Jack Odell Hill Sr., also known as "Kalem", 69, went home to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon, August 4, 2016. He was born in Schenectady, NY on July 22, 1947 to the late John Hill Sr. and Lillian Frances (Langston) Hill and was predeceased by his oldest brother, John Hill Jr. He was a husband of one wife, Malikea Edwards (Hill); a fun-loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin and friend. At an earlier age he loved to dive, ride bikes and play sports. Later in life he enjoyed driving cars and he was also known as one the greatest dancers in his hometown. Another one of his greatest attributes was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle(s). Jack Odell Hill Sr. was an Honorable Veteran who was dutiful and faithful in the Marine Corps as a point man. He was Soldier and man of valor that served his country well, by earning two purple hearts. After his honorable discharge, he was employed as a CDTA bus driver, and because of his love for music, he played the congas, as well as in many local bands in the Capital District area. He also loved to watch football, boxing and documentaries. Because of his amazing gift of storytelling, he was interviewed in a documentary entitled the "Vietnam", a television history PBS program in 1982. Jack Sr. loved to laugh, make others laugh and smile, especially children. One of the ways he made them smile was in his volunteer service through the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. He also volunteered as a Memphis, Tennessee Patriot Guard Motorcyclist, visited hospitals, youth centers to uplift the spirits of children, and if he called you friend, he was faithful to the end. There is so much that will be missed about "Kalem". He leaves to treasure his memory sons, Jack Jr., Jamal; daughters, Jacqueline, Crystal; brother, Joseph Hill; first cousins and caregivers, Booker T. and Gloria Jones; the Langston Family; the Bergeron Family; extended family, godson, Santino Graviano; daughters, Teanna Hill, Ebony Daniels; his lifetime friends, Jimmy Douglas, Dan Wilson; 11 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. A Home-Going Service and Celebration will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, 1068 Park Avenue, Schenectady. Visitation will be from 10 to 11, before the service. Interment, with full Military Honors, will be in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville at 2 p.m., following the service. To leave the family an online condolence, please visit www.sbfuneralhome.com.

Digging for dirt? It seems to be a war crimes investigation. Damn straight! My father's best friend and fellow Eagle Scout vvas KIA in Phu Bai, July 3, 1970. He has always been with me since I saw him in a dream (nightmare) when I as about four. He was a "good guy" in my nightmare, making funny faces at me and trying to get me to not be frightened. My mother said, "Yep. That would've been just like Gary Tomlinson to do that." I've always felt a sadness about his untimely death in Vietnam, leaving behind a wife and six-month old daughter! Something always struck me as wrong about it. I've visited him at The VVall in DC and a couple of years ago, just before I as supposed to deploy to the Middle East, at his resting place at NAS Pensacola! I finally found people on Facebook who knew and flew vvith him in Vietnam and they've allowed me to join their Facebook page and I got his daughter on there so she could know them too. It was like a huge weight had been lifted off of me to find them.

First of all what you do is conduct yourself as a professional. It is a war crimes investigation because the military lost it's military bearing by even being ordered to the mission. If you want to change the designations for the member participants to make it easier then accept we were the invading, aggressive enemy seeking to restore an oppressive colonial rule that subjugated the indigenous population. Does the grunt know this? Negative, he is only the farthest reach of the will of the population he comes from in order to keep those people he comes into contact with away from his population. As an infantryman I am saddened my brothers and sisters fought and died in Viet Nam. I am also saddened my country chose the wrong side of the fight to be on because they are so afraid of communism to the point of overthrowing governments and starting wars. I also must accept some may have done their job as professionally as possible, some did commit horrible acts that should be punishable but the most heinous things to occur are when the majority looked away or didn't say anything. The culture I left the military in had changed for the better, I hope it remains that way. You want to know how a modern military reacts to those who commit war crimes? There was a very public example when the SEALs turned one of their own in. That is what professionals do! You are such a hard ass compared those softies aren't you! Here is some free advice. Don't YOU ever think could ever defend the honour of military servicemember or even should. No matter how trivial we are not to used as your political weapons. Fucking flag being burned? Free goddamn speech means more than the symbol of the country. So don't ever think it is disrespectful, it isn't. It is more disrespectful because we take our oath to our Constitution not the flag. (sorry just had to get that flag shit off my chest)

