I was roofied at a festival with new coworkers/boss and woke up in a bare house in just a bed on the ground with a stranger, my clothes completely off. No one believed me. I do now. 💜 I've spent the better part of my life trying to pull apart at the seams why people fight so hard against believing victims. Obviously I don't think it is a single faceted answer, it's complicated. I think misogyny has a lot to do with rape culture no matter the gender of the victim, absolutely. But, I also work in racial justice and education, and have spent a lot of my life doing LGBTQ+ activism as well. The victim blaming is everywhere, *especially* when the victim is someone with less societal and social power. If the accused perpetrator is liked or has power or possesses those societal privileges? Watch out. What I've come to believe after all this time is that whether it is S.A. or police brutality or domestic violence or crappy disability benefits or whatever - people with societal privilege would far rather put energy into discrediting us, because then they don't have to sit with the fact that they aren't doing jack shit to make the world a better place while other people suffer. They don't need to face up to the times they looked the other way while their friend hit on the drunkest girl at the party. They don't need to consider that while they are sitting around in their little bubble where these things have never happened to them, other people are experiencing such horrific despair that sometimes living another day seems too unbearable. They are absolute chicken shits, and what genuinely pisses me off is that they do it in a way where they spread all this misinformation from the safety of their little bubble without even bothering to do the barest amount of research because they GENUINELY don't think it matters because WE don't matter to them. But you think they want to sit down with me and have it all laid out for them? They are absolute cowards who cannot fathom surviving what we have. If you have to publicly and continuously eviscerate a victim in order to feel good about what you are doing--maybe it's time to reconsider what you are doing. Or at least keeping quiet.

Letting these creeps get away with it carte blanche is how we got here. It is also REALLY important to remember that I got into the game in the 90s, and things HAVE changed. Not nearly as much as they need to, not one billionth as much as they should have. But my feelings and experiences are colored sharply by the specific circumstances I was in. I absolutely think that if one is assaulted they should go immediately to the ER. SART kits suck, but they are relatively quick and are the only chance you have to preserve that forensic evidence. Once that is gone, it is gone and depending on where you are there are very often outcry witnesses and counselors who can accompany you during the process (tho I am not sure how this is being handled under Covid, it's hospital dependent). The one thing that is entirely universal to ALL victims victims survivors is that however one feels in the immediate aftermath, that will change many times as you go through the grieving and healing process--so preserving those forensics during the only chance you have is vital. Past that, it is so situational. I want to tell you that I would report now if I were assaulted...but as I am currently leaving a shittastic abusive marriage where there is mountains of evidence, multiple witnesses, a half dozen doctor's reports and even our kid is begging for Dad to move out and yet everyone is taking his side? I'm not feeling lots of faith in my fellow people right now. I also didn't report it when he physically assaulted me in September and I nearly died after he denied me medical care. It's really fucking easy for these assholes to sit there and poke holes in a story they didn't even see as important enough to read through before they discredited a victim. They dont see the ripples of how that gets remembered by people and exists in their heads when it comes time where some of them will have a need for speaking out. They are so not affected. Given the fact that they posted a video about it and there’s a literal text msg that was seen by David but wasn’t talked about til now is enough proof for me to believe. Dom also has been accused of this behaviour many times before so why wouldn’t they believe her? Like you said, David was seen as RU-vid’s “sweetheart” which makes it difficult for any victim to speak up against. People were speaking up against Marilyn Manson for years and were called liars because there wasn’t enough “evidence”. It wasn’t until this year where the victims are now finally being heard but the cult mentality some people have creates a toxic environment that enables awful behaviour.

This is why I won’t ever press charges either. SA victims are out so deeply under a microscope. They try to pick a part anything that might excuse what the abuser did. I because very fearful of being looked at by men as well, became a much more conservative person

@@cassandracornwell7595 I went that route and tried to press charges a few year later. Police don't care and don't take s/a and/or r claims seriously. It's like a glorified therapy session of you telling your story, but receiving no help or information. They tell you not to expect anything when you leave and when you call, text, or e-mail investigators they don't even bother responding. It's been almost a year now and I've heard nothing and nothing will come of me telling my story. I relived a traumatic incident for no reason, to this day I wish i never bothered coming forward.
