Agree. I may think Abacab sounds like Genesis as infants playing simple-minded repetitive dumbed-down baby music on electronic tinker toys, but hey it proves he is not following a script or taking anyone's word for it.
@miavelvet
@miavelvet 3 года назад
Well maybe his opinion sounds like "very personal" in prog community...but he literally just prefer more commercial pop stuff which most people around prefer (people outside of prog community). I personally hate that music. Too pop, too mainstream, too boring.
@jimmycampbell78
@jimmycampbell78 3 года назад
@@miavelvet Not always. I think he likes to go against the grain. With some prog/rock bands yes, Popoff likes their more commercial music. With other bands though, he will go for the more obscure or cult stuff when everyone praises the commercial side. I think often the first album you heard or the music you grew up with can strongly influence your view on a band.

Yes!! One of my favorites!! To me, the Apex high point for Floyd! It had Roger’s very harsh and bitter lyrics, but was tempered by the astounding music by Gilmour, Wright, and Mason! The last album that felt truly an entire band effort! They had created and played over half this album live for years, so the final recorded version was perfection to me! Gilmour’s guitar parts were the best he’s ever done! IMO! Yes, The Wall was their biggest hit, but I felt the turn away from the band, and more focus on Water’s personal issues. It does contain some of my favorite Floyd songs, but find it hard to listen to start to finish. Animals was the last Floyd album I could set on repeat, and listen to over and over!
@Geezer-yf8hv
@Geezer-yf8hv 2 года назад
@Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast DSOTM and WYWH are also 2 of my favorites! They contain that “warm” sound they perfected, with those warm and soothing sax parts, and the sexy female backup vocals; “that “space cadet glow” Waters later referred to in the Wall! I loved Animals for the return of the basic band, with no extra elements thrown in, just the band playing the music, (I know live, they had Snowy White playing extra guitar parts and bass parts)! This was also at a time when punk rock was the “new thing”. The whole incident with Johnny Rotten wearing a “I hate Pink Floyd” tee shirt and all. I think Roger took this as a challenge and competition! “I was a punk while you noobs were still in diapers” thing! His lyrics in Animals were harsher than anything the punks could come up with. He finally released his socialist/anarchist ideas. Even dropped the F-bomb on “Pigs: 3 Different Kinds”, (the first time I heard this on a major record)! I still love the album, but feel his vitriol spilled over into the concerts, led to his antagonism against the fans, led to the spitting incident, then the Wall. After the Wall, I thought, OK, he got this out of his system, (had given himself a mental and emotional enema), but then we got the Final Cut, which was more of the same, (even worse IMO), and I just got tired of Roger’s world view after that!!

