The humble Axe, used to be a sharp rock tied to a stick with a vine . Things have changed , let’s go see how they work now

Years ago, my grandfather had some selective logging done on the family farm. The company that did the job left anything under 10” on the selected trees. There were a few others that had to be felled to make room to fall the selected ones. Needless to say, we had a lot of firewood to process. I spent countless hours limbing with an axe, while he ran the chainsaw. There really is a right and wrong way to do it, and a truly sharp axe is a beautiful thing to work with. My personal worst felling experience was a 12” diameter hickory, felled with an estwing camp axe. Not a bad tool for limbs, but not a great fallers axe. The blisters ran deep, and took weeks to erupt. Before anyone says it wasn’t sharp…..that axe could shave hair. Was finished on a 9micron belt, then stropped to 25K diamond paste, and the finally on clean leather.

i once had a similarly bad experience with a badly made scythe, it didn't have those small handles on the side and as a result i couldn't even ride a bicycle because of the blisters

Hi Buckin' - I'm restoring my father's axe and my grandfather's axe. Both are double bit and great splitters.I don't have much opportunity to fell or buck but want them up to the task when I can. Is there an optimal angle for each side that you would recommend? One has a 34-1/2" handle. The other is 35-1/2". Sure wish I could attach pictures. If I remember right one of them is what you called a hot rod. Hope you see this. Love your videos and your take on life. I very much appreciate what you give to the community.
@D-Vinko
@D-Vinko 2 года назад
Depends on the initial bevel grind. Is it thick and bulbous, or is it skinny and slender? If the former, try aiming for a total angle of 32 to 40* (16* or 20* each side). If the latter, try aiming for a total angle of about 16* to 24* (8* or 12* each side) I find ultra sharp axes need to be re-ground, and re-honed frequently, unless they're some really wicked steel (Although even then, the damage that can occur to those types of blade edges can be more difficult to fix). Having a high quality, relatively fine pocket stone (maybe a hard arkansas) will save you a lot of time chopping. I've been sharpening for years and years, all sorts of tools; in general I don't measure my angles unless I have to; especially because I work on knives the most.

Hi Buckin'! I gotta tell ya, there's dozens of guys re-hanging axes on Y/T, and every one has to cut paper, shsve his arm, and split or chop wood when he's done. But YOU, almost alone & a couple others, truly look like you know what you're doing with one! Some of these poor yay-hoos make me cringe, looking to soon amputate body parts! Meanwhile, you "just" go about limbing trees, felling same within a gnats butt of where it's meant to drop, and knocking out the most impressive "chips" ever seen when you choose to put your powersaw in the truck! Compared to you Bro., the rest ARE pretenders! Nice vid too! For self-taught you've impressive skills there as well! Anybody new to this channel, just happening to read this - please stick around! Our host is only gettin started with his woods-manship! He's also a gifted Preacher of the value of loving our fellow man and living it daily. Welcome aboard!

Is your Helko a Tasmanian pattern? If so, it's somewhat thinner than mine. I have a Helko Tasmanian, it's tool weight is 6 1/2lbs, and it's a super special tool to me. It's great at chopping, and it also splits like a beast and doesn't stick except in the hickory I've been splitting. I can also do the pick up a piece of wood trick with it. It's been my favorite Tazi pattern thus far. Keep up the good spirit!🤘

@@jirusjirus9322 thank you. It’s tough being an only child. My mom retires in April. So I am taking care of him during the week. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. One cool thing is he just got fire stick tv so he can watch RU-vid. So he watches fishing channels. But I’m going to introduce him to buckin this week. I think he will really enjoy and appreciate his videos as he was a log sawyer and ran a wood chip plant for a paper mill and was part of the last log drive in the state of Maine where we are from. Since his severe stroke he is pretty much chair ridden. Who knows maybe I can get buckin to give him a shout out. He would get a big kick out of that lol

For some reason, I prefer to limb with an axe than the chainsaw, even if the chainsaw is faster. But I'm not on a schedule, I just cut trees to clean up the yard and limb those, then cut them up for campfires. So speed is not needed.

Good advice even if experienced. Instep protection good to have as well in case you undo your laces with the axe. Saw it happen to a co worker when i was younger. He was using improper stance felling a small tree. Felt bad as i had sharpened his axe for him. He got to meet a nice nurse though when medivaced by bush plane. Thirty stitches but a clean cut.
