My pick for greatest riff of all time is Stranglehold by Ted Nugent... liked y’all’s picks all around... especially love your number 5 and 6 Pete Also Butch I ranked your number 1 at the top of my top 20 VH songs vid... also did a Top 10 Live Albums of the 1970s about a year ago and included that Pat Travers album pretty high, killer stuff!
1984 I'm German visiting my Family in Idaho, for the first time, so I had to go from Spokane to Lewiston with a rental car and I was listening to Idaho Classic Rock and they played Stranglehold and I felt home. You have to understand they don't play this kid of Music not in the German Radio
very fun! So many amazing riffs. Here are my picks.... Van Halen - Romeo Delight - Crushingly heavy and in my opinion the best sound he ever put down on tape. Loudness - The Lines Are Down - Akira Takasaki is stunning on this entire album but really on fire with this track. Krokus - Night Wolf - For pure power and heaviness this is a must hear. Might be my favorite Krokus track. Queen - Tie Your Mother Down - Brian May has a phone book sized portfolio of killer riffs but is any cooler and heavier than the entire intro and opening riff to this classic? Ted Nugent - Out Of Control - Frantic! Amazing! Brutal! You can hear the cones moving in his Fender cabinets. That is some heavy stuff right there! Michael Schenker - Red Sky! Love your picks of "Assault Attack" and "Rock Bottom". But I have always loved this riff and it is vintage Schenker. Megadeth - Holy Wars ..the Punishment Due. Good grief! That riff alone defines the entire genre of Thrash. The playing is fierce and relentless. Instant head banging. Alice In Chains - We Die Young. While there are other riffs of Jerry Cantrell's I might like better, this was the first sound I heard of them on their first album. Set the tone right off the bat and I was never disappointed after that. Black Sabbath - Zero the Hero. Again..an endless number of options but to me, this is might be the single heaviest and most impactful riff I have ever heard. Earth shaking heavy. Blue Oyster Cult - Transmaniacon MC. Again...first riff from the band and it screams..HERE WE ARE! Buck's sound is already spectacular and that riff is vintage BOC! (I will stick with 10 so Butch doesn't yell at me again! LOL Just kidding!!)
You like the heavier side of Led Zeppelin? Black Sabbath? Mark II Deep Purple? Uriah Heep? Then Budgie is your friend. Such heavy riffs and fantastic rhythm section!
@@claxton1959 Uriah Heep is still rising! I would love to see current Uriah Heep. Sad that all the classic band except Mick Box is gone but the new team seem to have good energy. I look forward to upcoming release!
Damn, this one was difficult... Black Sabbath - Sabbra Cadabra Deep Purple - Burn Diamond Head - It's Electric Dio - Straight Through the Heart Megadeth - The Skull Beneath the Skin Metallica - Blackened Pantera - 13 Steps to Nowhere Slayer - The Antichrist Thin Lizzy - Cold Sweat Van Halen - I'm the One/Light Up the Sky (both are equally amazing, impossible to choose between) gotta have one bass riff... Tool - 46 & 2

A co-worker was wearning black and white checkered shoes this morning. I asked him if he had ever heard of Fastway. He hadn't- "Say What You Will" was what I introduced him to them with. Great riff.

Living Colour - Cult of Personality. Shocked this wasn't mentioned in the comments. An ear-splitting, serpentine riff that just happens to be cool, catchy, addictive and memorable. I also think there are no open strings used, so it certainly isn't the easiest to nail.
I'm late...but I agree. "Cult Of Personality" was the 1st one that came to mind. I didn't use open strings when I played it (on bass). Totally serpentine :-) & the 3/4 bars keep it dicey. "Black Dog" is the other serpentine riff that came initially to mind. :-)
@@jazzpunk Cool that you could play it. I think - to an extent, anyway - that it would be harder to play on bass than on the guitar. In any event, it's a mondo-cool riff!!!
Rush - Bastille Day Ratt - Lay It Down Metallica - Wherever I May Roam Iron Maiden - Mother Russia Judas Priest - Bloodstone Megadeth - Trust Misfits - Dig Up Her Bones Rainbow - Man On The Silver Mountain Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell Tool - Vicarious Ozzy Osbourne - Shot In The Dark KISS - Psycho Circus Deep Purple - Knocking At Your Backdoor Motley Crue - Live Wire Queen - The Hitman And for 6 non-hard rock/heavy metal honorable mentions: Pink Floyd - Run Like Hell INXS - The One Thing Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) Yes - Love Will Find A Way Styx - Love At First Sight
This is impossible but here goes... 1. Van Halen- “Unchained” 2. Black Sabbath- “Hole in the Sky” 3. Queen- “Stone Cold Crazy” 4. Metallica- “Creeping Death” 5. Led Zeppelin- “Immigrant Song” 6. Judas Priest- “Riding on the Wind” 7. Danzig- “Snakes of Christ” 8. Tool- “Ænima” 9. AC/DC- “Overdose” 10. Alice In Chains- “We Die Young” (demo version, far superior to the album version, so heavy)
@@seagullpoet Yes, it is on the compilation “Nothing Safe: Best of the Box”. Also contains “Get Born Again”, the last song they ever recorded with Layne. Great song.

