FedEx tinkerer custom builds no-waste micro farmstead

Ramutis "Ray" Narkevicius kept his day job with FedEx but cultivated his dream job by gardening his small Los Angeles backyard to a point of passion.
His high yield system produces fruits, veggies, eggs, & fish thanks to composting. He proved at a nearby brewery rooftop it can be scaled on a tight budget.
It all began in 1965 when he wanted fruits and vegetables that tasted better than those from the supermarket and he wanted them to grow fast and abundant. He began experimenting with making a superfood compost mix, collecting restaurant waste (later from juice bars) that he brought home to feed his ducks.
Within a few years, he was growing pounds of lettuce, strawberries, avocados, persimmons, kiwis, oranges, pomelos, grapefruits, nectarines, and his own creative hybrids. He had also cultivated street fruit trees in front of his home and had more than enough eggs to share with the neighborhood.
With plenty of sunlight, he began to focus on reusing the water by growing the plants on rock beds that filtered into recirculating tanks where he even added crawfish to clean the water, especially when the duck bath was added to the cycle.
In 2012, he took his waste-compost-gardening cycle public when he answered an ad from Angel City Brewery offering their spent grain for free. He began to add this to his home mix and when he noticed the brewery’s large roof was empty, he offered to start a garden. Nearly a decade later, the rooftop is flourishing with exotics like bananas, pineapples, and passion fruit, and plenty of hops for the Angel City to make a specialty Rooftop-Hop Ale.

@@CarolUndy Really you just watched a whole video about his system. Seems like you could reverse engineer it pretty easily. I've seen his method across a lot of channels but with slight alterations. It's effectively throw waste into a pile, let chickens eat what they want and mix it, chickens keep it from becoming bug infested, Eventually you get good compost. Heck I am doing a trellis system like his but for tomatos and using different material.

Bruh, I'm from Long Beach, I've traveled the country, I have literal blood DNA in New Mexico soil, in 2012 I went off grid and built a tiny home of sand bags and used tires, Today I'm working on my second build in south carolina, life kids and life drama has everyone on notice... It's good to see someone from my hood doing it at home and using what God gave... My homes are built to have year round growing, year round red wiggler worms and compost, and new idea a indoor outdoor fish pond... All harmonic incomes and practically self ran... Year round 70 degrees without heating and cooling, I don't understand why people are so dependant...

@Dorian Gray I'm in the USA. Each state has an extension office and each county has an extension office. They offer classes usually once a year. The classes are tailored to your local area. For instance the desert in Arizona is different than the Midwest where I live. The classes were once a week for 6 hours for eight weeks. There was a cost of $125(?) But that was about 15 years ago. When the class is done you volunteer at the office taking calls or adopt a piece of lawn/flower beds at government owned land like your township building, or work at the booth at the county fair, etc. There are alot of different things you can do. I think the classes are probably online now. I learned alot and it wasn't hard. We had 2 full notebooks and a weekly take home test. The speakers were different each week and each were experts. I learned alot about the difference between dirt and soil.😊

Endless food supply from the knowledge of farming this way. Every section of highway in Los Angeles has hundreds of acres alongside the barrier which is watered with grey water and grows ground cover mostly. What if sections of this were used for this type of gardening? Thousands of jobs created immediately. Also we have 52 miles of River that has been boxed in by concrete and is fed by Runoff from the Mountains and Rain water... which now shoots straight into the ocean... but with hundreds of catchment basins could turn the whole 52 miles into garden.

I grew up south of LA in northern San Diego co. and I used to collect and attempt to rais mosquito fish which was easy as they are a north american guppy. Not like the fancy south american versions. But I also did something that was said to be not possible and that was to get stickleback fish to reproduce in captivity. And duck eggs, how I miss them! Grew bananas by the pool. When my parents got divorced, we had to cut back on expenses so no more chlorine for the pool. So, I modified the filter intake and got my mom to let me turn it into a fish pond. After all, with no chlorine, oarsmen water bugs, water beetles, and mosquito larve abounded, until I filled the pool with fish and gravel in the bottom with aquatic plants and used the water to water the gardens in the backyard. And everything flourished! Now, I am in northern missouri and trying to bring what I learned in california out here and turn this little 1/4 acre into a super producer like it is 1-5 acres and am slowly getting there. The soil is clay so a lot of organic chunky materials had to be brought in to compost and add to the soil. Someday, I will have a larger greenhouse so I can grow oranges and avocados and cinnimon! And, raise my own version of food fish. Ray, you keep doing what you are doing and you should have your own youtube channel and share what your experiments are doing, what works and what does not. Because california needs more folks like you, especially during these exceptional droughts.

