The FDA issued a new warning on July 13, 2011 about the use of mesh in pelvic reconstructive surgeries. Dr. Norton describes some of the risks associated with vaginal mesh commonly used in surgery to correct pelvic prolapse.
Thank you for posting this. I don't understand why mesh is being used at all when the complications can be so severe. I had a sling put in 6 months ago & have had nothing but problems since. I can now hardly walk, and need to travel across the country to go to someone who can remove the mesh.
Thank you for this video. When will the FDA make actually DO something? Their warnings came out years ago, but doctors are still putting these products in more and more people, rather than less. =(
Thank you Dr. Norton for speaking out against the use of mesh. I have been systematically marginalized by a countless number of OB/GYNs and urologists throughout the state of Utah. I was never referred to the U. I gave up on help in Utah. Fortunately I found meaningful relief with laparascopic removal by Dr. Miklos in Atlanta. In my opinion the indiscriminate use of mesh for pelvic organ prolapse is among the most egregious social injustices ever perpetrated by a prof. medical organization.
Patients do not have access to information that would help them to decide if surgical mesh is the best option. The FDA relies on 510(k) clearance requiring no clinical testing and there is no registry of implanted devices. Patients must rely on you- doctors- to stop using surgical mesh for this purpose to protect patients from aggressive medical device marketing. Remove the demand for this product. Harmed patients cannot be "repaired" or compensated. fida-advocate.blogspot
