Sometimes, if you pay close attention, his real accent leaks through. That's the only problem with faking an accent. Your real accent leaks through sometimes.
@@jonnyb.animationstutorials7119 maybe. But isn't speaking with an American (excluding the extremes) accent far easier than most British accents? Just think about all the american actors that tried speaking British accents and how horrible it sounds. Also most non-native-speakers adopt something that sounds like American English rather quickly.
@@hugopepe1722 This. Being English, and Northern English at that, I'm privy to the WORST "British" accents. I can tell when an American is trying their absolute hardest to imitate an accent and they don't just quite get it.
Nobody asked, but my favorite "House" quote is from a first season episode, where House is saying how he's different from Foreman's old mentor, who thinks it's good enough to follow established procedures, and if patients die, oh well. House's approach, of course, is to do whatever will save the patient's life. House finishes up with: "He sleeps better at night. He shouldn't."
"that's the difference between him and me, he thinks you do your job and what will be will be, I think that what i do and what you do matters. he sleeps better at night, he shouldn't" S01E09 (DNR)
+MrSkeezymak 8 seasons was enough, it's ratings dropped considerably in the last 2 or 3 seasons anyway so it had to go...Get the all DVDs and your problem solved.
@@bluescluessuperagent That's because you're better at spotting the mistakes in English accents. Most American accents aren't done super well considering the specific accent that's being attempted, we just have s many variations of each accent that getting things wrong doesn't make the accent less convincing. Essentially, Americans talk in illogical ways that don't make sense when you take the accent they're supposed to have into question, so someone faking the accent had more wiggle room. Just go watch accent experts look at actor's fake accents and you'll see how much slips through.
Ian-Z- Yu might know he is actually a British actor that’s why he has a British accent he makes the American accent because the movie is made in New Jersey America
+MyGuitargirl101 Before he was in House MD, Laurie was famous in the UK for two series; A Bit of Fry and Laurie (sketch comedy) and the legendary series known as Blackadder. I recommend seeing both, especially Blackadder.
no youre not. i hate watching him on House. what the americans couldnt get an american to do it. ? I am sure laurie was well paid but laurie is so much more than a fake accent which is what so many people keep harping about. I remember him in Blackadder ;;;;jeeves and wooster and much more...he was a darling. a musician , he hs written books, plays musical instruemnts, acts, does comedy, a brilliant mind and an all rounder..And all people can associate him is HOUSE...I
I'm a Norwegian who lived two years in the states when I was young, and I completely agree with Hugh when it comes to religion. Especially in Northern Europe, we're not very religious. Religion, guns and universal health care are three areas where Europe and the US have different views.
I wouldn't say different views but different contexts, here in South America economics dictate much of those three aspects, how they are implemented, in which way to apply them, without negating they work different in another realities.
@@NeilLewis77 I think, and I know it is wrong to generalize as South America has countries with more European societies as the Chilean or Uruguayan, is because the choice of religion competes with identity and prosperity. U.S. religions in my immediate reality (a city where trade is important) are popular and people changes from one sect to another according to how wealthy they get. In Peru thanks to our ancestral religions also there are some rules that govern etiquette that permeates to economics, even if a person is not a believer. I'd say the fact that religions compete, the local ones, the others that came from Europe and Africa, the new ones from the U.S., Korea and even Brazil, somehow has taken a kind of market, each religion turns into a kind of magic to get more wealth, most of our presidents (it doesn't matter of they are native red, or Asian or from Northern European ancestry) don't attempt new enterprises to get and preserve power without asking first to tarot or coca leaf readers, the same for the poorest that at least will pay to the Earth (challar) so a business will have good results. Greetings and sorry for the extension of the message, I am from the Andean plateau.
