The fact that Jonathan Bailey was filming this, Wicked, and Bridgerton simultaneously is remarkable. His talent knows no bounds. Even within this show, the range of his portrayal of Tim is phenomenal. I love the juxtaposition of past Tim constantly seeking past Hawk and now in the present, Hawk begging for Tim to give him a chance. So heartbreaking to watch.

I'm almost 74, and I watched the first 2 episodes...with difficulty. Seeing you react to this 3rd episode, I can't. I realize younger LGBTQ may not have a full understanding of our lives in the 1950s-80s, but it bears repeating that in many states in the US, and certainly in the UK as well, gay men were persecuted, prosecuted, imprisoned for as long as 10 years and 'sterilized', either through castration, vasectomy or chemically. I survived the persecution and the AIDS epidemic, God only knows how or why. It's admirable that Matt Bohm, portraying this character, is 'educating' today's LGBTQ and the general population, who may have either forgotten or have never known our reality in those years. But, I, for one, can't look at this again. It's soul wrenching. I'm married now, my husband and I are about to celebrate 28 years together. Life is wonderful now. Looking back like this is just too hard on me emotionally. I feel the fear watching this series, and I just don't want to feel that way again.

You are not alone in all that you are feeling. I’ve had hundreds reach out to me by DM or email who feel exactly the same way. Also please know that the young LGBTQ may not have a full understanding and probably never will… but we’re trying to understand ❤️

Thank you for telling your experience. I’m 40, straight, italian and know very little about this. Do you feel like how the young people is reacting to Hawk is fair? I feel like his behaviour is understandable because of when he was born and what he lived through. He has so much trauma I can’t really find him at fault for defending himself and the people he loved the only way he knew how

I binged all 8 episodes this weekend. I’m 68 and lived within the protective bubble of ignorance while I was in school, mainly bc no one was out. I do remember the McCarthy era as it related to communism. Once I started working, I went to a blood bank lecture at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, hearing that at least 10% of the population was gay. I hate to say it, but I found this statistic to be unbelievable until I started to research LGBTQ history, ashamed of being blind to what was going on in my world without being aware. When I watched this, it was with a 72yo married gay friend who experienced so much of this. Now, I have a happily married gay daughter. I have encouraged her to watch this to try and understand how different it is now. She came out to me when she was 16. She had heard stories from a gay uncle who was there at Stonewall. She was SO fortunate that, as she met the person she wanted to spend her life with, marriage became legal. She knows that she doesn’t truly grasp the horror of watching so m ashy people die and understands that she will only learn it as a history lesson. Once I dealt with it at work, I became much more involved with LGBTQ issues. Watching this is SO difficult for people who lived during this time bc we KNOW that it’s real. My thoughts go out to you. You have memories that cannot he erased. Y

I wish I didn’t cut Hawk so much slack but I can’t help but have a lot of empathy for him despite everything because I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be gay 50s-80s, and but I also wanna smack him for hurting Tim. Tim was warned twice, once by Marcus and then Hawk himself, but he still took a risk at having this relationship with Hawk. I do believe Hawk manipulates Tim to get him to do things for him (As it is seen in episode 4) but I also believe that in the road trip scene it wasn’t really manipulation, at least not with malicious intent because I feel like he genuinely wanted to spend time with Tim and make it up to him for forgetting his birthday. I wholeheartedly feel like Hawk loves Tim like Tim loves him, but Hawk is like his mother in some ways, he is guarded and if he has to pretend to be straight to have a career and avoid persecution then he will do it to get it.
@raqueldobson1

Exactly… It’s hard for Hawk with his childhood experience, persecution by his father, military life… he has lived his life to please others whilst doing what he wants in the shadows… He loved Tim from the moment he saw him, & vice versa… It’s a tragic love story…

Recommendation! The podcast “Making Gay History” is a series of interviews the host made in the late 80s of queer people telling their stories from the 1950s onward. Many of the original interviews were compiled into a book of the same name, by Eric Marcus. That book and/or the podcast will tell you SO SO MUCH. ❤❤

You said the 80s were so long ago, but when you lived through that trauma, it never feels that far away. I was one of the lucky ones, I on!y knew maybe a dozen people who died of AIDS, suicide, or addiction due to not just AIDS, but life in the closet; not dozens or hundreds like some of my friends. But the trauma of living through multiple deaths over a short period of time, the survivor's guilt, never really are buried that deep. And the loss of a generation, the lack of our stories being told, meant that the next generation of us had very few mentors, examples or guidance on how to be gay adults. That meant that many of us were not the greatest examples either, but we also became AIDS activists, gay rights and marriage equality warriors. Approaching my 60s, it amazes me to see how much a part of history in the making i've seen and been a part of. I'm humbled by the freedom of the current generation, and heartbroken by the steps backwards I witness. I struggle watching anything AIDS focused or subthemed anymore, but grateful that the whole story of our history is more and more widely accessible.

