A shot-by-shot hickory golf course vlog featuring Long Island, NY-based hickory golfer Christian Williams playing pre-1850 featherie golf with fellow golf historian Andy Grow at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Links in the Highlands of Scotland.
Williams is an interactive golf historian with a high handicap, sharing his passion for the game through this channel where he shows how to collect, repair, and play with antique, wood-shafted golf clubs. In this round, Williams is using two replica long-nose golf clubs like the kind that would have been used during the featherie era of golf, which spanned at least 300 years prior to 1850 when golf was played with a leather ball tightly packed with feathers. Contemporary featherie golfers like Williams and Grow play with a ball made by Hickory Lane Featherie, which makes the most period-correct replica featherie ball on the market (details below). Welcome to the channel!
The links at Fortrose and Rosemarkie lay on the Chanonary Peninsula in Moray Firth. Golf was first documented on this site in 1702 and the Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club that calls the links home is the 15th oldest golf club in the world, dating to 1793. The current 18-hole layout dates to 1932 and was designed by famed architect and 5-time Open Champion, James Braid. A member of "The Great Triumvirate" with Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor, Braid was a very active course designer when he wasn't playing and played a role in the design or redesign of more than 400 courses.
This round was played by Williams and Grow during their hickory golf trip to the Highlands and Moray regions of Scotland in May 2023. Follow Andy and his hickory golf travel writings on Instagram: / hickories_and_links
