He would have been one of the best in history, but had to share his era with two alien beasts on that surface like Nadal and Djokovic. Only their inhuman level playing on clay diminished the excellent performances Roger was capable to offer.

Roger was at a level that should have won the French Open for five years from 2005-2009. Novak was at a level where he should have won as well for six years from 2011-2016. But there was Rafa, and before Novak there was Prime Rafa, Roger in God Mode, and Wawrinka in Beast Mode. In different eras, they were both so good and consistent that they should have won five and six in a row.

@niklFIT
@niklFIT 2 года назад
@@invictus9022 I dont know what you consider "bad", or if you just judge Federer by his 35yo end of carrer, but Federer lost 4 finals to Nadal, so if there wasnt for Nadal, Federer would have 5 French open titles, 7 if we count his losses to Nadal in semifinal or earlier. Djokovic lost 3 finals to Nadal. So based On French open results Federer would be #2 clay player in the world. But of course if you judge Federer by his post 2012 results where he got overshadowed by Djokovic to whom he has lost like 2 grandslam matches each year, then yeah Federer didnt do much on clay in his 30s.

I really think Del Potro could have been the next world number one if he didn't get injured in 2010. The history books would be so much different. I really thought he was going to be better than murray and djokovic due to his ability to hit big off both sides. He also had great movement.

This was the match that helped DelPo believe he could beat Federer. He had never taken a set off Fed prior this match. For the first time against Fed, he used his FH as a consistent weapon to boss rallies, and I don't think Fed was expecting the pace coming from that side, as he was getting rushed and pushed back a lot.

Roger was on pins & needles the whole 2nd week of this tournament after Nadal lost... he got past Tommy Haas only by a whisker, and had a similar close call in this match with Delpotro playing at such a high level. This is one of the very best clay court matches ever, especially for those spectators who generally prefer grass or hard court surfaces because even though they like a hard struck ball and good rallies, they don't want to see every point go 10-25 shots which is typical on clay. Because of the amazing talent of these guys, both at their peak I would say, this match has everything. Don't understand why this match is not featured more as a classic. It is truly an awesome match. I knew Del Potro was fabulous at his peak, especially when he beat Fed at the 2009 U.S. Open but I had no idea Roger could really play this well on clay. This match deserves more publicity. I got to see Del Po live in Cincy in 2013 but while his forehand was still awesome, he clearly wasn't quite at the level he was pre-injury, especially on the backhand side. I was really impressed to see how well Roger could hit hard when he needed to and his creativity and strategizing because at this point you could not outhit Del Po, you could outplay him maybe with smarts and all the talent in the world and that's what Fed had.

Federer is so BIG that I believe even argentinians wanted him to win that day, nothing against Delpo but that was Federer only chance to get the Carrer Slam. Would be a tragedy of the sport if he didnt get it

You are right. I'm argentine but this was the big chance for Roger. Months later Delpo was rewarded.

Absolutely. Even Delpo wanted him to win it. It was his idol. And you can tell by their encounter at the net at the end of the match how Delpo appreciates Roger.

@@pomerlain8924 it was an incredible match for sure but to say delpo was better for the first three sets is a lie. He was better in the first and third but they were completely equal in the second. Federer was lucky to win that second set for sure, but not in the sense that delpo choked it was more roger taking his chances and winning the bigger points. Yes delpo could have easily won in three but in the end Roger was just a bit better on the day.

Del Potro was a fantastic talent. Shame injuries spoiled his career. This was a tough match for Federer. This was one of the hardest French Opens he had, with the exception of not playing Rafa in final.
