Seeing this reminds me that I'm glad my work closed down. I used to work in a car wash, and it was dangerous.

Great video coverage. Looks like FDNY has adopted the new flow path control protocols recommended by NIST, UL and ISFSI.

Being a retired firefighter (captain) I understand it does take time to evolve the incident for getting tactics established, but will agree with several post it does seem like a whole lot of firefighters standing around doing a whole lot of nothing?

Firefighters favourite pastime - venting fires instead of putting water on them!!!! What a waste of time - put some water on the fire at least at the same time. Venting simply allows hot gases to escape but only water puts it out!! Great coverage NYC 911 News Hurrah - at last somebody has thought of putting some water on the fire!! Can only see ONE charged line in the shot Are all the guys round the other side of the building or are they standing around like the groups on this side?

I never realized just how many utility and power lines there were until I watch the firefighters try to navigate those ladders with hoses up in the air. And the wind didn't make their job any easier.

To all the critics--A 2 alarm response in New York can bring up to 12 rigs to the scene.Staffing in N Y is 6 on the engines,6 on the ladders-6 on the rescues.So ,it easy to see how you can have 72 firefighters on scene.With the fire load and congestion ,that manpower level is where it should be.

That's one hellacious burn. I can't believe there's so much fire. WTF is inside a car wash to make it burn like THAT???

Reading all these comments about firefighters standing around doing nothing come from people who know nothing about firefighting what is not filmed is the pre arrival the first alarm assignment all hands working until chief gives the order to evacuate building was fully evolved and video shows once the fire was venting water was applied and when main body of fire is knocked down most of the guys standing by will enter the building and overhaul and knock down hot spots fdny has 25,000 + structure fires annually RU-vid don't show just how good these guys are.

Thanks. I'm no firefighter and have only been watching various firefighting videos for a couple of weeks and I recognized that almost from the beginning. I like when I can hear the IC and the ff's talking back and forth, too

Waiting for it to rain they don't appear to like using water on fires I think they are trained to hopefully wait to see if it burns itself out insurance company's must love these fireman

....Why are the bucket ladder guns used rather than the engine deck guns? Is one better than the other?
@tommyd1542
@tommyd1542 6 лет назад
Before FDNY acquired their huge fleet of tower ladders deck pipes on pumpers and hose wagons were used quite often. FDNY tower ladders are versatile pieces of equipment where the bucket can be moved into areas where needed without moving the actual apparatus. Deck pipes on FDNY pumpers are still used at fires today whenever the need arises but seeing one used on video is somewhat rare.

What is the rational for that approach?

That is the New York City style of fire fighting everybody standing around with their hands in their pockets we all know about fast teams and all that other stuff but some of that turnout gear looks brand new

Clearly the manpower needs leadership and direction. or it Must be the largest RIT team I've ever seen? I wonder if other FF's were working this fire from the other side out of view? There has to be some better explanation that what we can see here.

Howard they attacked it from two angles which I was able to film. I don't know anything about "fire science" but what is your suggestion on how they couldve handled it better?

Seems like there's no evident chain-of-command or leadership happening,
@craddocraddoc

NYC 911 NEWS clearly the fire is pushed by strong wind and would spread through the two openings you can see in the Video. Every firefighter should know that. So instead of even more venting through holes in the roof or sending out 3-4 unnecessary ladder trucks for a fire on ground level, get a deck gun and a few men ready to attack the fire. The parked cars could have easiely been saved and the fire been knocked down before rolling through the complete building. You can see that the ladder truck gets water about two minutes after the fire gets pushed out heavily through the big windows/doors. That's way too late...

Too many men standing around doing nothing what are the senior officers doing the fire should be attacked with all the resources that they have
@tommyd1542

I don't know if you watched the same video I did but I saw four tower ladders and multiple hose lines being deployed in order to knock this fire down and eventually bring it under control. In regards to fire fighters standing around some are members of the fast truck (fire fighter assist and search team) who only become involved in operations if another fire fighter is injured, becomes trapped, etc. In regards to additional fire fighters standing around some are awaiting orders to relieve members fighting the fire. Others are most likely ladder company members awaiting orders to go inside and begin overhaul operations once the fire is brought under control. After the fire is brought under control they'll be pulling down and opening up ceilings, walls, fixtures, voids, etc in order to access hidden pockets of fire so engine company members can completely extinguish the fire. Please note the fire building is a former combination car wash oil change facility and may very well contain numerous hazardous materials. The incident commander was well aware of this fact and this may have played a huge part of when and where he decided to deploy his members. Each fire fighter there has a job to do and most if not all of them will eventually be put to work before FDNY leaves the scene.

Tommy D well it is obvious that the nyfd operate a different system to Dublin fire service
@tommyd1542
@tommyd1542 6 лет назад
Ernie, I'm sure the Dublin fire service is an excellent professional fire service but most large city fire departments in the USA operate very differently from their European counterparts. I know this because the subject comes up quite often on RU-vid, Facebook, fire department blog sites, etc. Please take care and stay safe while on the scene of a fires or emergency incident.

Tommy D Do FDNY not use thermal imaging cameras? In Lancashire, the firefighters would use thermal imaging cameras to check for pockets of fire. If they found any, THEN they would pull open the wall/roof etc, they wouldn't destroy the property anyway.