@@JackieRossLavender I can't begin to tell you how important the storytelling is in not only maintaining but furthering the freedom and privileges that have been gained. If not for the storytelling that blossomed bittersweet from the early AIDS crisis, the loss of that generation could very easily have resulted in history reverting to that clandestine myth making and tribal mythology portrayed in this series due to the absence of a generation of gay men. Keep up the wonderful and critical service you provide. Believe it or not, I doubt I'm a rarity amongst late middle-aged men for whom RU-vid is a major component of my entertainment and social media presence.

I can relate to Tim. I was in a relationship with a narcissist, you don’t realize you are being manipulated while you are in it. You almost crave it (hard to admit that now), the control they have over you is really hard to escape. Thankfully I finally did.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 10 месяцев назад
I'm so sorry that you were in an abusive relationship and I'm so happy to hear that you were able to get out of it and far away from that person. But I do not think that Hawk has displayed signs of being a narcissist. Is he slightly manipulative, absolutely. but you literally HAD to be to survive in that time. He has shown GENUINE empathy after he's hurt people... A narcissist wouldn't. Hawk may have other mental health issues, potentially. But he wouldn't be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder in current day from what we've seen of his behavior/psychology in the show.
@fearlesssfcappuccino
@fearlesssfcappuccino 10 месяцев назад
@@AnxietyRat agree with this. Echo that I'm SO glad OP was able to get away from their abusive relationship and that no one should ever have to go through that!!!! But also agree there's a stark difference between that and Hawk's actions *in the context of this time period* - the context is so important here. You can tell most if not all of Hawk's actions that are more negative are driven specifically by the dangers of the world they lived in. You made excellent points on the differences in your comment too.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 10 месяцев назад
@@fearlesssfcappuccino yeah, Hawk showed that he felt bad because he gave Eddie a SIGNIFICANT amount of money after learning that the kid had tried to kill himself... Someone who was abusive and narcissistic wouldn't do that. I agree the context of the time period that they're in is incredibly important and it explains a lot of their behavior. It doesn't necessarily excuse it.... he still being kind of shitty to the people that he's having sex with, for sure.... But it's what HAD to be done and back then if you wanted to keep your job. If you were outed as homosexual you pretty much weren't able to be hired anywhere, from what those of that time period of told me. And that would turn into homelessness and potentially prostitution since people needed food to eat and survive, right?... so yeah their actions are because it was kind of life and death. Desperate people can do some very cruel things to save their neck. So people had to be cruel even if they didn't want to be like with Mary throwing her partner under the bus to be able to keep her job and apartment. Within the context of the time period... things make a lot more sense. And since it's a historical show you have to take that historical context into consideration when you're viewing it... you CAN'T view it through a modern lens. But yeah, through a modern lens I would say Tim and Hawks relationship is a VERY unhealthy one. In many different aspects... but even just specifically zooming in on their BDSM dynamics. It's unhealthy even within the BDSM community. If they lived in modern day I would urge Tim to not see Hawk again because he doesn't treat him very well....not as well as he deserves, IMO. but again, we can't look at it through a modern lens.

I don't know a lot about the history of kink so it's difficult to say how sophisticated/formal people's guidelines in a dom/sub relationship was in real life. I wonder what the ideas around it were and how accepted the rules of engagement were. It's clear within this story (even from their first sexual interactions) that Hawk and Tim have always played with that dynamic but the show never had them discuss it outright. We don't know for sure if they're aware that what they're doing has a label, expectations, limits, safety precautions, a set time or anything. So it almost seems like instead of having a set scene where they are clearly role playing with some degree of aftercare and a way to clearly exit the roleplay, they seem to take that dynamic into their day-to-day interactions. They slip in and out of this powerplay in a way that blurs lines far too much to be healthy. There isn't a clear line in the sand separating how they play in the bedroom and how they interact normally. It's a dangerous thing for both of them. That lack of clarity puts Tim in a position where he can be harmed and abused easily and puts Hawk in a postion where he may cause harm when he doesn't intend to. They are often violent and reckless playing on various things that is only kink if everyone knows/accepts it but it toxic if you simply choose to do it to someone without explicit consent. I get the sense that they will push things too far in the rough way they handle each other without communicating properly.