It is easy as someone who was never in the soldiers shoes to find these war crimes as abhorrent. Most of the military sent to Vietnam were very young, with limited education, broken down by the military to be killers. Vietnam was not like WW2 where your enemy was easily identified. Where military leaders where completely inept mainly due to their non understanding the new type of war. They were also pressured by the Politicians of the day who put political aspirations ahead of the lives of their men. However, all life should have meaning. The very young men who had very limited life experience put in a war they also didn’t understand scared nervous suffering from PSTD watched on as their friends died or hurt demonised the Vietnamese ppl with encouragement by their leaders did unspeakable war crimes killing many innocent men woman and children. Yes some may have been a combatant but a baby or toddler is an innocent non combatant. Nothing can change what has passed but I hope these now older men look back and take responsibility for their actions. I hope they pass on their truth so new generations understand the futility of war. I will not judge these men as they were brave enough to put themselves in danger so I can write this comment. I would like to end by saying how my heart breaks for the innocent lives lost and ponder the question why? , and what was it all for? US Australian and New Zealand troops in the main fought in good faith to help ppl that required help. Many ppl on both sides died for what? For Presidents to be elected to be re elected for Generals to get more stars for the war machine to make more money you or I could count. The next war send the rich and privileged kids first I guarantee the war will end quickly.

Yeah , because body language is a hard science and never results in presumed guilt. /s Looking at someone you suspect is guilty based on their body language is what police call the Reid technique, which is illegal in some counties and has NO evidence to support its validity and in fact results many times in false convictions and false confessions after police assume guilt and manipulate people into a false confession from exhaustion after 24 hour interrogations. It’s illegal in some countries outside of the United States, and a lot of organizations have been sued in the USA over it. The American civil liberties union has called for its use to be stopped. Everyone is different, you have no idea what he’s innocent or guilty of. He’s a Vietnam veteran talking of traumatic experiences. Some people act like he does while talking abojt traumatic things and seem unconcerned or casual , who smile etc. I do that when under pressure or when anxious, like when told horrible news I tend to laugh and smile in reaction out of my cptsd and anxiety although it’s just shock and inability to process, I’m actually devastated . Not everyone is you and you’re full of yourself if you think you can tell that about anyone. Even police who are trained have been shown to be no better than detecting lies than untrained citizens, because there is no way to tell by body language. People have gotten away with lying to you a lot bro.

His body like his body language is the same when talking about his friends dying and the worst thing he’s ever seen , the same as every other part of the interview. You can’t say that he’s being dishonest . You don’t even know his baseline body language to compare anything to bro. In my opinion he looks honest, so clearly it’s not cut and dry

The villagers lived under constant intimidation and fear of the VC. If they sided with the Americans they were tortured and murdered for it when the Americans left their village.

There's no civilians in a situation like that, they should be long gone to return when it's over. Simply saying 'no VC' isn't going to cut it when there's tunnels and its clearly a hotbed. Shooting at soldiers then hiding the gun makes you complicit in making the risks to villagers greatly increase. How is everyone a civilian when there's still casualties as you enter and as many as you LEAVE the village? It's too easy, years later, to declare that there was only civilian casualties.

I don't think Mr Hill was hiding anything. The body language I see is of a man of strength, having to recount dire straits combat situations. Jack makes me proud to be a Marine. If the interviewer wants to ask tough questions, ask the mfrs that sent those young men over there in the first place. No win situation that it was. Politicians bear in mind the responsibility for that debacle. But they're never "interviewed"... The amazing thing about Jack Hill is that he survived vietnam in AT ALL! When the Chinese invade the West coast, civilians will be begging for Jack Hills to save them. We're gonna say, f u.
