I just met a HUGE personal goal: I published my first middle-grade fiction book. So, why in the world am I feeling so down? In this casual chat, I'll unpack that-and exactly what I'm doing to counteract it in an effort to turn my mood around. If you're struggling, too, I hope this honest look at my own challenge-and potential antidote-helps you, too.

Hi there! I care, and you matter. I'm Shannon, and I'm a former classroom teacher, current writer, and passionate analog advocate. (I love all things paper and pen-related!) I live in the Pacific Northwest, where I work inside a cozy closet with my many cats, including an ample Tortie named Ginger, who thinks she owns the place. (She’s not wrong.)

Congrats on the "Super-Proofed Sourdough Rolls" success! And what a brilliant idea about buying cheap books you can mark up to analyze what elements make you like a book, and what elements turn you off. What a great project! It's interesting that the very last thing you said, in encouraging listeners to generate projects that interest us, "if only for a brain-break" kind of resonated with what I'd been thinking while listening to your whole chat. I waited till the end to see if you would mention it yourself, and you didn't exactly, so I don't know if you've considered this angle. It's about our brains. Not just giving our brain a break from negative thinking spirals, but learning new things is on the list of the best things you can do to prevent dementia. As you were talking I kept thinking of what a great gift of brain health you're giving yourself. I hope you're aware of that and I salute you! And you've also inspired me to persevere with a "new learning" project I thought about doing but haven't made any real progress with. For the sake of my brain health, I thank you 🤓

And I thank *you* for the encouragement! It's so incredibly easy to dismiss my own projects and passions as "selfish" or not necessary. 😞 I *must* reduce stress (and overall cortisol levels in my body). And because the stressors aren't going anywhere (and are actually growing and multiplying), I'm trying to make changes where and how I can - including prioritizing my own projects. In fact, these "casual conversation" videos are a specific way for me to remain accountable. If we don't prioritize ourselves, no one else will, right? I'm *so* glad you're picking up a personal project again, too! Let's hope we *both* reap positive results from our efforts - including more daily doses of joy, too! ❤️
