Today we bring out some of the Federal Shorty 4 Buck Shotshells and put them to the test to see what they can really do. We tested them at close range, long range, across the chronograph, and through some water jugs out of a Remington 11-87. Will these shells be legit performers, or will they just be a gimmick? Stick around and find out!
You can send stuff to the channel! (please no handloaded or reloaded ammo, factory ammo is fine *DO NOT SEND AMMO VIA USPS! USE UPS OR FEDEX ONLY*)

These work great in a 590S shockwave. 8+1 capacity, almost no recoil, and I am certain that these 15 pellet federal loads still retain most of that 'one shot stop' ability as the standard size 12 gauge shells.

Yeah, I bet they would be pretty effective if you ever had to use them for a defensive purpose. I definitely wouldn't want to be hit by one that's for sure

I like to use those in my single shot. Keep it by the door for whatever gets in the chicken house LOL

I know they aint as good as your 3inch but i can fit 8 mini slugs in my shockwave and i sleep like a baby knowing its under my bed locked and loaded

As long as they cycle reliably, then they are a good choice for a bedside rig for sure

They would definitely do the trick on some groundhogs! I've got plans to go put this week and do some dove hunting too, so maybe I should film some of it for yall

@tjhunt740 I'll see what I can do as far as cameras go since it may be a little more tricky to film. I wish I had a cameraman, but we ain't got the budget for that yet haha

Minishells came into popularity when we started selling our OPSol Flex Adapter for Mossbergs...that was 2015. In 2017, Mossberg introduced the Shockwave with our adapter. In 2018, Challenger started producing minis. In 2019, Federal started making minis. The mini buck shorty is buffered, and my tests at 8 yards from a Shockwave pattern a little wider than your test, but still tight. The slug is very accurate, even past 70 yards (youtubers elsewhere show this). We have a friend, Dan the Man, that has made 12 and 20g minis that are pretty stout. Federal also makes a 6 00 buck mini. Nice video, and conclusions, IMO, are accurate. 15 #4 buck hitting at 1100 fps is roughly like 15 22s hitting.

I don't know if they would be my first choice for a defensive loading, but they would absolutely do the job if that's what you had

@@matttyreeoutdoors correct. For you and me, no. But for a lot of people, it makes for a platform where they have 2 hands on the gun, and aren't timid. As one person said to me, after shooting for the first time about 40 rounds...it is empowering.

Ballistic Products makes a shortshell wad. If you cut just the star crimp area off a used shell, you have the perfect length of shell to make a shortshell and do a roll crimp. The shortshell will cycle reliably in most pump shottys without jamming up or using a Mossberg + Opsol. The shortshell is longer than the minishell. Shortshell of sufficient length will cycle thru most pumps.
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors 5 месяцев назад
I'll have to try that whenever I start reloading some shells

Good video. I believe the shorty shells produce a wider pattern than traditional shells due to the longer distance the projectiles travel in the barrel before hitting the forcing cone which causes the disruption 🤷‍♂️
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors 7 месяцев назад
That's definitely a possibility. Even the way they load the shells is probably a little different since they are so small. They just don't have a ton of room to add a bunch of extra buffer or a wad or anything like that

@curtiseggemeyer5681 5 месяцев назад
I am curious , as far as making some perhaps roll crimping them or using a different set up to fold crimp , I would think a fairly fast powder would be a good choice like 700X Green Dot etc. Your video results are way above what I expected and I like using #4 buck at 24 caliper it is definitely a winner. P.S. you videos are 5 star the way you present yourself and your set up.

Thanks! I'm not a handloader, but it's definitely something I would like to get into. Making my own shorty shells is definitely gonna be something I try, so we'll see how well they do when that time comes

No they did not. The gun ejected the shell, but would not feed the next. It isn't really surprising for a shell like this though

You might get better velocity trough a pump or single shot. Your loosing gas to cycle the bolt I'm thinking.
