It's so well coordinated that I'm starting to think that the voice of Audrey ii is also the puppeteer. Usually it's a 2 man job, but this.. this has to be just one guy. Either way, I'm totally blown away.
I'm actually part of a show that covers this. there's usually multiple people in the plant, for the voice and the different movements. we have 3, the vines, the mouth, and the voice. the leaves are usually switched to when the vines aren't moving.
Looking at that I just put together that they’re the puppeteers feet. You can see his knees and feet once you look at it hard but it’s amazing! They truly transformed him into a plant.
@@DodgeThisBamI just watched a video today called “Audrey II puppet guide”, where the creator of the puppets shows how each of the 4 pod plants work. It’s made for theatre companies to use but it’s really cool to see how they work. I recommend watching it!
The Plant and the Voice are fantastic. But I don't know how much of this Seymour I could sit through without offering myself as a sacrifice to Audrey II
This is hands down the best puppetry for Audrey II I have ever seen thus far!!!! Whoever is doing it gives the plant so much character and actually made me believe that it was ALIVE!!! Every movement of the head and roots are amazing and when the plant tapped his roots to the beat of the music, I was dying of laughter. If anyone ever does this show and becomes the puppeteer or the voice of Audrey, they need to see this video.
I dont know what´s better, the Puppeteer, The design of the puppet itself, the voice of the plant and how the acting of the plants goes so well with this Seymour, Amazing
Actually, the puppet design itself in this particular form is harder to work with than the solid puppets. The floppy ones, like this one, generally are more difficult to deal with because you need to evenly distribute your arm and find a way to keep hold and have so many subtle nuances to make it work properly. However, most solid ones have two rods you hold onto which makes the weight distributed and make the movement easier to handle. So, I'd say this particular puppet design doesn't work as well. What REALLY makes it is the puppeteer because they can handle such a puppet SO WELL. Because they had all the subtleties, so much personality, so much movement. And the voice actor REALLY DID bring so much to the table. It's just wonderful.
If he's looking for fresh blood, he could visit a local butcher shop, or, failing that, a slaughterhouse. I'd imagine they'd sell him buckets of blood. It would be profit they could make from something they'd likely otherwise wash away for free anyway. Audrey 2 never answers if it has to be human.
My version of the plant voice is just like this, but the puppeteer is extremely good. To open and close the mouth that fast and that often means it must have been a very light plant puppet or the guy operating it was an Olympic endurance runner that happened to also participate in the weight lifting events.
It has to be the puppeteer that made it work. Because this puppet is inheritely floppy. So, to make it work, you need a puppeteer that has an understanding of how regular puppetry works, then they have to be able to blow it up ten times the size.
Yes! It is possible. We can build one for you...but it is pricey to own one. Can you imagine that this very plant from 7 months ago was built in 2002? They last a lifetime with proper care.
Thank you for this amazing puppetry of our Audrey II plant #3! The designer of this very plant, Dennis Lancaster, knows what he is doing. We enjoy renting 4 full sets all over the nation for almost 20 years now. They are lightweight, lifelike and flexible which sets them apart from any others for rent. And they still look this good! Bravo to the puppeteer!
Do you guys have a full video of this show I just really wanna see more of these puppets. I am making a few puppets myself and this is way better than what I could’ve done
Lots of fun, fresh bits here, but my favorites are Audrey II's uncontrollable tremor of anticipation at around 2:10, and the unexpected root tapping its 'foot' in time to the music when Seymour starts singing at around 4:20. Hilarious!
The laughter at 2:52 is so natural and well-synced too. The audience's astonishment is audible. The plant operator/s and voice have really put in the work in rehearsals.
Ironically this Semour seems a bit too over the top. It's ok on its own for a comical character, but not really fitting his usual personality. Usually you can see the dilemma and turmoil he goes through, but in this version he's trying to capture too much of his goofy side, one more fitting for Anything Goes or something. At least Audrey II is still as delightfully evil as we can hope for her with her charisma and energy.
