Fela Kuti on Colonial mentality

Fela Kuti interview subtitled. I made this edit for my high school students in Los Angeles. I subtitled the video so that they would clearly understand what he is saying. I first heard Fela as a young teenager and learned a lot from his songs. In this song Fela is being Sarcastic of the Democracy (new Christianity) which Europeans (U.S.A) use to justify their continued colonialism just as they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also changed the word F--- and narrowed the image as to not show the cigarette so that I can show it in school. Thank you for all you comments

+Mossogbe Camara The shame lies with the white man! That's coming from a white man. I now have to carry the burden of the atrocities my ancestros created then and now. We are lost in a slimey greasy pit of money and greed :-( Enjoy your pride for we have lost ours. Viva Fela Kuti est ces chansons!

I did the subtitles origivally for U.S. highschool age students. Many have a hard time understanding the dialect and that is the reason why they are not literal and the reason that I changed the word f--k to freak. One has to sometimes follow the rules in order to break them.

Yoruba, Pidgin etc are languages. Dialect is the term used by the coloniser as our language is inferior to them. We are a nation and when they invaded without an invitation they claimed that they discovered us as if we never existed before. Fela was definitely ahead of his time.

People are so dumb, he explained 1 of his many songs that uses a teacher-student as a metaphor comparing the colonizers from Europe and the colonized in Africa. Of course he knows that black people have a big part to play in their demise. Most of his songs criticized the Nigerian government for wasting/stealing millions. Also he said that it was sad that in Nigeria it was blacks oppressing blacks even though they and every other country strongly opposed the white on black injustice of the Aparth

I could understand Fela pretty well without the subtitles. He's very fluent in it, no doubt to his forced "English schooling." Sure, his accent's thick, but I think that's because he's used to speaking in Nigerian pidgin whenever he was with Afrika 70/Egypt 80/flavor of the week.

@cattouf wen the English were in Nigeria thats when the area became "shit". They handed power to one group of people and thats one of the reasons nigeria is in the situation it is in. This same situation is what caused the Hutsi and Tutsi war, there was nothing good about imperalism. before the english was in the place called nigeria it was never "shit".

Remember, not only in American, but in Africa we were kept from our history and mentally enslaved. Nigeria was an English colony at the time of Fela's birth, so you have to view things from that perspective. But i understand your arguement.
