I love it but I wish it was louder idk if it’s just me but whenever I play any Don’t cry the singing is held low compared to other songs but maybe it’s part of the story
There was another vocalist on this song that sang along with Axl. His name was Shannon Hoon. Him and Axl had grown up together and were in church choir together. Shannon went on to be in the band Blind Melon. One of their songs contains the lines, "But I know we can't all stay here forever, so I will write my words on the face of today. And then they'll (the band) paint (add music) it." This perfectly encapsulates the sentiment you expressed about Axl writing these songs and the band adding their part in it to make beautiful music that tells a story. Shannon died of a drug overdose, but his music still lives on. After his death, his band put out an album of previously unreleased tracks. Proceeds for the sale of albums benefitted Shannon's widow and infant child. You are an incredibly articulate and expressive individual, and I love how much you enjoy music. I wish that I could go back and hear some of this music for the first time again. Watching your reactions brings back just a little of that magic of experiencing it like it's new. Thank you for that.
I didn’t know Shannon Hoon was a vocalist on this song. Thanks for that tidbit. Had no idea. I was in 7th grade listening to GNR, mostly songs off the Use Your Illusion albums, to listening to grunge the very next year. It was the very beginning of the 90’s when Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains took over. I consider myself a grunge girl/kid, but luckily didn’t miss out on the Use Your Illusion albums.
They just moved the vigil for Shannon a year ago. Im from close to Lafayette, only knew Shannon through mutual friends, as their vibe didn't catch me until later
It’s refreshing to see a young man as yourself really feel and appreciate the lyrical and instrumental genus of potentially the greatest rock band of all time, especially since rap is primarily your interest in music.
The music video for this song is the first part of a trilogy. The trilogy goes Don't Cry, November Rain, Estranged. The latter one you haven't reacted to yet.
That's no true. At the end of November Rain it says it's based on a short story. Don't cry is based on a real life moment of axl like is says at the end of Don't Cry he is thanking the ex who saved him. And Estranged is a whole other story which I can't remember what it's based on.
One of the best bands ever. I'm 67 and the middle sixties and the seventies were more my time. But the eighties really grabbed me. The kid's would come home from school with guns and roses just pumping out of the stereo. I love your reactions to these bands.
I’m so Thankful you did this you just took me BACK ......... Your hitting the nail on the head with these bands. Guns & Roses was THE BAND back in the day ❤️ and you my friend you have a ear for music ❌⭕️❌⭕️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Bro GNR was the best band ever. Dont let the comments throw you off. The history behind Guns N’ Roses’ “Don’t Cry” is that one of its writers, Izzy Stradlin, was dating a girl whom the other, Axl Rose, happened to also be in love with. And whereas the history of this triangle is a bit convoluted, what it ultimately boiled down to is one day homegirl and Izzy broke up. Then afterwards, she also informed Axl that she and he can no longer be associated either. This broke his heart, and accordingly he began to weep. And the words of comfort she imparted upon him were “don’t cry”. The Stephanie Seymour reference was because he did dedicate it to her. They had a toxic relationship.
Here is a video from 1985 or 86 of them singing Don't Cry. Only reason it was not on Appetite was they already had Sweet Child O' Mine and didn't want two ballads. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q_TM10doKG4.html
A few songs of theirs to check out are Civil War and Knockin’ on Heavens Door. You’d be surprised how they wrote their songs. For example, for Paradise City, they were driving home from a gig and Slash starting playing an Intro Izzy and Duff picked up and started playing it, Slash came up with the cord change and starting humming a melody. Axl Rose then chinned in with “take me down to the Paradise City” A lot of their songs started with Slash playing an intro. Sweet Child O’ Mine was similar.
I don't think it's their best song but there is no song I love listening to more, alone in a dark room. There is something deeper in this song when you listen to it that way. I could listen to it over and over and over again. Even the alternate lyric version is just as good. When I went to their show in '17, I cried when they played this (ironic, yes). It was just the emotions of finally seeing them live after all this time and then having this song performed live and the energy of the band behind it just got to me.
You gotta react to Estranged next. My favorite song of all time. That song, November Rain and Coma are their hardest/deepest songs ever written. Cant change my mind. I hate the fact that i was born in the 90s and didnt get to see them in their prime. But im still hoping they'll come to my country since they're still touring. About to get my secong GNR tattoo sometime in the near future i hope. Great rections man!
