This game really picks up once you get out of the first town. I sat on the living room floor and watched my dad beat this over 20 years ago. Awesome times back then
Its funny, but this is one of the few lines from this era of gaming I remember (I was only 6 when we got our NES and 8 when I playee this). To this day, its still the game that I cite as starting my love of rpgs.
I'm 43 and I keep finding myself humming the shopkeepers tune, for no other reason than it's in the archival playlist of my mind. That and the chocobo soundtrack.
I got this game as a Christmas present back when I was 8. It was interesting, but I didn't understand how to play fully(casting magic escaped me, so I could never make it past the first boss), and it had to compete with the second Ninja Turtles game for attention. Then one day I got sick at school and had to stay out for a week. During that time I picked up Faxanadu again, and just so happened to figure out how to cast magic...the rest of that week is just a joyful blur of beating this game. And I must have gone through it a dozen times till my nes finally gave out. Notpads full of Mantras, and a childhood full of great memories. This music in engraved in my conscious. Thanks Falcom and Hudson!
I think i was also 8 at the time. Also got it for christmas. I'm not a native English speaker, and did not learn English for a couple more years from school. Casting magic and shit was OK, I got that alright, but taking elixirs to the three fountains and using wingboots? Way over my head.
I hear ya michael, I also had wonderful memories of this game. Although it took me all summer to finally beat it. The year was 1994, I got it from a yard sale. Great memories!!!!
There is something magical about 8-bit music, and this is one of the best soundtracks on any NES game! Great memories of playing this with my dad back in the day. Still dust it off and beat it every so often. I love the Dartmoor and the Mist themes the best; they used to creep me out!
Wonderful memories of playing this with my dad too. I remember we hit the land of mist super late on a Friday night. The music was eery and unnerving, making me glance over my shoulder at shadows moving on the walls. We played all night and emerged from the mist just as the sun was starting to come up outside. Freaking epic!
The Intro song of Faxanadu, along with "streets of desolation" from the Batman NES game, are my two favorite songs of the NES library. It's friggin' impressive what the game developers managed to accomplish with the blips and beeps.
Indeed, but I've seen NES music move beyond "Blips and beeps", it is now an entity of its own that is godly magic, and music that will remain pure for the rest of time :)
Man every time I listen to this it reminds me of when I was 15 locked in my room so into this game! It was hard to put the controller down, I always thought this was one under appreciated gem.
This soundtrack is the definition of 'underrated.' Hell, I don't even remember finishing this game as a kid, but this soundtrack ALWAYS comes back to me. I don't think there is a single bad track in this OST. The 'Mantra', 'Elven King', and 'Guru' themes, in particular, are some of the most atmospheric tracks I've heard - from the NES, no less!
I have very fond memories of playing Faxanadu as a child and while the game would be considered mediocre by today's standards, the graphics, music, and gameplay was considered mindblowing at the time. It had features that other nes games did not have like different armor and swords showing on your body when you change them.
The music starting at 17:50 was stuck in my head since my childhood! Now at 30 I've decided to find out in what damn game was that music... Faxanadu! Took me days to find it out, finally!! :D
Similar story here! The mantra music would get stuck in my head sometimes. I didn't know at first which NES game it was other than the game had the line "the wells have dried up". One thing led to another and I luckily found this video!
When I was 10 I went on a family vacation in the outer banks for two weeks. The house we stayed at had a Nintendo with this game. Needless to say this game took up most of my attention. Such a great game.
I grew up listening to so much of Bomberman Hero's OST that it's probably a huge reason why I am so into DnB, Jungle, and electronic music. I love digging into her older works! Some of SNES Bomber OSTs are NUTS!
There was a wooden jungle gym at my elementary school that me and my friends called World Tree. I used to run around on it with a pencil pretending i was shooting Deluge from it...in retrospect it wasn't the safest way to play, but damn fun!
Lol, I think that thing is falling apart in the woods behind Fairview... at least the games won't deteriorate. I played Metal Storm the other day and thought about playing Nintendo at your Mom's hose in 3rd grade, those were the days!
