Toots & the Maytals - Funky Kingston (Mango, 1973) Toots Hibbert was there before reggae even existed, putting out ska and rocksteady singles throughout the 60s, fusing the soul of Curtis Mayfield with the grit of Otis Redding and the funk of James Brown. The Maytals deserved to be just as big as Bob Marley & the Wailers, and for a hot second in 1973, it seemed like they just might be.

Hi Pete. Dave here. My pick today is A DAY AT THE RACES by QUEEN, which brings back memories of England's long hot summer of 1976. me moving to London to start work after graduation, and attending a free concert in Hyde Park. Queen were top of the bill (Kiki Dee and Steve Hillage were also on it) and they were unveiling songs from their soon to be released 5th album. First time I'd seen them live since they came to my university on the Queen II tour, and once again they were magnificent.

No. 9. Naked Eyes - Naked Eyes. 😃👍. Striking debut released in March 1983 on Chrysalis Records in the USA. Everyone has heard “Promises, Promises” and the single version of “Always Something There To Remind Me.” My favorite tracks are “Fortune and Fame,” “Voices In My Head,” “Could Be” and “I Can Show You How.” I have loved this bittersweet synth-pop album for decades with its shimmering synthesizers and catchy songs.. 🔥. Great choice from Pete today. My choice today is a compilation from an artist that is not especially typical SOT material, QUEEN OF SOUL by the late, great much missed ARETHA FRANKLIN. 24 sublime slices of soul, pop and rnb and those magnificent vocals and with most of Aretha's best known and best loved songs. Her background from when she was a young girl had been in gospel music and that permeates just about everything she does. There are her great more mainstream pop hits like Respect (what a incredible vocal on this), her versions of Carole King's Natural Woman and Burt Bacharach's I Say A Little Prayer (THE definitive version of that song INHO), Spanish Harlem, You're All I Need To Get By, and Until You Come Back To Me, which alone show the lady's vocal prowess and versatility and are perfect listening and chilling out to for those summer days. On top of that are wonderful emotional soulful ballads like, Angel, Ain't No Way, Call Me and I'm In Love, the latter if any proof be needed showing her amazing vocal range. There are classic soul cuts such as I Never Loved A Man, Dr Feelgood and Dont Play That Song. On top of this you get some of the rockiest rnb youre likely to hear with the likes of Chain Of Fools, Since You've Been Gone (no not That song), Save Me, Think, the salacious See Saw and Rock Steady all of which feature some of the best and most sublime hard rock vocals ever recorded, even if the music couldnt quite be labelled that. It is no wonder that a generation of first wave rock singers, the likes of Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Paul Rodgers, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, David Coverdale, Lou Gramm, Sammy Hagar and more, list this lady as one of their prime vocal influences. Genius is sometimes an overused word in the music business but when one adds in the fact that Aretha was a highly accomplished pianist and wrote or co wrote a lot of her songs I have no hesitation in proclaiming her one. Queen of Soul, Queen of vocalists for me.

9) Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Plays Monterey The "Summer Of Love" began with the three-day Monterey International Pop Music Festival, which was staged at the Monterey County Fairgrounds during mid-June of 1967. An estimated 200,000 people converged on the Northern California site for the heavily hyped event which embodied the counterculture scene that was going down in nearby San Francisco. The template for future Rock festivals included performances from The Who, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, plus the first major American onstage appearance by Jimi Hendrix. Introduced by the Rolling Stones' Brian Jones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience took the stage and let loose with a free-jammin' set that showcased the incredible fretboard prowess of the electric gypsy with the inverted Strat. America finally caught on to what those in England were raving about as Hendrix, along with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell rolled through a supersonic set of covers and originals. Jimi Plays Monterey captures the spirit of the legendary performance. Leading off with "Killing Floor", followed by "Foxey Lady", and an extended swing through Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone", the nine-song set peaks with the five-minute "Hey Joe", the sweeping "The Wind Cries Mary", and the psychedelic rush of "Purple Haze". The searing performance concluded with a heavy-on-distortion remake of The Troggs' power riffin' "Wild Thing", which Jimi finished on his knees at the altar of his burning Fender axe, screaming with feedback. One of my favorite live recordings, I have owned this in so many forms over the years. If you're a Hendrix fan, casual or otherwise, this is absolutely not to be missed. Favorite Tracks: "Killing Floor" "Like A Rolling Stone" "Hey Joe" "The Wind Cries Mary" "Purple Haze" "Wild Thing" 1) Terry Reid - Seed Of Memory 2) The B-52s - S/T 3) Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees 4) American Graffiti Soundtrack 5) Weezer - White Album 6) Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 7) Squeeze - Argybargy 8) Chuck Berry - The Great Twenty-Eight 9) Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Plays Monterey

Pick #9: Panic! at the Disco's Pretty. Odd. Might be a bit of a weird choice if you'd only heard tracks from basically every other release they made, but Pretty Odd is honestly just a really great Beatles/Beach Boys sounding record and probably one of the biggest left turns of any band jumping from album to album in the last 20 years or so, going from an emo/pop punk album with some electronic stuff sprinkled into to 60s and 70s sounding pop rock. The first two albums Panic made are really the only ones I truly enjoy start to finish, and a lot of tracks just put me in a really good mood during summer time. #1: 311's Transistor #2: No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom #3: Journey's Escape #4: Santana's Caravanserai #5: The Beatles' Revolver #6: RX Bandits' ...And the Battle Begun #7: Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night #8: Green Day's Dookie #9: Panic! at the Disco's Pretty. My pick for today is Smokey Robinson And The Miracles - Going To A Go-Go. A glorious early Motown album. This feels like a gorgeous romantic dance gem appropiate for summer evenings in which heartache is included. It starts with one of the most moving songs ever written about love sickness, the wonderful ´The Tracks Of My Tears´. The combination of sweetness and pain in Smokey´s falsetto is so heartbreakingly beautiful. Immedately followed by the title track, a cool exalting dance groove and a fun song to deejay. Also love The Stones version from the 1982 Still Life album. Other memorable tracks are the Doo-Wop tinged ballad ´Ooo Baby Baby´ ´My Girl is Gone´ ´In Case You Need Love´ and ´Choosey Beggar´.