Five of my favourite Riffs (out of hundreds) Black Sabbath- Sabbath bloody sabbath Immortal- Wrath from Above Iron Maiden- Die with your boots on Blue Öyster Cult- I'm on the lamb but I ain't no sheep Manilla Road- Road of Kings

Deep Purple- Wring That Neck Black Sabbath-Wicked World Chicago Transit Authority- South California Purples Humble Pie- Stone Cold Fever Ten Years After- Love Like a Man Moxy-Can't You See I'm a Star
"Starstruck" was played partly in a medley type of thing by Rainbow as well (1 chorus/ 1 verse-not the opening riff). I have it on a bootleg from Osaka 78 (51sec). Cheers!
Top 10 riffs, that was the definition of ‘hard’ rock 🤣. After spending all Saturday afternoon on this, mine are: Highway to Hell - AC/DC Keep the Faith - Bon Jovi Coming of Age - Damn Yankees The Phoenix - Fall Out Boy Going Underground - The Jam Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World Since you’ve been gone - Rainbow Back on the Road Again - REO Speedwagon I’ve done everything for you - Sammy Hagar 20th Century Boy - T.Rex I hope you do a 2nd & 3rd edition.
The discussion about Pat Travers got me thinking of a possible theme for a show, bands you saw live that you later came to love/admire but at the time, because you'd never heard of them, you didn't pay them any attention. I saw Pat Travers at Reading in 1980 but I have very little memory of it as I'd not heard about him at the time. I know they played Snortin Whisky but it made no impact! Reminds me of my brother in law who was at the Isle of Wight in 1970 but has no memory of seeing Miles (my all time hero) as he'd not heard of him at the time!!
1977 - Four acres in Marcy, NY: Pat Travers, Mars Cowling and Tommy Aldridge playing the Life in London LP. I sat in the front row and drank with them until 3:00AM. What a show! 96cents. WTF, what happened? It will never happen again!
I saw Pat Travers open for Cheap Trick at the Stanley Theatre in Utica, NY in 1978. Sitting in the balcony- thought it was going to collapse from Tommy’s double kicks.
Thin Lizzy - Cold Sweat Gary Moore - Murder in the Skies Alice in Chains - Dirt Def Leppard - Let it Go Triumph - Too Much Thinking System of a Down - B.Y.O.B. Iron Maiden - Flash of the Blade
Savage - Cry Wolf (my fave riff from the entire NWOBHM era. Such a nasty tone) ZZ Top - Just Got Paid Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (hard not to choose Supernaut but really the whole list could be Sabbath) Helmet - In the Meantime (the noise intro then when it kicks in. Simple, drop D, amazing groove as always) Judas Priest - Electric Eye Van Halen - Somebody Get Me a Doctor Lard - Forkboy UFO - Rock Bottom Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl (this is...grunge) Megadeth - Holy Wars (also that riff in Wake Up Dead. Jesus) Whitesnake - Still of the Night Some honourable mentions Ratt - Lay it Down (a finger-injurer of a riff) Metallica - Creeping Death Kyuss - Thumb (pure filth) Death - Symbolic DMBQ - Smoker (ridiculously in the red and overdriven. Japanese psychedelic/garage band) AC/DC - Riff/Raff
Cities on Flame - BOC Hot Smoke and Sassafras - Bubble Puppy Bitch - Rolling Stones Beast of Burden - Rolling Stones Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie Heart Full of Soul - Yardbirds 20th Century Boy - T Rex Lights Out - UFO
Good lists of riffs Butch and Pete. If I could drop in an image of Tony Iommi or Jimmy Page that would cover it but I am going a bit different route for my list: Joe Walsh (James Gang) - Funk #49 Eric Clapton (Derek and the Dominoes) - Layla Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush) - A New Rock and Roll Brian May (Queen) - Sheer Heart Attack Gary Richrath (REO Speedwagon) - Golden Country John Petrucci (Liquid Tension Experiment) - Acid Rain Barry Goudreau/Tom Scholz (Boston) - Rock and Roll Band Francis Rossi (Status Quo) - Pictures of Matchstick Men Emppu Vuorinen (Nightwish) - Dark Chest of Wonders Nash the Slash (FM) - Phasors on Stun. Bring on part 2!
Great show, as usual. Tough choice. I would say: Metallica - Master of puppets (and Seek and destroy) Led Zeppelin - Black dog (or Good times bad times) Deep Purple - Pictures of home Savage - Cry wolf (Pete, thank you for this one) ZZ Top - La Grange Fleetwood Mac - Rattlesnake shake (ok it's in the middle of the song, but it is a great riff) Cure - Boys don't cry Rolling Stones - The last time Beatles - Day tripper Temptations - My girl The Clash - Magnificent seven Hendrix - Purple Haze
The riffs that absolutely get me going 1) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones 2) Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream 3) Bring It On Home - Led Zeppelin 4) Supernaut - Black Sabbath 5) Back In Black - AC/DC 6) Mississippi Queen - Mountain 7) New Rose - The Damned 8) London Calling - The Clash 9) London - The Smiths 10) I Can't Explain (Live At Leeds) - The Who

