Relationship? Where'd you learn that word one of those park Avenue head shrinkers? Theres nothing a dego understands better than a slap in the mouth or a slug
Polly (his American wife in real life, was so lovely and smart) but I've never seen so many talented actors, regardless of super hot Polly. Prunella Scales was superb as the fictional wife.
The comedy timing of Andrew Sachs is something that isn't appreciated enough. I lose it with the little nod of acceptance he does after the slap in the first clip
I'm 12 and I LOVE this! Fawlty towers is class. Better than any sitcom today! "Where is door?" "Ah!" "Door is gone!" "Where? Here...?" BANG WHACK BANG! Hil. Ar. I. Ous!
Just brilliant; people misunderstand that the joke was as much on Basil as Manuel. It’s a form of double-edged parody and in no way racist. It’s a shame we’ve become so overly sensitive and unable to see that comedy is so subtlety multilayered.
Oh my god I love this so much. This Basil, this basil's wife, this smack on the head!! thats my all time favorite quote thank you for putting this on ;-)
This is a typical day at my work. Dealing with non English speaking customers. I feel like basil fawlty when he says “ please try to understand before one of us dies”
a co star of this programme said that john cleese could be sadistic, cruel and hurt them many times with his antics..Andrew sachs recounted that episode where john cleese hit his head with the teaspoon. He said he thought that would be the end but he ran the spoon down his forehead and nose.! H e said that hurt a lot
"He's from Barcelona..." The emergency way of instantly fixing any embarrassing situation involving Manuel and other people's appreciation of what exactly is happening! 😂
It's my birthday lol It's my birthday lol Coming here leaving my sister's my mother in Spain You Manuel you and basil make this program it one of my favorite I grew up on it Thank you and R.i.p .
I love the one with the dirty spoon (manuel thinks it's clean, Basil doesn't) !!! It's my favorite part.Too bad it wasn't in this. Also the "man with beard" scene it genius!!!
One of my best friends has a Spanish mother and grew up in Spain. He said one of the biggest insults in the Madrid area is, "Your mother has sour milk."
"Please, please try to understand before one of us dies!" :D I love watching the interviews with Andrew Sachs (the actor who played Manuel so perfectly), because he's so the exact opposite of Manuel in manner and voice-- very, very articulate, posh-sounding Brit actor, which just goes to show you how talented he was that he so completely changed to become this character so very different from the man you'd see on the street (and apparently he actually liked being anonymous and not recognized on the streets even at the peak of Fawlty Towers' popularity-- gave him some nice quiet anonymity in his down-time from a long-week of shooting!)
Andreas Siegfried Sachs, geb. 7.
One of the best tv programs ever! I love british humour. Black Adder, Mr Bean, Keeping up apperences. The list is endless :))) If this was to be aired today though, hell would be raised. People would be screaming about racism...
i was not a fan of python,,,this show ,,,i love! so few episodes,,,and yet it still lives on!!! my favorite is the Germans,,,,,or when Basil gives his mini a "dam good thrashing"lol,,,, priceless!
After dealing with actual spanish waiters you realize how unrealistics this was .. They are usually hot tempered and dont take shit from anyone, specially a guiri or foreigner. You dont even need to get physical, whenever they feel disrespected in the slightest they either ignore you, insult you or punch you in the face. But this kind of spineless behaviour is unheard of amongst them. I guess the actor was not even spanish, otherwise he would know of this cultural nuance.
No. Manuel was originally written as spanish by Cleese and Booth. During the initial casting Andrew Sachs wasn't sure he could pull off a convincing spanish accent and suggested to Cleese that he play Manuel as german - because being half german he could do that accent well.