Came from a classical background rather than blues (one of the reasons I love Robert Fripp and Steve Howe so much as well) and always knew what notes to play and when to play them. The moods and dimensions he brought to the table were incendiary. He could play a helluva solo when needed too. Extremely tasteful player and a huge influence on my playing. Genesis - Foxtrot 3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus 4. King Crimson - Starless And Bible Black 5. Kansas - Leftoverture 6. Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories 7. Rush - Hemispheres 8. Yes - Drama 9. Pink Floyd - Animals 10. UK - Danger Money Honorable Mention: well it's hard to even do this cus there are easily another 50 albums worthy of the Top 10. OK, a few... King Crimson - Red, King Crimson - Lark's Tongue In Aspic, Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III, Nektar - Recycled, Nektar - Remember The Future, Yes - Close To The Edge, Yes - Relayer, Yes - Going For The One, Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All, Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water, Santana - Caravanserai, Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts, David Bowie - Scary Monsters, Focus - Focus 3, The Electric Light Orchestra - The Electric Light Orchestra, Rick Wakeman - Six Wives Of Henry VIII, Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love, 10CC - The Original Soundtrack, Premiata Forneria Marconi - Photos Of Ghosts, Roxy Music - Roxy Music, Soft Machine - Third, Camel - Snow Goose, Kansas - Point of Know Return, Genesis - Selling England By The Pound, Genesis - A Trick of the Tail, Genesis - Duke, Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, The Moody Blues - A Question Of Balance, Bruford - One Of A Kind, Chicago - Chicago III, Chicago VII, Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory, Hatfield and the North - The Rotters' Club, Robert Fripp - Exposure, Supertramp - Crime Of The Century, Journey - Dream, After Dream, Peter Hammill - Fool's Mate, Acqua Fragile - Mass Media Stars, Jon Anderson - Olias Of Sunhillow, Egg - The Polite Force, Caravan - In The Land of Grey and Pink, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco, Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 1, Happy The Man - Crafty Hands, Barclay James Harvest - Octoberon, The Move - Looking On, The Buggles - Adventures In Modern Recording, Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte, National Health - Of Queues and Cures, Procol Harum - A Salty Dog, Curved Air - Phantasmagoria, Eddie Jobson - Zinc, Talking Heads - Remain In Light, Greenslade - Greenslade, Rush - A Farewell To Kings, Planet P - Planet P Project, Godley & Creme - Freeze Frame... since I don't know how to stop - I'll just stop. Pete I just have to mention I have always heard the same thing about Kansas! People saying they're not a Prog Band. Bullshit! It's true, though that they are an anomaly of sorts. They had incredible pop success, and arguably their two most progressive albums also had their two biggest hits on them. And they were BIG hits. Dust In The Wind could kind of be predicted, but Carry On Wayward Son is probably the most complex track ever to hit the Top 20. Who saw that coming? I know the song is catchy, but it's as complex as most prog of that decade. Despite the amazing chart success Kansas were an extremely progressive band in every way. I also meet some resistance when I bring up Rush - there are those that consider Rush hard rock, but not progressive. Again, bullshit! Even after their 'masterpiece' years, which I consider to be 2112 through Moving Pictures, they continued to put out great great and challenging music. I didn't always like the directions that they chose to explore, but I always respected their exploration. This, I say, is the true meaning of 'progressive' isn't it? I mean, we all have this sort of traditional formula that we think of as how a 'progressive' band should sound - you know, interesting lyrics sung by unique singers, prominent keyboards, virtuoso players showing their chops on complex arrangements with shifting time signatures. But the minute a band or solo artist leaves that recognizable 70's formula, all the sudden it becomes a debate. Although my list is full of that formula - hell it's a top 10 - I generally take the much broader and inclusive view - as per my 'honorable mentions.' So in addition to Rush and Kansas I would also include Santana and Chicago among many other debatables. Hell even Led Zeppelin was called progressive rock but some early 70s journalists. I agree and always have included Led Zep in the discussion. People are much too precious with their genres and sub genres. Anywho... fun show!! More reviews coming.

@@EnosEverything Talking Heads were very progressive. The true meaning has gotten lost over the years. People class Prog Rock as music from a period but during the period in question it was just called prog, it included fusion, classical, electronic, World and in fact any form. I'm in my 60s, we were there. We classed Talking Heads as prog, Fripp, Belew, Eno, Jon Hassell all played on their albums for gods sack. They are as prog as it gets, as Rick Wakeman said of Radiohead and he was spot on.
@EnosEverything
@EnosEverything 3 года назад
Yes, they were progressive but using them as an example of prog is a complete nonsense... By your theory every band that ever made morte than one abum is progressive asyou'd like to think that there music PROGRESSED between the first and second albums... So TALK TALK , WISHBONE ASH, URIAH HEEP, BUDGIE , MAN even FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS were progressive by your argument.. True prog was the prog rock of GENTLE GIANT , KING CRIMSON , VAN DER GREAF GENERATOR etc.etc.. I'm 68 and went through it all also... Oh and GOD'S SAKE is spelt thus , GOD'S SACK is where he kept his Christmas presents and loot.!!!! - if you want to hear some fine new music check out LUNATIC SOUL and the album THROUGH SHADED WOODS.... you won't be disappointed.

