You also had flour and could make some pancakes. I also love that you are making your own bread, so good and good for you. And you bought the butter with your budget!-so many people just call that a pantry staple, but at almost $4 a pound you have to count it!

Thank you, that’s a great idea! It’s so disappointing how expensive butter is- I really hope prices can come back down. I know Aldi has good deals on butter during the holidays, so if you have one near you check it out. Merry Christmas 🎄

I make pasta sauce from tomato paste and water. Just add a few herbs, maybe some garlic if you want. Much cheaper and easier to carry and store tomato paste cans than big jars of pasta sauce. I also make tomato soup from tomato paste the same way. Add water and maybe some basil. Some tomato paste has garlic and Italian herbs already added.

Great ideas, I picked up quite a few tips. I'm on an extremely tight budget so I buy russet potatoes, 5lbs for $2.65. I make fried potatoes an onions, or to put in soups or casseroles. Also cabbage is cheap & goes a long way. Meats are so expensive now so I mainly stick with chicken quarters, I believe its 10lbs for under $9. I smoke or bake them, to use in chicken salad, or chicken quesadillas.

I've been loving all these channels RU-vid is suggesting with budget meals/shopping tips. I'm just feeding my husband and I for now, but we have a little one on the way in February and money is extremely tight for us right now. It means the world to know that we're not the only ones who are struggling and that there's such a community of support out there

Thanks for a lot of good ideas! A small tip for the bread: You can skip the plastic and the extra oil by wetting a clean dish towel and wring it out, then drape it across your bowl or bread pan when you're setting your dough away to rise. The wet towel keeps the dough from drying out while helping to create the damp and warm conditions that are ideal for the dough to rise.
@user03anon64
@user03anon64 Год назад
If you want to help your bread, don't put the sugar in with the yeast and flour. The best method is to only put a little bit of the flour and the yeast together separately, let it rest, and after that put everything together. Yeast needs water to grow and the sugar competes with it for that exact water. Also, before letting it rest, you can fold it like a book twice and then form it into a bowl, it will help it rise. I know it's a little specific and I hope I didn't bother you.

Another inexpensive, filling and nutritious dinner is ground beef (or boston mix) seasoned with seasoned salt (lawreys), lots of onion, and lots of cabbage with 1 apple. Cook the beef with salt and pepper and drain off fat. Stir in seasoned salt and 1 copped onion. Cook until onions are softened, add about 1/2 chopped cabbage and 1 peeled and cored apple. A pinch of red pepper flakes if you like. Cover and cook until cabbage is wilted. So yum! Porportions of all ingredients can be based on however much you have. You can also add a potato. Add olive oil if you need more fat in the dish.

Kudos for pretty much counting everything. Many/most don't count oils, butter, seasonings, things like flour sometimes, a bit of milk, etc. Butter and eggs alone are over $10 these days for most people so when some cooks don't count it, it truly isn't sticking to a low budget. Sausage these days is my favorite protein. I don't care if it is Italian sausage links, hot or regular, andouille ring sausage or breakfast sausage, etc. I probably would have mixed it up and added some sausage to the beans for instance or maybe on one occasion anyhow. But it is all just a jumping off point/ideas to customize our own way. Rice and beans truly are stereotypical and what most go to in any budget challenge. I get it but it gets a bit dull just like people who think chicken is the go to protein whether budget or weekly meals. This is the first video I have seen of yours so I don't know if you are sticking to budget meals or doing a bit of other too. But it was spot on and counting almost all $$ and ingredients.

Just a couple of tips that I use… I buy tomato bullion for rice and a small can of peas n carrots to it. I also save the bean water and freeze or can it for soup base. I know this will sound odd but sometimes I just heat the broth n drink it. My Dr said it’s full of iron and protein as well as seasonings.

I don’t eat meat, so I’d use the cost of that sausage & buy some frozen vegetables (spinach or edamame or broccoli) I’m subscribing because you are pleasant to listen to, have some wonderful delicious ideas & are “real” 😀 Hello from Australia 🇦🇺👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

Tipp: sulk your beens 12-24h bevor cooking. They will be healthier and need less time (9min). Prepare the hole package (less energieexpense). Don't salt the beens bevor cooking. The result is healthier und faster prepared. You can take the rice into a smaler pot and set the small pot into the instante pot. so both (beans and rice) can be prepared in one go.

A couple more budget friendly meals. American goulash, 1can diced tomatoes, 1box macaroni, one can tomato juice 1 lb burger or ground turkey Seasonings to taste, garlic, onion, Italian Seasoning, paprika. Day 2 Add chili beans and chili Seasonings for chili mac. Meal two, 1 can tuna, one box macaroni and cheese, one can cream of mushroom soup, 1 can peas, cook mac and cheese per box, mix in drained tuna, soup, and peas, season to taste garlic, onion, pepper, ect for a kick add old bay if you have it. New England boiled dinner, bean soup, ham and potato soup. I like smoked pork hocks in my boiled dinner but any smoked pork meat will work. Add burger to the cabbage soup diet soup or just eat the soup without meat my family love it for the flavor you can also add smoked meat ie kielbasa, ham ect. I hope these recipes help people out. Also a lot of communities offer meals on wheels for people who can't get out to shop or can't cook for themselves. You had sausage, you could have reserved half and made sausage gravy, you also had all the ingredients for biscuits. If you are unsure how to make the gravy you can pick up a cheap package of gravy mix at Walmart .