@@ReinoldFZ very interesting my friend. Seems bizarre to me to think of religions competing for members. Where I'm from about 90 percent of people have no religion. It's never brought up. No one goes to any church. No one has any interest in it. And that applies to rich and poor people. Old and young. Northern or southern. To say we grew out of it would be the wrong phrase. But on the whole, everyone in the UK has abandoned all religions and it's working out great. Hopefully one day all nations will abandon religion and that will be the end of most wars.
@@NeilLewis77 I think religion is just a safety frame to go along the life without worrying much about questions. Most of my European acquaintances indeed have no interest in any religion, at best they treat it as a cultural patrimony. But I think war is rather a human trait than a consequence of religion (although monotheistic ones are sometimes quite fiery) there will be other reasons or ideologies (a safety frame to give sense to troublesome questions) to wage war. Oh, and by the way religions compete for members but members too chase the best one or more convenient, as in our beliefs there is not much of an afterlife a religion should be good if you do well.
It didn't occur to me until now but this actually makes me sad because what happens to House after 5 months. He'll be lonely =( How does Sherlock survive without his Watson?
An W He'd find another wilson bla bla bla, house could have continued for another 8 seasons if they really wanted. Even if House technically died, writers could have easily got around that in half dozen ways.
AnWu Agree. They should make a movie wherein Wilson's dead and House's alone, desperate and in pain. And then he gets to reunite with Thirteen to fulfill his promise to off her.
I am SHOOK to hear him with a British accent. I honestly thought he was speaking normally the entire show and now hearing him speaking off camera without the American accent is crazy.
Was the opposite for me, i found it difficult to get used to him with an american accent in house, having grown up watching him in Blackadder, jeeves and wooster, and a bit of fry and laurie. Great actor 😊👍🏻
Yeah it was soo odd hearing him with the American accent but I got used to it. But because he always had the British accent before I can now accept both ways as normal.
@@taheredejahang4130 In English it's an idiomatic expression to say "It's not brain surgery" to mean, "It's not so difficult or complicated that the average person couldn't master it." The joke is that they are actually *doing* brain surgery, but they say "It's not television." That is a joke because it implies that television is actually much harder than surgery due to how nerve-wracking it is. I hope that helps!
"Life is pain! I wake up every morning, I'm in pain! I go to work in pain! Do you know how many times I wanted to just give up?! How many times I thought about ending it?!" It's a line I will remember till the day I die, because it describes myself so perfectly.
Because I've been living with chronic pain for over 6 years while the previous 20 I atleast got small breaks from them. " I live in pain. Pain that on good days is merely intolerable and on bad ones will suck the life-force right out of you." The pain meds I'm on barley puts a dent on the good days so u can imagine what a bad day is like. I've been rushed to hospital several times because the pain wasn't manageable several times. And my options are limited because I have problems finding doctors who are interested in giving me the mid-high ranged meds because I'm so young. Weed could help, but getting anything other then THC in my area is almost impossible, and while it would help I'm not interested in doing heroin just yet.
Pierzing.glint1sh7 So like so many other chronic pain patients we often get treated like junkies because we are desperate, longing for even a few moments of pain relief.
nope, I guess they could technically destroy the pain center of my brain, but no doctor would ever do that. Hell CIPA is being classified as a disease when it really should be looked at as a cure. I can't see how breaking ur arm, just as an example, and not feel it would be a bad thing. But hey I'm biased so.
I know, I thought the exact same thing! What a nice guy, unlike lots of actors/actresses who think the world begins and ends with them and that they have every right to criticize the US while making millions in Hollywood. Love House even more (which is saying alot)!! 😎
@@lisadc4681 it’s a British thing. They are super polite. To the point of inauthentic. They will never tell you what they’re really thinking about you because that is deemed impolite.
