Ahhh 1999 Obsolete just released, Christian, Raymond, and Dino don't all hate each other and Burt's vocal chords aren't literal swiss cheese. Miss this era
@@NatureandSpirit111 Yeah, Burton has terrible technique. It was only a matter of time before his destroyed his vocal cords to the point of lasting damage. I just wish that he'd learnt good vocal technique, because he'd have had a much longer and more auspicious career. He fucked it.
Burton with a NIN cap? Check. Christian with a SOIA tee? Check. Everyone bouncing off the fucking walls in this gig, so much so even the security detail was banging like Beavis & Butthead? CHECK! Damn, this era was epic.
The way Burton is still kneeling in the dark as Zero Signal ends and Self Bias Resistor begins. It's as if he's trying to compose himself still from the emotional numb ending of the previous song. He walks off stage, finds himself, and he erupts into the upbeat spunk that's required for that specific vocal delivery. Also it takes balls to put yourself vulnerable out there like that. These are amazing people that do this for us.
Burton is a unique individual who is dedicated to his craft. You can easily tell when someone is clearly in it for the money. Burton poured his heart and soul into each song, even when he didn't have the energy or his voice was shot or when he was sick. He still persisted and maneuvered his way through these tough songs. These songs are truly hard to sing. Seriously. Burton and I have a simular Vocal pattern and speech pattern. And I sort of sound like him but my voice is a little deeper. Anyway, long story short, it's truly hard to sing Fear Factory songs. Even Replica for Crying out loud. Lol. I respect him a lot for getting through each show with all of the touring they did.
I had the pleasure of making music with Ray back in 1990. He was already in FF, but had some down time and said he could help our band get started before going on tour. I still have a cassette recording of us jamming, even messing around with some Cure. A month into it , he said his goodbyes and wished us luck. It was a pleasure. He is a great guy and always says hi with a big hug when we do run into him.
I was a fan of Fear Factory in the mid-late nineties (my teen years) but was never able to see them live. From the bottom of my heart: this recording means so much to me. Whether you realize it or not, seeing this is incredibly emotional and important to some of us. Thank you very much for posting!
I come back to this every now and again. More so lately knowing Burton left. I have been seeing more and more FF reaction vids online these days. I hope Burton knows how much he's influenced folks.
@@revivedfears Always found it interesting that Gene, who is a legend on the kit in his own right. Had trouble playing some of these songs and basically just had to give it up to Raymond.
@@DireAxis yeah, he admitted he found zero signal tough to play and complimented Ray's playing on the original track. You could tell watching him play during his time in FF that he had to seriously concentrate.
@@DeepSouthPal84 fuck yeah, Ray was an absolute beast and has writing credits on all of their best material, the way dino and Burt tried to undermine how important he was to FF during the later years of the band pissed me off so much.
I´ve witnessed them during that tour in Cologne, Germany. BUT! Let´s not forget about John Bechdel! The guy behind the keyboard on stage has had an important role during FFs most succsessful years in the 90s. While he was not the one who created the electronic landscape on their records (like Rhys Fulber did in the studio), he was on stage triggering all the short samples, loops and playing the melodic synths live. And FF probably didn´t even play to a click track at all. Just like what he´s been doing with Ministry since over a decade now. Back then it was a common method of utilizing a "machinist" for that purpose. This got somehow lost due to click tracks, in-ear, backing tracks and automation (which is not a crime to do imho). This guy has been with bands like Killing Joke, Prong, FF and Ministry and is imho one of the underrated and least recognized musicians in the whole "industrialized" music genres. Thumbs up for the upload and thumbs up for John Bechdel. If you get the chance, stream and buy the brilliant documentary about him which is titled "Killing the Joke: The John Bechdel Story".
In case you´re curious about his machinery job: check out what he´s doing for Ministry on stage: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4jOZAT5AR38.html
10:12 prepare for pure badassery. They played Zero Signal and Self Bias Resistor like a devastation streak. What a war machine FF was these days, the sound was so powerful.
