Great topic, I've got to check out your recommendations that I haven't seen. A couple of French films I love - The Intouchables and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I know you've already seen mainstream foreign films like Cinema Paradiso, The 400 Blows and Kurosawa's legendary titles. I just blind-bought Shoplifters (Japan 2018) based on a youtube rec but haven't watched it yet, it may have vibes of the terrific Parasite.
"IDA" is very beautifully film. Every frame looks and reads like a Portrait. The Jazz music soundtrack witg John Coltrane Sax just adds another Dimension to the 📷picture. I also recommend "Possession" 80s film. I got it from 4k from Umbrella. It is a very dark drama horror...one scene in train station is **disturbing** 😳 jaw dropped.
yea Ida is gorgeous! I know of Possession but have never seen it. Ive seen that train station scene online & yea... will definitely be checking it out.
Here are a few more for you to watch... City of Lost Children Hard Boiled The Killer St. Trinians (the remake) Wing Chun The Miracle Fighters I will think of more sometime after i post this.
I recommend the Horde. Its a french zombie movie. The police raid an apartment building right before zombies take over. There is an IFC dvd in North America and a blu ray in the UK (which i need to get).
Bit late to the party but thought I'd chip in with some classics I have: A Bittersweet Life Chaser Angst Martyrs A Tale of Two Sisters Run Lola Run Downfall Flashpoint Kill Zone (SPL) Irreversible The Sadness
Good subject.. The B13 movie was great and you should check out Brick Mansions the same main actor from B13 is in it also.. Really it’s the same story both B13 movies just the American version. Raid 1 & 2 are great always want a third movie especially the way 2 left off.. Other movies you should look for are Red Sun with Charles Bronson great Asian western.. Illang The Wolf Brigade great Korean movie reminds of the game Killzone.. The original Shogun mini series definitely better then the Hulu remake definitely a forgotten masterpiece.. And last but not least Curse of the Golden Flower just a great masterpiece of visual..
I saw Brick Mansions when it came out hated it haha the OG was definitely better. I will definitely check out Curse of the Golden Flower, never heard of it. Thanks for the recommends!
Great list! I enjoyed Martyrs more than high tension. I was enjoying high tension until i saw the twist coming and I hated that I was right when it was revealed. Killed the movie for me.
oh really? lol I loved the twist, or at least thought it was cleaver at the time when it came out. When did you see it 1st? I can imagine that test being done so many times by other films after if you saw it late. I haven't seen Martyrs yet but have it on my list, I always forget to check it out haha
Here's some of the foreign films I go back to and watch from time to time : Delicatessen (1991) French film (Solaris (1972) Russian Stalker (1979) Russian) Same director Stroszek (1977) German Seven Samurai (1954) Japanese Cross of Iron (1977) UK/German
@@thelastmoviestanding yes, and, in my opinion, Soderbergh's remake is nothing by comparison, but Andrei Tarkovsky does happen to be one of my favourite filmmakers ever. His films have an "other worldly" quality to them, in the best way possible. 'Mirror's easily my favourite film of Tarkovsky's. I highly recommend the 'Pusher' trilogy from Nicolas Winding Refn. That's my favourite film trilogy, ever. There's a very nice boxset from Umbrella. The 'Three Colours' trilogy from Krzysztof Kieślowski are beautiful films and I think essential cinema for any film lover. (but avoid the recent 4k set, and go for the blu-rays, as the 4k's have butchered the colour palettes.) The Anime 'Ghost In The Shell' is my no. one favourite film, and of course that's Japanese. I refuse to go anywhere near the whitewashed hollywood re-make, in fact, when the re-make came out, seeing the poster everywhere and just the reminder that there is an unneeded re-make would make me angry. No joke, I went to see a hypnotist called Morpheus to blank the memory of the fact that the re-make even exists, completely from my mind, and, for some time it was impossible for me to feel anger. But that didn't last. I've always preferred Foreign films to English speaking ones, so, that by default makes Criterion my favourite company and for the most part, really the only one I'm loyal to. Being a film lover yourself, you might like the Italian film 'Cinema Paradiso', which is a very heartfelt and passionate film. Director's Cut is the only way to go
Foreign films are great, some of my favourites are Oldboy, Memories of Murder, Das Leben der Anderen form Germany, El secreto de sus ojos is a beautiful and powerful Argentinian movie, Contratiempo is a very good Sanish movie. I use foreign movies as a pallet cleanser a lot, and i need them after a series of mainstream studio crap.
There's a few more ive saving for a part 2, The Handmaiden is definitely 1 but I don't own it physically yet. I might wait til Zone Of Interest comes out on 4k to do it.
I took your recommendation and ordered Year of the Jellyfish from Amazon (had never heard of it before).... I'd recommend such foreign films as: Amelie (2001), City of Lost Children (1995) and Delicatessen (1991) - all from director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, La Femme Nikita (1990), Run Lola Run (1998), Insomnia (1997), Europa Europa (1990), Cinema Paradiso (1988), Das Boot (1982)... all are really amazing and worth seeing on blu ray!!
I love I Saw the Devil. Anytime someone talks about Oldboy I mention I Saw the Devil to them. Definitely more horror adjacent stuff in I Saw the Devil but the revenge plot and action is very similar and most people come away loving it.
