Yes I love The Project!!! I’m a huge Courtney Summers fan and have been since I was in middle school. I thought it was such a harrowing and haunting look into a sister relationship destroyed by someone with way too much power.
You can absolutely zoom out a bit and show off your collection!! It's a nice vibe to see them all on the shelves. (Now I'll finish watching the video xD)
I totally understand your rating for Charlie Vega. I gave it 5 tars because I can totally relate to Charlie so it hit home. Also I liked her result of her relationship with her mom because sad to say, mine was also never resolved which made it more realistic personally. Its a very subject book
Yeahhh What Big Teeth sucked haha. Also, any time I watch anything having to do with cults with my husband he is always like, "Well, I mean, they had some good points" because he's so nice and wants to find the good in everyone and I'm like "YOU WOULD 100% JOIN A CULT I JUST KNOW IT."
Your Furby collection is giving me flashbacks to having one as a kid in the 90s and the time I helped my cousin bury hers in the backyard because it kept talking to her in the middle of the night.
Your thumbnails are so beautiful and creative! Also, i like the "zoomness" of your camera, but maybe if it's pointed straight at the bookshelf would be also nice. But anyway, returning to the video now.
That’s too bad What Big Teeth was a complete bust for you. I absolutely loved it. Mainly because I am obsessed with dark horror and fantasy elements. Their writing style reminded a lot of Angela Carter’s story. I loved the elements of subtle creature feature horror with the fancy grandma and the fact that the whole family line of werewolves didn’t come from anything but the need to survive and fight back against the monster wanting to eat them (also I liked how obviously homophobic the monster was while being surrounded very fluid and nonconforming family of werewolves; I thought that it was wonderfully woven into the story). I also loved the chapters with Persephone’s ghost and to be honest, I think this novel would’ve greatly benefitted from being from more of her perspective. I recognize it’s faults, but it was totally my type of novel in terms of feminism, horror, and fantasy retellings.
I read cannibalism a few years ago. I did a couple years of non fiction. I liked it, but I like science type books. I feel the same about YA. lets just say it is physically possible I could have birthed someone your age. A lot of booktubers are way younger and what you care about and want to read is totally different than when you are 20. I still watch, mainly to hear recommendations. I enjoy your honesty.
On the topic of cults, did you watch Wild Wild Country on Netflix? I was totally sucked in to that documentary and I was amazed that I never heard about a huge cult that literally built a city that included a fucking working airport in the middle of Oregon. And I really don't know how I feel about that "cult" in particular after having finished it, I recommend it if you're interested in the process of how a cult begins and functions in a day to day way.
I loved hearing you talk about the project. Because I was worried about reading it but the reviews were making me not want to read it but I got it from my library so I’m excited! 😊
Ok wow, that poem got me emotional. I’m normally not a poetry reader, but I’m going to pick this one up. I also read and disliked What Big Teeth, and I loved The Project! I am around the same age as you so I totally get what you mean with feeling distanced from YA now. Unless there’s murder or demonic possession involved lol. Anyway, your Furbys look so cute and happy in the background! 😍
You should read The Ash Family by Molly Dektar! It’s one of my favorite fictional books that deals with a cult because it deals with it in a different way than I’ve encountered. It’s a pretty polarizing read and doesn’t have the best ratings so you may end up hating it but I think it’s worth a read anyway
I am having the same experience as a 32 year old in regards to YA. I am a middle school teacher so I am still involved in the community but not so much as a personal reader, but as a teacher finding materials for my students.