Foreigner's debut is quite solid. However, last night's edition of the Hudson Valley Squares inspired my pick for today.... My Day 9 Pick: The Crow: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Yup, this movie is literally set in the end of October - well into the fall - but it came out in April of 1994, and I bought this CD in July of that year. It also happens to be my favorite movie soundtrack of all-time. The Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division ("Dead Souls"), Rage Against the Machine, Violent Femmes, Rollins Band covering Suicide ("Ghost Rider"), Helmet, Pantera covering Poison Idea ("The Badge"), My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, The Jesus and Mary Chain, et el. Other bands I wasn't too familiar with until this soundtrack, but both of their songs on here are awesome: Machines of Loving Grace ("Golgotha Tenement Blues") and For Love Not Lisa ("Slip Slide Melting"). And it ends with the beautiful "It Can't Rain All the Time" from Jane Siberry, which totally should've gotten an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song!

It would have made my Comeback list when we did that, but Octave was the Moodies representative for that month. STRANGE TIMES gives me a seaside vibe. Funnily enough I'm awaiting delivery of Strange Times CD which after seeing some favourable comments on the album decided to give it a try. I've had the 'core seven' albums since the 70's and have had so much enjoyment from them over all those years, l have a few of their later records including Octave which is pretty good, Long Distance Voyager, ditto, Keys To the Kingdom which is OK. @@robertlamkin6464 Hi, I've had delivery of Strange Times album and have given it a listen. There are a few good tracks but nothing to get too excited about, l get the feeling with some of their later songs, not only on this album but on other later records that they are singing songs not really suited to them. A bit lightweight compared to their early music l suppose. I do like The Swallow, Nothing Changes is a little like their early work with the spoken lyrics. English Sunset is a good uptempo tune to start the album, Sooner Or Later another good tune, but again not fantastic. Title track isn't bad but gets a little bit repetitious. So overall it's the first few tracks and the last songs on the album l like the most. Album lacks substance for me, especially after enjoying those wonderful early albums that truly were phenomenal.

I suppose this album like other later records lacks the substance of those phenomenal early albums, it's almost like their singing songs not suitable to the band.

Bad Company. The 1974 self-titled debut album by the British supergroup that featured Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke from Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott The Hoople, and Raymond "Boz" Burrell from King Crimson. It was the first album released on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records, and it hit #1 on the album charts. It was recorded at Headley Grange using the mobile studio of Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. It was self-produced by the band and engineered by Ron Nevison, who was an American. The music is a soulful variation on British Blues-Rock. It opens with the hard rocker Can't Get Enough. Guitarist Mick Ralphs wrote that while in Mott The Hoople. He left Mott because he didn't think that he or Ian Hunter had the right voice for the song. Mick found that voice in Paul, who plays second guitar on the song. Bad Company was named after a Jeff Bridges western. Rock Steady has groove. The Soul ballad Ready For Love was previously recorded by Mott The Hoople for All The Young Dudes. Mick plays keyboards on the Bad Co version. Don't Let Me Down features sax by Boz's King Crimson band mate Mel Collins, as well as backing vocals by a duo called Sue & Sunny. Paul plays piano on the song and the haunting title track. Moving On is another groover. The closing song is a ballad called Seagull, which has Paul playing acoustic guitar and tambourine.

So I am coming right up to date now, this has only been out a few days but it must be played loud on repeat all summer, it’s the heaviest album so far by this trio and shows how far they have come over the last few years and here's to many more albums in the future. I must say a big thank you to @christophercoles4401 for introducing me to these ladies. My pick for Day 9 Keep Me Fed The Warning

Sex Pistols ... Filthy Lucre Live Maybe I was in a mood yesterday? I put on a favorite folk album yesterday to prepare it to be my choice today. Bur a certain song that I like, mind you like, struck me as a bit of a downer. I considered another favorite album, but it seemed stale to me yesterday. The post reunion live Pistols are always fresh to me. The real four original members (never mind Sid) bring their post Pistols confidence and accomplishments to the reunion. Along with the modern mix, they come to show why they are legends for just one album. Their audience comes to celebrate that one record and a handful of non-album cuts. The neighbors may not appreciate the Pistols. But maybe I needed new neighbors anyway.

Foreigner is a respected pick, Pete. I used to own that on 8-track back in high school more than four decades ago. I liked it then. I don't miss it. Maybe I'm still in that mood from yesterday.

Wonderful pick and write up Richard. One of my all time favorite live albums. I love Lydon's...oops, I mean Rotten's statement to the audience after a few songs: "We're not so f*#king bad after all, are we?" Just to let you know -- that mood you were in yesterday? I think I'm in it today.

Finding it difficult to think of albums that are more enjoyable in the summer than in any other season. One though that springs to mind is Lexicon of Love by ABC (1982) a truly amazing debut album immaculately produced by Trevor Horn with a few well known 'hits' but the deeper cuts every bit as good. Songs such as Show Me a great start to the album, Many Happy Returns, Valentines Day and my favourite of all, Date Stamp. Sadly later Lexicon of Love ll (2016) didn't quite reach the dizzy heights of original.