@stuartraybould6433 3 года назад
@@EnosEverything Those bands were prog, especially Wishbone Ash with it's mix of rock and folk, Argus sounds nothing like There's the Rub which is nothing like New England? As far as spelling goes that was my phone and I didn't check, oh dear me🤦‍♂️ I know Lunatic Soul and I like it as well as Riverside but that I wouldn't call progressive, more regressive. Good yes but nothing that hasn't been done before. That's what progressive is. No not everyone is progressive. For example, Elbow are great, I like them a lot but if you listened to any album you would know it's them. Progressive is change. For example, King Crimson Lizard, sounds absolutely nothing like Discipline and that sounds nothing like The Power to Believe. Pink Floyd's Meddle sounds nothing like Wish You Were Here and that is not The Wall. VDGG Pawn Hearts sounds nothing like Still Life. Thus Talking Heads 77 sounds nothing like Remain in Light which sounds nothing like Naked. I could go on and on. There is a big difference. It was the mags that called prog, prog rock when Punk started. Wishbone Ash, Man, Family all prog bands as far as I'm aware. Talk Talk we're definitely progressive. Riverside, Opeth, Porcupine Tree. Pineapple Thief all nice and classed as prog rock but not progressive at all, regressive, it's all been done. Now Pain of Salvation are progressive, Radiohead are progressive, Autechre are progressive, Jagga Jazzist are progressive, Supersilent are progressive again I could go on. Steven Wilson not, regressive. Although he changes his style it's always something that's been done before. You probably wouldn't class David Bowie as prog but there as never been anyone more progressive than Bowie. Wobbler, The Flower Kings, Neal Morse etc all classed as prog rock but they are anything but. As good as they are, it's still regressive, been done before. Klaus Schulze Timewind sounds nothing like Audentity, now that's progressive. Prog still lives in bands like Pain of Salvation, Between the Burried and Me, Vennart, etc. Not through Steven Wilson and Co. The true meaning of progressive has been lost partly because of mags putting wrong labels on music and partly people not understanding the original term. Progressive is something that is completely new at time of release. Ask any of the original musicians and they will give you the same explanation as I have tried, rather poorly. You probably won't agree with me but you are wrong but nevermind. Stay safe. Oh by the way, check your own spelling before picking up someone else🤦‍♂️

What a treat to hear Martin 's shout for Kevin Moore, Chroma Key and O.S.I! He echoes my feelings with respect to all 3 Chroma Key albums - they've been favourites of mine for a number of years - good time to revisit them.

For true progressive rock fans The 70's italian school of progressive rock (a genre of it's own) probably released the top tier albums in all of history (along with UK)..released during the same years or earlier and surpassing some of the already well-known mainstream UK prog rock albums: there's hundreds. One of them being and a personal favorite: "Museo Rosenbach-Zarathustra" 1973

A great prog band from the 70’s hardly anyone talks about is Hatfield And The North from the Canterbury scene. They released 2 records. A self titled record titled Hatfield And The North from 1973, and another called The Rotters Club from 1975. This is their masterpiece and should belong in any top 10 prog list. This is a jazz fusion classic. Flawless.

A difficult one. You could go with the classic albums and bands, but sometimes a lesser known one is just fantastic. And what is prog? We all know the genre, but it can be really wide. I just listed the ones I thought up first King Crimson - The Power to Believe Sky Architect - Nomad RPWL - Beyond Man and Time Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Genesis - Wind and Wuthering Mike Oldfield - Amarok HFMC - HFMC Philhelmon - Perpetum Immobile Kayak - Isis Camel - Rajaz Marillion - Misplaced Childhood ELP - Trilogy Styx - The Grand Illusion Some classics, some lesser known, but nevertheless love it, probably missed many...