Love FF. But well he didn't hit the right notes though. Just check out Resurrection. Burtons screaming style doesn't go well with hitting the high notes afterwards. Basically he fucks up his throat too much. I know cause I've fucked up my throat the same way all the time trying to scream like Burton back when i was a kid rocking out to Arhcetype. His screaming sounds rad though. I can't stand this half-whispering like Randy Blythe etc.
Yeah, his growling technique is very inefficient, even though it sounds so brutal. Modern vocalists use techniques that are 90% as powerful but put very little pressure on the vocal chords, not much more than speaking. Devin Townsend and Tatiana from Jinjer can growl all they want then hit high notes no problem, the trick is that they aren't asspounding their vocal chords. Burton's style is more like Pantera vocals, but Phil didn't need to sing afterwards :P
@@AutoRiff tbf, Townsend couldn't hit notes for shit either during the SYL era. His improvements during the last decade is pretty incredible tho. Not being on drugs all the time might've helped as well.
Dude. DUDE. THIS WAS MY FIRST EVER FF CONCERT . We missed most of Zero Signal outside in line, but heard it through the concrete walls. Holy fuck this is like a religious experience.
@@thx3188 I just happened on this video, and I was sitting under the balcony while the water poured on top of us. Regardless, we were so lucky to catch them on this tour.
Come back to this periodically. Over the years since I discovered Fear Factory, I’ve kinda settled on Pisschrist probably being my favourite track of theirs. Really great song, awesome performance here
Dude, straight up! That song absolutely KILLS. I blew my brother away one day when he came down to the basement and heard me practicing the main riff. Said it sounded just like the cd. Put a smile on face 🤘💀🤘
As much as I love FF and as much as it pains me to say this, they'll never be the same or this good live again. Burton's cleans were spot-on, and him and Dino were much more energetic onstage.
I was too young to see them live in this era, but I've seen videos of them live before and not long after this concert. Honestly, this is by far the best performance by them I've seen/heard
cooliovasquez Fear Factory were unstoppable in the late 90's, this gig is particularly great though. Would love to see a pro shot official DVD release of a show from this era, there must be some awesome shit in the vaults somewhere. It is sad that FF will never be what they once were, but I have to say I don't really expect them to be as energetic as back then, Dino can't be far from 50 and look at the size of him! ;p
revivedfears Their were at their best from 1992 - 2001, after that they pretty died on stage, also Burton's clean voice is so fucked up now. Love this live performance wish there was an hq audio recording of it.
I saw FF a little after this in Worcester for the release of Digimortal and every time they came back after. They were incredible back then. Raymond is one of my favorite drummers of all time live right up there with Thomas Haake.
Man they were sooooo badass back then. I saw them in '98. System of a Down opened up for them. I never heard SOAD before that show. I was 16. What a great time to be alive.
Back in the day when I was in the Marines I did security for atreyu, all we did was was head bang. That was after suicide notes and butterfly kisses. It was deff no fear factory but damn, they were good back then.
For all the recent talk of Burton being "bad live" he is absolute incredible here throughout. Except maybe "Replica" which the new guy also seems to struggle with. Something about that song must be very difficult to sing.
All these people spitting on Burton now that he's gone are just pitiful hypocrites. Pretty usual in this kind of situation in fact. This gig is just amazing...
Even the security crew were into Fear Factory vibing and headbanging, especially the guy with dreadlocks was feeling it. I can't blame them, the performance was sick as hell. This lineup of the band will be irreplaceable.
I saw them at Ozzfest 99 in Phoenix AZ this year. They were on the second stage. Burton had his shirt off and was pretty sunburned lol. It was an awesome time and such a memory. Obsolete defines my teenager hood and I played that non stop.
Damn straight. I've seen some more recent stuff and have just gone back to the albums as he can be painful to listen to. Shame cause I love me some FF, from NZ
I sincerely cant believe I came across this video. Not only was I there, I was 15. Anyways, it's so awesome to see this again so thank you so much, OH! and this was the first show i lost a shoe at in the pit...and i'm fairly certain it got thrown up on stage, so unless somebody still has a size 10 black vans with red laces...I'll just assume Burton kept it as a token of my appreciation
One of the best concerts i ever saw on video. Burton literally on fire, Dino's huge guitar sound, Christian's enthusiasm, Raymond equal to himself, the crowd... even the security guys 🤪
This was their peak as a live band! They were never better than they were on the Obsolete tour. It was perfection for Fear Factory! So happy I went and saw them on this tour!