I think back then it was at the beginning of bdsm, they wouldn’t know all that we know now. 11:13 “I just needed to see you Skippy” might be the only sincere thing he said in years! He is fully aware that he’s toxic and that Tim deserves better than him and that’s one of the reasons why he stays away… but at the same time he needs him, he’s so deeply in love with him. You are all worried about Tim’s getting hurt but Tim is expressing his love, his pain, his suffering… he’s following his life trying to change the world… Hawk spent his life in a huge lie without ever being able to live his emotions… I’m not even sure he knows how to do it anymore… his trauma is impossible to overcome 😭

I think you make an interesting point by the fact that once Hawk cut off Tim and started to live life as a straight man, lying all the time had to take a toll. Wearing masks and living life on the defense - knowing how to express or live his emotions must have been foreign. Hawk may have "survived" but he didn't "thrive" as Tim did. But all their lives they were always missing something...

I was in high school in 1991 and had two teachers (theatre and chorus) die of AIDS. It was horrific to see as a gay kid. One of them was in his 20s and looked old and emaciated. He was losing his hair and had the KS lesions. I also volunteered at a hospital as part of our school's community service requirement and saw several men in the ICU die of AIDS. It was absolutely traumatic and completely colored my coming-of-age in the later '90s because the idea of having sex had always carried the threat of death with it.

I was especially moved by the scene where Hawk is laying on his cot in Skip's hospital room and the roommate is talking about him and his partner taking dancing lessons, OMG the look on Hawk's face, I cried!! Haven’t read the other comments, so I don’t know if it has been addressed. The CDC released an article in their MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) disseminated to provide current information on infectious diseases and health issues. The date on that issue was June 5, 1981. That was before the AIDS terminology. It was called GRID (gay-related immune deficiency). It turned the disease into a political disease rather than an infectious disease. It was fought at the mercy if the political atmosphere at the time rather than fighting it as an infectious outbreak requiring isolation and treatment. The general public didn’t view it as a threat bc it was a “gay disease”. The fat population took the efforts to isolate as an affront to their newly realized sexual freedom, especially in New York and San Francisco. Ronald Reagan wouldn’t even voice “AIDS”. There were many theories about the cause and in May of 1983, Barre-Sinoussi and Montagnier released a paper that identified the causative agent as a retrovirus (won Nobel Prize). At that point, they could start working on research to develop an antibody test to the virus which allowed them to identify patients and scan blood units for HIV. Now, with our current technology in molecular diagnostics, viruses can be sequenced and vaccines developed on a much shorter timeline.

Excellent summary, thank you! The only thing I might add is that it took until 1986 or 1987 for the HIV antibody test to be developed and made widely available. Those 3-4 years in between were exceptionally stressful on those of us seeing our friends, loved ones and colleagues fall ill and die.

Even though it was known to be able to be contracted by anyone, not just gay men, there was still stigma and misinformation. I remember classmates claiming you could get it from toilet seats or shaking hands with those infected. Just knowing the hundreds of thousands of lives that could have been spared if it wasn't for the government ignoring the issue for so long still makes me so angry.

Just purchased this today to go along with The Lavender Scare and The Deviants War. Lots of reading for me to do over the coming months.

I've just started reading "Secret City." Thoughtful, thoroughly researched, very well written. A great follow-up to the series. or just on its own as an important part of history.

Frankie reminds me a lot of the character Bostonia, from Nigel Finch”s 1995 film version of “Stonewall.”

Just started watching your reactions to “Fellow Travelers,” great as always, but, unlike with “Heartstopper” or “Young Royals,” where I couldn’t wait for your reaction to come out, I find myself procrastinating watching the next reaction. I think the show is great, but sometimes really hard to watch. I was in my 20’s and living in New York in the ‘80’s, so that adds a whole other level of sadness when I watch. They’ve done a great job depicting that era and the impact of AIDS. I do want to recommend the ITV series “Grantchester” which is set in rural England in the ‘50’s and has a main character who, over the course of 7 seasons, comes to terms with his sexuality, but not before being kicked out of the church, and even going to prison, for being gay. Although the show is much lighter than “Fellow Travelers,” it offers a good look at the things gay men in the UK had to endure. There was a very similar campaign of persecution against the LBTQ community at that time in the UK.