WOW!!!! that end was AWESOME. I'm convinced that guy doing the voice is in the puppet, at least during this point of the play. I could be wrong though.
My god, Seymour is APPALLING. STEALING FOCUS. Making every line a LINE. But, the puppeteer is phenomenal. The Voice Of The Plant is also great (they’re two different people). I was TVOTP myself once, regionally, and the puppeteer (the original Off-B’way puppeteer) and I spent HOURS on coordination. I had to lock in my vocals pretty quick and sing them exactly the same at every performance. He was incredibly sensitive, very musical, was very good at nuance and following riffs. He was also an amazing athlete with, for a tall, in shape guy, ginormous arms.
y’all out here talking about the puppet design and the voice and seymour, but can we just appreciate the most beautiful riff for “i need blood and he’s got more than enough” near the end.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to heck with over acting!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought the expressions seymor showed were awesome! and to the person who did the voice of audrey 2!!!!! Kudos to you sir!!!!!!!!!!!!! you sounded just like the one in the movies :D it was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am the Audrey 2 puppeteer for my school musical this year and I have been watching videos to study movements. This is easily the best one I have ever seen!
Ooh, clever puppet and puppeteering! Looks like he's sitting with his legs being the roots, so I'd guess that he uses his whole arm/arms to move the mouth up and down. Puppeteer head is in the top of the puppet and just naturally holds up the top part of the mouth, so really they only need to control the bottom mouth of the plant. Boy that's a lot of arm movement though. It's got to be exhausting.
I love how in synk the voice actor and puppet is. That extra step made this look so much better . The design of the puppet being a light fabric peice allows more freedom of movment and better puppetry.
I just did a Production of little shop of with this puppet, rented from the same place, I absolutely love this puppet, it works so well. Honestly the current off broadway plant is probably at the same level, I would argue worse than this one for me (but the current ones tentacles are REALLY cool but the legs on this one) Maybe it’s bias but the current off-bway plant is honestly so lame compared to this. There’s so much life that they can bring to this plant. I was a tech on our production so i set this plant every day and yeah plant #4 looked sorta weird BUT number 2 and 3 were insane. I love those puppets so much and every time I see this video I will be reminded of our amazing production of little shop.
We did this musical with my amateur drama group. The guy doing the voice of Audrey 2 was stood behind the black curtains at the back of the stage and another guy operated plant 3 and 4. The actor playing Seymore operates the hand puppet in Ya never know and the same guy operating the big plants is under the table. We all got a fly trap after the show. I'm getting 3 fly traps cos you need them in the country side 😂
Fabulous, characterful Audrey, dreadful, overacting, tone deaf Seymour. He cannot seem to straighten his legs and body, adopt a normal posture, or move in a normal way. Very annoying to watch.
i will admit this is amazing puppertry. and ispeak as ive seen a performance back in 2014 of this. when i could work out where the 10th person was it wasnt untill the end when they popped out from the curtians and took ther bow. was such a realistic performance
Is it being puppeteered from underneath the stage? The size of the pot and its position says a lot. Like "We put the plant here and it's ready to be manipulated from under the stage." Maybe it's raised a bit but a dark curtain hides the puppeteer/s
@@hammdogporkington3058 When we did this at my high school, that's how we handled this puppet with a professional puppeteer. This version was 100x better though
no offense but although the acting was really good I personally just didn't like how the plant looked. Its just my opinion but I dont think it looks like how the Audrey 2 looks in the movies and other plays
Just so you know, we created this plant to have a unique look on purpose, and have received many compliments. Everyone has their own ideas and that's okay.
In the past year, which was my senior year of High School, we put on our own production of Little Shop of Horrors using that exact same puppet. It must have been from the same prop rental place lol 😂. I was the voice of the plant, aka “the Doowop Gardner”. It was a fabulous show and one that I will miss to pieces 😊.
I dont understand why people are complaining or hating on this Seymour being "too animated" or "over the top" when in fact this is how Seymour would actually act like, perfectly within character and also it's A MUSICAL!!! ABOUT A MAN EATING PLANT!!! let them have fun with it.