Great list I only have Year of the Jellyfish! Brotherhood of the wolf has been on my radar for a long time most of my foreign titles are Kung fu with a few dramas and a couple Giallo. I recommend the French version of The Fifth Element lol
Omg one I forgot and this was fairly recent(2020) but I feel went under everyone’s radar was Meander. It’s a French science fiction horror film. It is intense, especially if you’re claustrophobic. In a nutshell a girl takes a ride from a random stranger, she’s drugged and when she awakes she’s inside a series of tunnels with enough space she can only crawl thru. Each tunnel section has a series of brutal traps she has to get thru. It’s often compared to cube because of that but it’s also much different. Great flik, umbrella oddly only released it on dvd which I own it has an English dub or subs. It got a German blu ray but it has no English option. I’ve been tempted to pick it up tho as there isn’t much dialogue
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! is it okay? did you get the same edition I made a video about? I hope y'all are okay & didn't get too hurt by Beryl. Im from Beaumont so I got lots of family down in the area
@@thelastmoviestanding we didn't get hit as badly as they thought we would. Very little wind, just downpours of rain. Yes, I got that one you did the video on. It is used but in pretty good condition. I found it on ebay under "American pie die Klassen". It didn't come up under "American pie" . It's the most that I have paid for a dvd!
@@DonStrand-d3x nice!! Yea I got mine from Amazon Germany, was the only new 1 I could find. I need to make a video on how to find these easier. I always have to type in the German or other language name to find them.
I’ll definitely check out some of these. Great to find out about some I hadn’t heard about. Dive deeper into the greats like Kurosawa and Tarkovsky if you haven’t yet. I look forward to your takes as you post ‘em.
@@thelastmoviestanding Stalker, Mirror and Solaris are my favs. But everything I’ve seen from him have been insanely good. They’ll test your patience though.
@@thelastmoviestanding I've never cared for the Kurbrick version but the 1997 version is great! It's beautifully shot. The casting was on point and they story was captivating. It's definitely a movie worth buying.
Nice list of films. My favorite is Downfall a German film about the last days of Hitler and the fall of Berlin. It's based on a book written by Hitler's secretary. Riveting film.
@@thelastmoviestanding no problem. It's available on eBay on DVD. It's in German with English subtitles. Bruno Grantz who plays Hitler in the film gives an amazing performance. I highly recommend it.
Could talk foreign movies all day! So many great movies out there. Hopefully there are a few listed here you haven't seen: (Russian) Beyond the Reach 2018, Sputnik, Superdeep, (Turkish) Baskin, (Norwegian) Dead Snow, Troll Hunter, (Finnish) Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, (French) Frontier(s), Martyrs, (Korean) Howling, Pipeline, Decibel, The Pirates, Confession of Murder, Project Wolf Hunting (Japanese) Battle Royale, Oldboy, (Venezuelan) The Lake Vampire.
I’ve seen Sputnik before. Dead Snow is ok list, I loved Hansel & Gretel. Rare Exports is high on my list. I have Big Game & became a huge fan of that director. Frontiers I havnt seen they but the Second Sight box looks very very interesting. Battle Royale too I need to see
@@thelastmoviestanding There are tons of great stuff. Everybody knows of Lee and Chan, but check out the girls with guns stuff, Cynthia Rothrock, Cynthia luster, Cynthia Khan, Moon Lee and of course Michelle Yeoh
I always forget Run Lola Run is a foreign film hahah I havnt seen it in years! I am excited for the 4K coming out. Internal Affairs ive always heard great thing about & have never seen it
@@JOHNDOEJUGGALO I know Abraham Lincoln vampire Hunter does have its fans. I really wanted to like it because of how much I liked wanted, but it just didn’t do it for me.
@@thelastmoviestanding maybe watching it in 3D blinded me with effects. I recall having a fun time with it, but that was many years ago. Maybe a rewatch is in order.
Train to Busan and Brotherhood of the Wolf are targets of mine...Ive been hearing about the Raid from my buddy Edward for a long time but still havent seen it!
@@thelastmoviestanding Do you have any idea if the new edition of 'The Raid' from "Umbrella' has the new restoration on the included blu-ray disc, or is it just on the 4k disc? I ask because, (with the help of youtuber 'Basementblus') I imported the US steelbook, only to find out that the blu-ray in that set is just a re-hash of the previous blu-ray I already own, and shipping was very expensive. If this new one from 'Umbrella' has the film restored on the blu-ray, I'd double-dip. Actually, ideally I hope there's a blu-ray only option of the restored in 4k version.
Awesome list!! My faves are Takashi Miike, Bong Joon Ho, Mikael Haneke, Shinya Tsukamoto, Pedro Almodovar, The Raid films, Train to Busan, Cure, The Man From Nowhere and I Saw the Devil 😀
🤣 Night Watch it confusing for sure, I didn't even know how to talk about it hahaha I just remember seeing it when it 1st came out & remember loving the effects. Day Watch it way better but sadly you have to understand Nightwatch to know what is coming on haha
Some great ones here, not sure of these are mentioned, about to leave for work so can’t finish the vid. But I highly recommend Martyrs and Livid, great French modern horrors
Definitely, the French are on another level when it comes to horror. Livid is essentially a haunted house film but it’s intense and so atmospherically well done. Another one is Inside