If you remember in the movie Dallas buys club (true story) was created in 1980s by our character, Ron Woodroof had HIV so he went for the search of the medication and he found the medican in mexico but the problem was the medican was not FDA and pharmacology approved even though it did work as he started to sell it privately , cause they need to test it first but at the end the government allowed as i think just temporarily as the one they were testing was failing and killing the patients and this one was working till they can FDA approve it, around the same timeline as this one, governement not giving the medication

“Mad About the Boy” is also Noël Coward’s song from the 1930s about a male love interest.

he may have sung it at private parties..but in public in those days it was only ever performed by women...of course it was a very " queer coded" song and understood as such within the gay community...completely underground as it was at that time

Per your request for book recommendations: - David K. Johnson's "The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government" - "Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington" by James Kirchick Def start with those two. Anyone who has other recs, please feel free to expand on this thread. And in the meantime, if you have an elder gay in your life who lived through this time period, I implore you: talk to them about this. This was an incredibly harrowing time in history that we can't afford to forget, and the people who lived through it are disappearing.

I knew this would be about a relationship btw two men but I didn't expect this dominate/submissive thing going on. As soon as they met at the beginning he has a pet name for Tim...Skippy. Hawk named him this....like he's a child.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 10 месяцев назад
I mean Skippy is just a pet name. PLENTY of couples have pet names for each other... but it is more common within people who are in the BDSM community like Hawk is. It's also a way for Hawk to slightly emotionally distance himself because he does not use Tim's real name... except in the 80s. But yeah the dominant/submissive dynamic surprised me too. I mean I'm honestly fine with it because I'm into BDSM so nothing has been super surprising regarding their dynamic, to me. It is NOT the most healthiest relationship (but that's kind of to be expected... you don't really see completely healthy BDSM dynamics be portrayed in the media, unfortunately) but it is relatively tame kink-wise compared to some other people I've seen in real life in the community. A lot of vanilla people seem to be quite scandalized by the sex scenes in this show. Lol.

@@AnxietyRatsame! I believe kink back then wasn’t as formed as it is today, it was about experimenting (especially in the gay community) so rules about boundaries, safety and after care were not known yet… My sexuality is very close to theirs so I get their dynamic very well!! With the amount of external trauma of those years it wouldn’t be possible to have a healthy relationship no matter what anyway

@@AnxietyRat Actually Skippy was the name of an angel in an audiobook that Hawk's mother would listen to when he was a child. Hawk had kind of spiritual thing about Tim and started calling him Skippy. Yes, the dom/sub was both light and heavy with these two - but always consensual. Tim did get the power on occasion, which made the dynamic interesting, for Hawk especially!! For me, I thought that each only held the power the other was allowing. I never felt that it was toxic. Hot as hell, tho!!!

A lot of queer people, myself included, say that the only time it's acceptable to out someone is when they're using their power, influence, etc. to take rights from or do harm to their own people - it's a dangerous kind of hypocrisy. This episode really forced me to start comparing Hawk to men like McCarthy and Cohn, and it's uncomfortable. I came into this as an eager apologist for him, in part because I love Matt Bomer and will always root for a character he plays (unless they're obviously the villain), and in part because so many of these people were in such impossible situations and were just trying to survive. But, while he's not using his power on the same scale as McCarthy et al, Hawk is still fine with destroying his own people, same as the others. So is Hawk one of those guys who would deserve to be outed? It's something I'm going to rewatch previous eps thinking about.
@AmyC531

They're inflicting the same harm, but McCarthy does it with a machete while Hawk does it with a scalpel.
@goodtime4reboot

Hawk is trying to survive and straddle two worlds which is common even today in both straight and gay relationships. He is defined by dad’s disgust and rejection after catching him on his knees satisfying his first attraction. That set his defenses in motion. Most relationships are 60/40, sometimes 70/30. I don’t see him as a monster. I feel sorry for him. Tim gives away his power readily so he is to blame for that. His whining is annoying and cute at the same time. The other guy in the bathroom tells him he would treat him better but Tim prefers the love he knows Hawk has for him, no matter the sacrifice. It’s called drama, tension folks. Definitely mutual…
@ralphsepulveda5335
@ralphsepulveda5335 9 месяцев назад
The difference is that Hawk, at his core, has an undeniable decency and even heroism (however despicable some of his actions), that the hate-filled McCarthy and Cohn, do not have. It's what makes him a genuinely flawed and tragic figure, and makes for difficult complex drama. Keep in mind, too, that Tim, a conservative naif, starts out as a true believer in McCarthy's right-wing idealogy and anti-Communist agenda, though I'd like to think that his character would have evolved sufficiently today to condemn the Log Republicans paying Trump $250,000 for speeches given after he left office. Powerful self-hating gays still exist.

@@ralphsepulveda5335 That's an interesting thought exercise: What Hawk and Tim would each think of certain specific modern politicians (who were eventually dragged out of the closet, or whose sexuality is an open secret).
