A short video describing the February 2022 Bee Culture Article I wrote on Transitional Beekeeping. In the video and in the article, a short discussion of old-styled box hives and an explanation of an old, simple method of beelining performed by children many years ago. For an extra "freebie" discussion, a method used by the children for "lining" turkey hens for egg gathering is also included.

I liked seeing the cover pic and other pics like it when you show pics of the colonies spread out in foresty tree areas. Hope to see more of it. It looks beautiful.

Thanks for the video. I recently got my brother into beekeeping and made him one of my "cadillac" beehives. I told him this is the best made hive you'll find in New England, but there are people all over the world that keep bees successfully in boxes of pallet wood tacked together. We are very blessed to live in a country where we put so much effort into the coating, joints, and handles, or the contraptions and tools. Elsewhere they work bees barefoot with nothing but a machete. Hope you share some of those pics of your old boxes!!!

Thanks Jim. Lining a wild hives has had my interest since I got my first hive from a feral swarm.

It would be interesting to compare overwintering survival rates with smaller improvised boxes where the bees choose the comb orientation with modern non-improvised commercial structured colonies and the differences between those rates of which live and which die.