My favorite qoute from House, and it's great because it plays into the longest running jokes on the show, is when he is talking to Foreman while getting his secret stash of Vicodin. " You stash your drugs in a Lupus textbook? " " It's never Lupus! " ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vpkzhvZ_CFM.html The scene in question
My ex and I watching House and Hugh begins talking and pretending to have a British accent. I immediately burst out laughing because he's playing an American pretending to have a shotty British accent completely different than his own natural one lol. My ex was today years old when he found out Hugh was British 🤣😂🤣 Hugh's so brilliant! 😍
Best show I can think of: chemistry of funny smart and riveting. I own and watch all 8 seasons ( or 9 I forget) repeatedly and take a break every so often. Characters are all likeable even with their flaws which makes them more interesting. Bill Cheers
He played a villian in a series with tom hiddleston called 'the night manager' it was is a brittish series and he was excellent as a villian. Must watch if you havent.
It's so weird hearing him with a British accent honestly I didn't even know lol this just blows my mind and it's awesome 😃 Hugh Laurie (House) FTW btw House is definitely my favorite show of all time lol
It was the longest time before I even knew that Hugh was even a Brit. His American accent is better than mine, and I was born, have lived, and will die here! 😄
Religion and guns would be the biggest difference between the US and Britain. Even the police in Britain do not carry guns. Also the portion sizes of food, no country sells food in the portion sizes they serve in the US.
***** I think America would be a dangerous country to live in without the guns, although marginally less. The real danger is in this American (sub-?) -culture that favours nationalistic, male power-fantasy thinking. Honestly, if these guns'r'all people would stop behaving like they grew up solely on '80's action movies, it would be so much less of a problem. You would never hear a Swiss person talk like that. They are, by and large, peace-loving, sensible and meek
sarcastic bowl of cornflakes Ah, see: I knew that about Switzerland and assumed it would be the same in the US. So the restrictions so many Americans are against are maybe just "restrictions" as in, people will still be able to buy weapons, but the gun licence will require the owner to be sane and trained?
Herfinnur Árnafjall put the stereotypic thinking on the shelf. The majority of gun violence is related to inner city crime, specifically drug-territory crime. Most gun owners are sensible people, not least due to having a weapon teaches responsibility. Oh, and women own guns too. Guess they must have bought into the male power fantasy too.
sarcastic bowl of cornflakes "Owning a gun no more teaches responsibility than owning a car does" There a nugget of truth in that claim and a large bucket full of ignoring human motivation. Dangerous tool + idiotic operator = dead operator or an operator that is very quickly thrown in the stockade for manslaughter. People are stupid, but most tend to learn from the mistake of others if the results of the others stupidity is severe enough. "People are irresponsible with both all the damned time." Some are, yes. How many motor vehicles are owned in the US? 75 million? 100 million? How many are operated daily of these many millions? How many are used in a way that is either grossly negligent or outright criminal, resulting in grievous bodily harm? 1ppm? 10ppm? ".Except at least in the case of cars they serve purposes other than simply being dangerous." This shows that you have a deeply simplistic understandiing of what a firearm is. You are wholly ignoring that a gun, despite being a wespon, is also a *tool* used by people for self-defense. Using the same flawed understanding on cars would have you claim that cars are solely tool used for vehicular manslaughter because you choose to only look ath its negative uses and consequences.
"The person considering attacking will always have the element of surprise. So they can always get their gun out" The far majority or crimes and would-be crimes that a handgun helps protect against are home burglaries and rapes, both of in the absoklute majority of cases are perpetrated without a handgun. "If I'm a criminal, and I want to commit a violent crime, I'll want to defend myself from potential victims, so there is a 100% chance that I'll make sure I'm better armed than any of the people I'm planning on choosing as victims." That argument has been tried *many* times, and it looks nice on paper, but betrays that you simply are not familiar with the crime occurrences and the collected statistics in the field. You can easily look up the stats en masse on the subject of hand gun defense and how crimes are pepetrated. Your entire stance betrays that you have never done so in your life and are solely relying to ideas that others have foisted on you. I could say something about being idiotic in the same league as you did to me, but I'll make you mood less unpleasant and tell you that ignorance is generally not a permanent affliction, and that you have plenty of room to grow and enlighten yourself.