I watch a ton of gardening/ farming videos and this man is a humble genius. Time to call some local breweries and ask for their leftovers. Wow, the citrus is insane!

If everyone did this on their rooftops This would be a great way to add more oxygen in the air and would help clear up the air better in LA maybe eliminate some Smog so you guys can have some cleaner air to breathe, would definitely be better for the environment! I'm digging this! Great idea!

Too much work. People would rather become a couch potato than grow vegetables. So many of the leftists I know would never grow anything because they can just buy processed food at the stores for expensive prices then cry online about saving the planet.

One can't do this on every roof, because some buildings aren't constructed to handle more than a certain amount of weight per square foot, BUT if one has a building/roof rated to sufficient weight this is a great idea. Much of this is being done at ground level, which is definitely workable in many residential yards. One could even construct a system that is attractive from the outside, depending on the size of a person's yard.

The sad part is that many would consider his garden/ecosystem messy and a blight. What he has done in a small area is genius and he has done it economically. Reminds me of the old Italian gardeners where I grew up. He said he started in the late 60's so he is probably in his early to mid 70s. I hope he has someone to pass this on to, someone who will carry this on. I would hate to see his work destroyed by somone missing the genius of it and tearing it all out in the name of "gentrification".

Messy and a blight! Indeed! The aerial view showed an older mixed use neighborhood with some light industrial nearby. The ground under the olive tree appeared as dead lawn/weeds. Immensely practical inner city industrial farm/garden delivers his goal of better tasting food, a joy. Nothing pretty about it except utility. The operation could never exist in a suburban setting of $800k homes where the manicured front yards are for the neighbors to look at so they can be re-assured. The man is a mechanic, not a decorator. He is the nuts n bolts food man, with the good shit. Bravo..

Sure but as a designer who makes functional things pretty, i can see how it could be mainstramed. His hydroponics with shellfish was great. Recycling every bit of water. Makes enough fertilizer for his yard, his 2 sidewalks, the neighbourghood AND the rooftop. So for his own needs he could actually cut back and have a show flowergarden if need be ;) i love his mess. He’s taken into accound moquitoes, cleans his animal that look absolutely healthy, provides shade.

I love how this Urban Gardener is adapting to Climate Change in real time. He is creating delicious nutrient rich food and amazing soil through composting. His water use and conservation is next level brilliant. People would pay good money for the luscious fruit he is growing. I would love to spend a few days puttering around with him and bombarding him with questions that he may or may not answer because he is too busy getting his hands dirty working on these amazing systems.

Outstanding, very inspiring. I love at the end of the film, you ask if it is his mission to change urban agriculture, his answer is a bit woolly. He’s just doing it, not trying to change anyone’s mind, not pretending to influence people, just showing us what can be done. Great film, thank you 🙏

I love this!.....I am always impressed when seeing what people like this can envision and create. We need (and are definitely going to need) so much more of this in the world....Especially in our "urban" areas. A little voice in my head is saying that many people are probably not going to find this to be very "pretty to look at"..... But, what seems more important to me is that we have a world to "fix" and "save". Lifestyles are going to be forced to change. And when lots more people put their genius and creativity into these kinds of efforts, the aesthetics' will probably take care of themselves. Thanks for posting this....

There is much to learn from his years of experimentation. Urban farming can go a long way with making connections with small local businesses for raw composting materials. You find these gems and share them with us to my continued amazement, Ms Dickerson! Thank you! Am sharing with Facebook group, Agriculture for Climate Change members this time.
