The series is set during the "pinko commie" scare of the 1950s where gays were banned from government service in the US because they were considered a security risk. And, Bomer and Bailey's characters seem to be gay government workers, so I am not expecting a happy ending.

Yeah. According to the synopsis, the pair meet at the start of the 1950s red scare then the series follows them through Vietnam in the 60s, drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 70s and the two-for-one nightmare of Reagan and AIDS in the 80s. Probably not the kind of heart-warming relationship Heartstopper delivers.

Fellow Travelers is an 8-part adaptation of Thomas Mallon's fine 2007 novel. It's an extraordinary achievement for everyone involved. Showrunner Ron Nyswaner has taken the book's basic story and expanded and enriched its scope with a longer timeline and new characters and subplots. It frustrates me no end that people pre-judge a work by whether it has a happy/unhappy ending. This is popular television at its best, really complex central characters, meticulous research and recreation of past decades.

Yes, it's based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon. I'm gathering the story-telling format for this mini-series will be rather different. The novel is told mostly as a flashback to the mid/late 1950s, during and after the McCarthy hearings in the U.S. Senate, with a prologue and epilogue set in the 1980s. It's a part of U.S. history called the Red Scare (fear of Communist infiltration of the government, especially the State Department), which expanded into the Lavender Scare (fear of homosexuals in the government.) The two guys at the center of the story are Hawkins Fuller (Hawk), a Congressional liaison who works in the U.S. State Department, and a young writer and recent college graduate, Tim (Skippy) Laughlin, who has moved to Washington D.C., hoping to get a job as a speechwriter for someone in Congress. Interesting and fun fact: the novel is also the basis of a rather wonderful new American opera, premiered in 2016, with a libretto by Greg Pierce, set to music by Gregory Spears. Check it out too!

Jonathan’s character is kinda like a little “spy” for Matt’s character who’s a closeted senator’s assistant of some sort/guy on the side 🤷‍♂️. Yes, quite the TEASEr 🤭 🔥

Roy Cohen is a real person. A conservative lawyer who was friends with very right wing conservative politicians. He was also very gay. Died of AIDS is the mid 90s. His character is a big part in Angels in America. The broadway play and HBO series.

It’s based on a novel, however the novel is only set during the 50s (with the epilogue fast forwarding many years) and the show is expanding Hawk and Tim’s relationship through the 80s.