Faxanadu was an excellent game. You could figure it out readily from speaking to NPCs. There were (limited) elements of exploration and misdirection therein involved in moving through the world tree. It was interesting. I'm happy to see that it has slowly started appearing on Top 100/50/25 and even a few Top 10 lists. Would really like to see some sort of sequel somewhere.
I did a few times, got it when I was 15, beat it about 3 or 4 times by the time I was 17. I always thought it was a fun game and a bit under appreciated.
Once when I was 10 and again at like 22. It was even more awesome the second time. Never any cheats of course. Thank god for you tube, I LOVE the music
One of the most under-rated games of nintendo nes and all other consoles...Fortunately,i played this game when i was 10.Good memories indeed ! thx for the share, buddy.
I still have this game, I remember I was a child. I admit that my memories are now really hazed, but I still remeber those times of airiness I spent a lot of time to end this game, still remembering how it was hard and challenging. (Sorry for my bad English! ;) )
It was my 13th birthday that I rented this and Dr chaos. Great times awesome music I'll never forget it. Thanks for the upload UT surprises me how many people like enjoy listening to old school game music simply awesome
This has been one of my favorite games ever since I was a child. Nowadays when I play it though, I use my phone to take a picture of the TV instead of writing down the passwords. It makes it a LOT easier lol!
Erlisch1337 They were days alright, lol. My handwriting was/is so bad, and those passwords so long, that I'd either write em down incorrectly or be unable to read them later lol
One of the greatest nes games ever made so few will ever get the pure pleasure of playing it such a shame. Btw Niko I love your channel keep up the great nes osts
Play it now. I beat it for the first time when I was 8 and it seemed like such a feat. I played it again about a year ago and it wasn't near as difficult.
Such memories!! I like the theme that starts at 12:00. It creates an atmosphere of mystery and melancholy at the same time. I believe it's called the "Land of Dworf". Yep...that's how they spell it in the game manual: "DWORF". LOL.
It's a pretty excellent game! One of my favorites from the NES-era, up there with The Battle of Olympus, The Guardian Legend, Final Fantasies, Dragon Warriors, etc.
I never played the game, but I remember hearing the theme on "Captain N: The Gamemaster" and I just HAD to hear the original, and MAN! I am NOT disappointed! :)
Yep, I forget sometimes how the old NES sounds. I just bought one a few weeks ago from a friend. I'm just so used to games these days. I believe I need to find this game and revisit it. :)
I loved this game, played through it many times. It's amazing how the soundtracks made the games even better sometimes. The Evil One must be the one who gave this a thumbs down. Such a classic game!!
+Michel Newcomb I am literally in process of learning overworld on my keyboard!! A tune that never has left my head since I was a child. NES had some of the greatest and catchiest melodies ever!!
I've heard Overworld theme in a flash game years ago - glad to have found the full OST here. (this is the game, with a remixed theme www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/203006)
i played the hell out of this game back when it came out; glued to the TV playing NES, not answering when i was getting called for supper! 4:44 Shopkeepr theme FOREVER! such great memories of nintendo. this game had just the right balance of gameplay; how to describe ? castlevania meets final fantasy.
The thing about Faxanadu's graphics is that the limited palette was intended to give the game more of a grimdark feel. I think they might not be as detailed as some other games, but they suit the game's atmosphere much better than something in the style of Zelda 2 would.
@@ImaginalComponent that's correct and actually that game is part of the Dragon Slayer franchise and is called Xanadu: Dragon Slayer 2. Faxanadu is a spin off or side story that isn't related but equally fun.
I love how you comment back to every video I post on. That is awesome and I always take the time to like your videos. Still waiting for that MIG29 8-bit stereo version though :(
brings back warm child hood memory s. i dont have my nes anymore. but they have it online :) think i will play it! hahah old time passwords you had to write on paper!
This game was awesome and underrated. I honestly think the graphics are just as good if not better than in Zelda 2. I would also be as bold to say the music is better, or at least has more good tracks than in Zelda 2.