Saw them in Duluth MN in I think 1999, in the Fitgers basement, and they were absolutely fucking AMAZING. I was 16 and they totally blew me away. Maybe only 60-70 people at the show so it was incredible to be 5 feet away from them the entire time, basically screaming right in my face. Awesome memories!!!
This is the FF I would see multiple times. Still got Dinos autograph from this tour. Burton was killing it back then with his voice power. Obsolete will always be one of my favorite metal albums.
I had no idea who they were when I saw them the first time in 98. Blew me away, I think they only played for 40 mins or so. Opened up for Slayer, my presumptive reason for being there. I don't listen to Slayer anymore really. Here I am. What a legend.
Holy fucking hell! What a show! I had already given thumbs up but forgot about this true gem. The energy the band delivers is amazing! Everything and everybody is on point. Glad to see the crowd is energized as well. Thank you so much for preserving this show!
I have no clue how I have never seen this. This was my first concert. I was so pumped to see FF live. Too bad the audio quality sucks because it was phenomenal.
If I'm not mistaken, this was at the Palladium. I was at that show. I remember how dark the venue was and after a successful crowd surf, got a chance to give Dino a knuckle high five after the guards put me down. This is a rare treat indeed, thanks for the upload!
livisdaddy2008 i saw them last year at the Worchester Palladium with Soilwork perform Demanufacture in its entirety(plus other songs) and it. Was. Insane. I have seen so many acts(Slayer,Gojira,Slipknot,Black Sabbath,Lamb of God,KoRn,Mayhem and much more) but that Fear Factory show was one I won't forget about. Burt's vocals were so strong and the energy of the place was electric the entire time. They really do still have it.
@@henrywalton5967 I couldn't agree more. I was fortunate enough to see Fear Factory play at House of Blues 2004. Right after Archetype dropped. When I saw Christian play guitar I was shocked how good.he was. Even though I shouldn't have been. Couple months later FF played same venue I didn't realize they were co-headling with Lamb of God until I got there. Both bands killed it. First and last time I saw LOG but they nailed it. I don't need to tell you how much competition FF is to any band period.
I must've seen FF more between 1998 and the early 2000s than I've seen any other band in my lifetime (Ministry a possible exception), and in '99 they were untouchable. Even with off key notes and heavy vocal enhancements Burton's vocals were earthshattering. "Welcome to the world of Fear Factory . . . Prepare for SHOCK" still gives me chills. Those shows erupted.
I'm sooooo glad i saw them four time between 97 and 99 in London uk. This show sounds killer with so much energy from the band, FF to me are Burt, Dino Christian & Raymond.
I was in Milwaukee when I saw them first time at the now shutdown modjeska theater. Their tour support was monster magnet and static-x those could not emulate the devastating power they unleashed that night. Burton was so energetic that night it hard to believe your hero's getting old before you hell I'm getting old. Great times the obsolete tour was the best tour I saw this band.
fear factory has had a few drummers but this guy was the best by far! hes into what hes doing and giving evry ounce of energy hes got and then some! its what separates the men from the boys..not to diss the current drummer he dose a great job keeping time but he just kinda sits there and that's his style. ide rather see a drummer struggle to be great than a great drummer phoning it in but that's just my 2 cents.
So I’m not sure if this Worcester performance is after or before but... I was 17. Saw them in Providence at Lupos Heartbreak Hotel. Thought it was a Wednesday night, so April 7 or 14th... But I always tell my buddies that this is one of THE top 5 shows I’ve ever been to! Thank you for uploading this so they can finally see/hear a recording of what I had the opportunity to experience. Life altering experience I’ll NEVER forget!
I just found out Obsolete Limited vinyl came out about 2 weeks ago only 2000 copies made.. Bought it already on Ebay...my favorite FF album. (Obsolete 20th Anniversary Gold vinyl)
