came back out and played Equaling and Locomotive Breath again and Ian told everyone they had to leave because they had nothing else to play!!! Those were the days indeed!!! Love your channel the best on YT thanks for all you guys do!!!👍👍👍
70s - Demons and Wizards 80s - Raging Silence 90s - Sea of Light 00s - Wake the Sleeper (the only one in the 2000s, but it deserves the mention in any case) 10s - Living the Dream
I got into Uriah Heep through the Flaming Lips. My friend heard me listening to "At War with the Mystics" and commented that some of the tracks were reminiscent of Uriah Heep and so here I am... a Heep fanatic.
MY FAVORITES 70s: LOOK AT YOURSELF-DEMONS AND WIZARDS-THE MAGICIANS BIRTHDAY-FIREFLY 80s: ABOMINOG 90S: SEA OF LIGHT 2000s: WAKE THE SLEEPER 10s: LIVING THE DREAM 20s: CHAOS & COLOR
Look At Yourself (any record with 'July Morning' seals it for me) Raging Silence (Shaw and Lanzon just injected so much life into the band) Sea of Light (enjoy so many Bolder sung songs) Wake the Sleeper (default) Living the Dream (fine record and nice review by Martin Popoff)
Glad to see Ryan and Rick co-captain this episode. And for the first time, my choices would be the same as Ryan's. Demons & Wizards was my introduction to the band thanks to my younger sister bringing the album home. Still haven't tired of listening to that album. Like RIck, all three around that time have my attention but in picking one, Demons & Wizards takes the prize. And some cool album covers don't translate to the CD era - Look At Yourself being a prize candidate for that matter. And Rick's consistent positive attitude and passion is always fun to watch. Thanks, Pete, Rick and Ryan for a great show on a great band.
70s Uriah Heep Live (if that's cheating then Demons) Live was the first Heep I bought and the album that made me a fan! 80s Abominog 90s Sea Of Light 00s Wake The Sleeper 2010s and beyond Living The Dream
All 3 of you seemed to be in agreement overall, as with I as well. Demons & Wizards, Abominog, Sea of Light ( Cover art helped ). I haven’t heard anything since Sonic Organimi.
My older brother's friend worked for Showco back in the seventies and toured with a lot of bands in the seventies including Uriah Heep. I heard the stories. When I saw Spinal Tap I knew they were based on that band.
Growing up teen years in the 1970's. Pop music as always dominated. Juke boxes even in the best pubs had top 20 hits plus some oldies. In Oxford Whites Bar was an exception. Even then it was mostly better trendy pop like Roxy Music. However they had two amazing songs which could be found in no other pub. Rocky Mountain Way, Joe Walsh and Gypsy Uriah Heep. When you heard Duh Duh Duh Da Duh Duh Duh the opening riff for Gypsy roar across the crowded bar it was another amazing moment. Uriah Heep just were not cool around my circle, but I liked them. Like Wishbone Ash. You were only cool if you liked Zep. Purple were above Heep. I never looked at it that way. Just look who stood the test of time and longevity. I can't split Heep, Purple or Wishbone Ash. They all bring something different to the table. Zep was the first band I ever saw but I've got more value for money out of these three plus Alex Harvey, Early Genesis, Magnum and Marillion. Today we are blessed with so many great bands form Europe and the USA. The rock snobs in my day missed a trick in the Heep.
I'm only just getting into Uriah Heep in recent years. You would think that being English I would have been into them for years...but no...unfortunately, for no reason whatsoever they were a band that passed me by. Better late than never eh. Cool show, helps me...so thanks Pete and co 👍
My favorite Heep album is Salisbury, but I consider Look at yourself as their greatest! I was never interested in anything they recorded after Firefly, after all, when Hensley left the band, the Heep ended...
1970's Demons and wizards a second close is Firefly. 1980's Head first a close second is Raging silence. 1990's Sea of light a second close is Different world . 2000's Into the wild a very close second depending on the day is Living the dream.
70's Magicians Birthday( Sunrise Sweet Lorraine. some good ballads on it as well. And of course the title track which goes through with lengthy song that is amazing on the keys guitar drums bass and a brilliant ending track to the name of the album). The 70's they sure were cranking out the albums from the first to the last one in the decade) All are good albums with good stuff. It's hard but for decade wise Magician's Birthday. In ranking albums Look At Your Self Demons And Wizards rank high as well. 80's Abominog( All the songs sound good.* On The Rebound did well of the Russ Ballard cover*) Rockin and nice tunes that keep someone me listening) 90's Sea Of Light( Nice sounding with yes prog rock and good sounds 00s Wake The Sleeper(Rockin lifting album for their comeback. 10s Into The Wild( Pretty much in the groove, Do like it.- While I have heard Living The Dream haven't pulled into it but takes time to hear some more times} Btw the mention I made is for Ryan to that of Russ Ballard from the band Argent who became solo artist and wrote and did songs that other artists would cover, for all in the New York area he did and wrote the original "New York Groove" that the band Hello in 75 would cover and of course Ace Frehley of KISS on Ace's KISS solo album. There's an honorable comment for everyone.🎶🎸🎤🥁🎹
Hey pete I love the show very much my favorite of the 70s is sweet freedom 80s amigoag 90s sea of light 2is wake the sleeper 2010s living the dream if you do s show of deep purple though the years I I would love to on and give a fans point of view been a fan almost since day one thank you for the amazing work you do you are the best
First Uriah Heep album I heard was The Best Of. First studio album I bought was Firefly, which I loved a lot, still do even it is mellower than the restof 70’s issues of theirs. Per decades, I would pick Look at Yourself Abominog Sea of Light Wake the Sleeper Living the Dream And for 2020’s we are still waiting, right?
In the day, Heep was one of "my bands". But, it was all about the Gary Thain-era for me. All those LPs + Look At Yourself. I keep sayin' I'm gonna get the 1st 2 albums...so far, not. D&W was my 1st Heep album. Bought it (14-years old) at a JC Penny's. Never heard of them. The name was cool. The cover was cooler. I was very happy with this purchase. By age 19 ("young" according to Ryan. OK), I was buying Bitches Brew, RTF, Weather Report, & Mahavishnu. ;-)
Have you guys checked out the new original KKs Priest song called "Hellfire Thunderbolt" of their new forthcoming album? It was just released! Just this song. Bad fucking ass!!!
Ryan my son just bought me the magicians birthday t-shirt for Christmas he bought demons and wizards shirt to can't believe he listened to me blab about heep that one day
My Pics: 70s Magician´s Birthday 80:s Abominog 90s Sonic Origami 20s Sea of light (Sorry to say I never heard Wake the sleeper.. A hard record to get) 10s Living the dream
My mother loved "What Should Be Done" and loved Byron's singing. My mom was in her 60's and an accordion player in her youth, playing in my grandfather's Ompapa band in Germany after the war (guess which war)!
Wetton will be missed...the great Progressive musicians are leaving us... Wetton, Emerson, Lake, Holdsworth, Jobson, and so many others...I am getting old...time to go play my Moog Matriarch Dark Synthesizer to brush away the years!
I would have to go with 70's: Demons & Wizards, 80's: Abominog (the most of the least), 90's: Sonic origami 00's: Wake the Sleeper 10's: Living the Dream. I really dislike the cheesy keyboards and bad drum sounds of the 80's, which is what ruins Abominig for me. It's a HUGE letdown from 70's Heep! Those and the latter ones are the best for me. I LOVE the Heep over the last 15 years.
