I've read several accounts of how Mike Campbell & Tom spent a considerable amount of time on determining how they should play this song. They listened to the original Byrd's song numerous times and worked out the guitar parts, and the guitars they wanted to use. Tom was clearly a musical prodigy in many ways and he is missed greatly. RIP Tom.....

In his last public appearance apart from the 40th anniversary tour, receiving an award from Musicares he commented that the people whom he revered came into his life, in his words, showed up, and the 1st one through the door was Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. I remember McGwinn interviewed in the Peter Bogdanovich bio Runnnin Down a Dream given a copy of early Heartbreakers and saying, when did I write this? Answer; you didn't write this. … I know but when did I write this? Later on there is priceless footage of Tom having a truth attack confronting 2 'suits' who were trying to fit Roger Mcguinn into some weirdly inappropriate box and Tom going ballistic .. leading to the collaboration between the two men, King of the Hill that was their reaction to the story of John Philips of the Mamas and Papas. My heart breaks when I think of how many people miss Tom. In my opinion an excellent cover can go one of two ways; either you put the 1st version aside, put your heart and soul into your own version and leave it behind or 2. you manage to absolutely capture the spirit of version one and of course here Tom does both. Most comments about his music are moving personal testaments or great observations; only one (pretty good for the internet) thoroughly annoyed me when someone or other wrote that Tom was a miniature Dylan. What rock was the writer living under??? Never mind. Also loved cover for John Sebastian's Oh, The Stories we could Tell, Hank Williams' The Lost Highway, where he deliberately did adopt the same sound and van Morrison's Your Mystic Eyes which I saw live and he OWNED that song it still gives me shivers.

Pure Petty GOLD. This album hit when I was a high school senior. I was one of those weird guys in 1989 who already owned Byrds records (me and my friends also went to a McCartney concert at Texas Stadium that year...that pretty much tells the tale of me😁), so when Petty did a version of this song I was PUMPED. Whenever I hear Tom covering this one, the first picture that comes to mind is Gene, and Roger doing this on that old go go TV show. I try to block the little fat guy playing guitar, and Gene settling for the tambourine. I guess it doesn't really matter much, since the instruments are from the studio track, but the vocals are actually live in 1965. The 1978 version McGuinn, Clark & Hillman did of this tune is surprisingly very nice. I had always heard Gene was beginning to slip by then, but I really love that version, and especially Gene's vocals, with a guitar and no tambourine.

I guess it's true that you don't appreciate someone until they're gone. When I was in high school Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were on MTV with "Don't come around here no more" every hour. I came to hate that song and had a dislike for the band. As I got older I heard more of their "albums" and found I liked a lot of what they did. I ever regret never seeing them live all the times they came to the Cleveland area. Learn from my mistakes people; Go to the concerts you want to even by yourself if needed. We are only here for a short time and you only get one chance at this. He was so humble, and so good. What a talent, what a loss. If you get a chance, check out the Foo Fighters tribute to Tom in Cincinnati. Gets me every time.

For me, it's the outstanding lyrical quality; so different from the swaggering rock and roll of its age. He will "probably" feel a whole lot better. "The reason why? Well, I can't say..." All of the uncertainty embedded in those lines. Gene Clark was a fine fine lyricist.