Anyone who thought Hugh Laurie was American has been missing out. A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster and others can all be found on RU-vid and worth your time.
Gee, after hearing about how Blair had to HIDE the fact that he WAS religious, I'm quite envious of Europe. Of course, over here, you have to be religious in order to be elected.
Muhammed Yousif How am I being racist when you CHOOSE to be religious? Racism is hating on something which someone can't help, like skin color or ethnicity. Two passages for you below.... Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help." Quran (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them" This is what your holy book teaches. How is this not violent or intolerant? Have you even READ your shitty holy-book? Maybe you should read something, because you obviously haven't read the book which you blindly put all your faith in.
JOSH FORD There are extremists in every religion. There are extremists WITHOUT religion. Across international lines, guess what? There are extremists. Essentially, everywhere you look there will be extremists. To classify the entire Muslim population as "extremist" is an incorrect generalization. It's weird, I would think a man who spells his name in all caps would be better informed. Sam Garret, you are equally as stupid as the person you're agreeing with. How you found a way to pepper religion into a video about Hugh Laurie is beyond me.
Best House Quote: House says sarcastically while Cuddy is in the Room to where she would have to testify if something went wrong "I GRAB THE NEAREST RANDOM SYRINGE *DRUNK* AND--"
It's his range that amazes me. The concept that the same gent could play Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster AND all the characters in A Bit of Fry and Laurie AND House. Whoa. Huge respect here!
Still sad AF about Larry saying to Anthony Hopkins, 2 weeks before Larry died of Covid, that Larry said he was just too curious to succumb. Oh F me. Oh Larry. Sweet guy. F.
***** What values are those? Because most of the values religion thinks it stands for exist in other forms. In my experience the reason it is "torn apart" as you say is because it considers itself entitled to dictate morality without basis.
***** Except is obviously isn't. Take the bible as an example, arguably its main code of morality is the 10 commandments. Now while several of these are good moral codes e.g. no murder and no theft these laws existed in many societal codes before the book was written, an example being the 12 tables in the Roman Empire. There's no prohibition on slavery, rape or genocide in these commandments possibly because of the amount of it that happens later in the book. Either that or they just don't think they are worth prohibiting.
Cynical Lawman I don't understand how that makes it not an absolute basis. When you say that there is "no prohibition on slavery, rape or genocide in these commandments", that's just not so. The Bible clearly frowns upon those activities (in fact, all three of those fall under the ten commandments themselves, specifically).
Most striking thing about hearing Hugh Laurie talk here is not nessicarily how different it is from House, but from A Bit of Fry and Laurie. It’s almost as if he was doing a different voice during the sketches.
I didn't know UK was much more private about their beliefs than US. Then again, everybody here runs their mouth about everything, so maybe it's not that surprising.
We've reached a stage in Britain where a politician's religion or lack there of is of no interest to voters. It would be political suicide for politicians to say they make their decisions about legislation based on their religious beliefs. There's great religious freedom in Britain, but we demand that laws are passed based on secular & humanitarian morality. BTW I've been referring to Britain not the UK. Britain consists of England, Scotland & Wales. The UK consists of Britain & Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland a politician's religion is important, but the sectarian conflict is not a religious war, it's a tribal one. I'm a keen observer of US politics, it astounds me that creationists get elected to high office.
St. Rawman That's true, & it reflects the fact that Britain is not as religious as the US. But many US politicians are not as religious as they claim to be. Statistically there must be many closet agnostics, & maybe even a few atheists. :-) Though what the difference is just a matter of semantics. My point is that here in Britain politicians can declare themselves to be devout Christians or gnostic atheists, & we think, interesting? Now what the hell do you propose to do about the solving our problems?
I just hope it doesn't take the US as long as it took the UK to reach that point. Otherwise the world is in for a long wait for us to catch up. What is sad is the US started out as one of the most secular countries in the world at the time of our birth, and in fact only in the last 100 - 120 years or so has that secularism all but disappeared.