I did one per band. I hate myself for trying to do this... hahahaha
In no particular order (with some very nonoriginal choices): Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man Metallica - Seek And Destroy Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vida Black Sabbath - Into The Void Slayer - Raining Blood Dio - Stand Up And Shout Candlemass - Embracing The Styx (very slayerish in some way) S.O.D. - March Of The SOD Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At The Moon
Someone in the comments mentioned KISS Parasite; Strange Ways from that same album also has a killer opening riff. From the Starz debut album: Over and Over, Now I Can, and Pull the Plug. Jake E. Lee’s opening riffs on Bark at the Moon, Journey to the Center of Eternity, and Hard Driver. Ronnie Montrose “Cat On A Leash” from Gamma 2 Ted Nugent’s opening riff on “Tied Up In Love” from the Penetrator album. Every great band has at least a few songs with great riff intros. Eagles’ Life In The Fast Lane, Journey’s Stone In Love, Styx’ Blue Collar Man, REO’s Ridin’ The Storm Out. The list just goes on and on….
So many riff masters and great riffs out there, a second show is a must! Cactus - One Way... Or Anther Captain Beyond - Raging River Of Fear James Gang - Funk #49 Megadeth - Skin O' My Teeth Montrose - Space Station #5 Queen - Stone Cold Crazy

44:40 ...Blackmore's "The Battle Rages On" riff, is totally underrated. I'm guessing it's not in the nostalgia zone of the 70's. Great topic, by the way.
High Wire - Badlands (Jake) Bite The Bullet - Motorhead (Eddie) Bastille Day - Rush (Alex) American Girls - Triumph (Rick) Life In The Fast Lane - The Eagles (Joe) Stone Cold Crazy - Queen (Brian) Ain't Superstitious - Jeff Beck Group Juggernaught - Frank Marino Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers - ZZ Top (Billy) Edison's Medicine - Tesla (Frank & Tommy)

Sooo many more;this list could have 100!!!
Great show you two. Lol Someone has to make a compilation of Pete getting interrupted by robo calls/ spam calls and his reactions. For some reason it always makes me laugh.
I could make a list of 20 straight off the bat from only Tony Iommi's riffs. The opening riff from Wheels of Confusion blew me away in '71 and is the gold standard imo.
The "most" riff of all must be the one which is everywhere. What I mean by most is that the same riff is on the following songs, in one way or another: Tush - ZZ Top Beat It (in the middle of the song) - Michael Jackson Nothing I Won't Do - Foghat No Class - Motorhead Red Sky - Status Quo A Light In The Black - Rainbow I really like this riff though and I don't mind it showing up everywhere
1. Afraid to Shoot Strangers - Iron Maiden 2. Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love - Van Halen 3. Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers - ZZ Top 4. Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin 5. I Don't Know - Ozzy Osbourne 6. Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones 7. Orgasmatron - Motorhead 8. Saturday Night Special - Lynyrd Skynyrd 9. Seek and Destroy - Metallica 10. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience I went more with opening riffs, and tried to avoid the too-obvious choices.
ZZ Top - Bar-B-Q AC-DC - Walk All Over You Blue Öyster Cult - Godzilla Virgin Steele - Mind, Body, Spirit Accept - Balls to the Wall Spliff - Rock is a Drug Van Halen - Unchained Iron Maiden - 22 Arcadia Avenue Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

First couple that come to mind are: Symptom of the Universe - Sabbath Rat Bat Blue - Purple Whole Lotta Love - Zeppelin (Yeah,I know it's overplayed now) Schools Out - the Coop Aqualung - Jethro Tull Virgin Killer - Scorpions Holocaust - Savatage Saints in Hell and In for the Kill were both great picks Pete.1 for Butch = Unchained About 10 Sabbath songs Supernaut, Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,NIB,Hole in the Sky,etc....
Butch !!! I fortunately found the Pat Travers Go For What You Know a few months ago in a local vinyl shop... took a risk by buying it without knowing about it but the cover looked pretty cool ! Anyway now I’m happy I did buy that vinyl ! It’s great ! Also my favourite riff from Thunder And Lightning is Cold Sweat ! Also has a great duckin’ solo ! And also ! Did this concept with a friend a week before this video came out and I also picked Burn as my number 1 ! Ps : I want a part 2 !
I can only pick ten OF my favorites, the list could be totally different tomorrow :Edit: I swear I typed Light Up The Sky 10 minutes before I heard Butch say it! Fuck! lol Great pick Butch! \m/ AC/DC - Hells Bells Metallica - Seek & Destroy Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At The Moon UFO - Mother Mary Slayer - Postmortem Black Sabbath - Symptom Of The Universe Aerosmith - Chiquita Van Halen - Light Up The Sky KISS - Strange Ways Megadeth - Take No Prisoners A few homorable mentions: Pantera - A New Level Triumph - Street Fightin' Man Accept - Balls To The Wall