Estranged Is like the greatest song ever written (by GNR). So much emotion but also a song you can jam to. I feel like some people don’t like coma that much but I personally really like it. November rain is also an amazing amazing song. Might be important to note that these are there longest songs that I know of, and it never bother me to listen to them in there Entirety. I definitely think he should check those two that he has not yet reacted to.
Masterpiece of songs from Guns N Roses. I feel this entire song when he sings it. Guns N Roses is my favorite Rock band. Definitely give them more of a listen you won't be disappointed.
The ballads they sing the artists that transcend others is the soul they put into the words they feel the words & make you feel the same across any genre of music
I appreciate you being so open to new music, and so vulnerable as you experience it all... you have great input and insight! I really love your channel. I very fortunately get to listen to music at work, and I love listening to great "1st time hearing it" reaction videos, because it makes it a different type of experience. And I have enjoyed your reactions so much, and I thank you! This was always one of my favorite Guns N Roses songs, and even though it is on the sadder sad, it still rocks and has that perfectly places guitar solo. And yes, it's always Slash😂. Glad you have it a chance🙌
You need to check our Skid-Row and Kix and Great White and Warrent and Winger and Linear .... ok ok the last two are more “pop” rock ... your current reactions have taken me RIGHT back to high school. I’m loving it. Keep it up kid fantastic job.
The song was written by GN'R members Izzy Stradlin (guitarist/vocalist) and Axl Rose (lead vocalist/pianist) before they formed Guns N' Roses. Izzy also single handedly wrote Patience before GN'R. He is often overlooked as he quit the band just after he finished Illusions. Gilby Clarke replaced him for the tour and mimes Izzys parts in subsequent videos. Izzy never showed up for Don't Cry hence the 'Where's Izzy' sign in the vid.
A lot of the hate comes from jealousy because guns is the fuckin shit! They can’t stand how BIG guns are and still kicking ass! The fact that their music is still keeping rock alive and will forever.
You got it Jojo. He wrote a lot of these songs (Axl) about his life and what he experienced. Not only could he play piano, dance amazingly, sing like a god, whistle like a bird, lol, he could write songs.
In this video Stephanie Seymour Axl's girlfriend at the time plays the role of Erin Everly who was Axl's ex wife. Sweet Child of Mine was written about Erin also. The story telling was Axl he loved to do that. The lyrics though were written with a girl both Izzy and Axl liked who left them both at various times but he decided to tell a story of him and his ex wife in video
Shannon Hoon I think his name is sang on this. He is the other guy singing with axl. He died early on had a band blind melon. He’s got a unique voice too
There's a guest distinct voice on this track called Shannon Hoon, as seen in this video too singing it with Axl, Shannon's work on this song was amazing. (RIP Shannon Hoon 1967 - 1995).
There is a second version of Don't Cry. This is on Use Your Illusion I, and the second is on Use Your Illusion II. But this video, November Rain, and Estranged make a 3 part short story. I believe, if memory serves, that story is called "Without You" You are listening to great masters of Rock and Roll. If you do not listen to the entirety of Appetite for Destruction.....you are missing hard rock history. The only ANYONE to have two albums release and hold the #1 & 2 spots at the same time. It does me good with the feels to see younger folks pick up the music and enjoy it as much as we did when it came out.
Dont listen to the haters! GnR is a band you will never forget they are the best. The definition of rockstars. I can see why they are seen as controversial sometimes but the media loved to hate them. You will never come across a person who is that loved and hated at the same time as Axl Rose. But I love him for all his mistakes he had a rough life and always gets all the blame for the band even if he was the only one ”sober”, holding the band together and writing new material(with Izzy)
You should have watched this video before November Rain. It is part 1 of a video trilogy that consisted of “Don't Cry,” “November Rain,” and “Estranged.”
Axl Rose" sang most/all of their stuff. The name "Guns" came from a guitarist they had before Slash, Tracii Guns, and he was in a band called "L.A. Guns". They have some good ones too. -- Electric Gypsy -- No Mercy -- The Ballad of Jayne"...
One of my favorite guns n' roses songs. I need to document this somewhere so it happens but I've said before that I would like this song played at my funeral
The baby had blues at the start....and green eyes at the end.....just so you know. Its about about death and rebirth. P.S. Dont Cry was one of the first songs they wrote as Guns N Roses.....its over 35 years old now and there is three versions of it, this version was on Use Your Illusion 1, UYI 2 has an alternate version with different lyrics and there is a third version that was only recorded as a demo..........this song was a long time in the making.....
i know milions of this songs but yes axl was a special one...raised away from parents become junkie and alcoholic almost die many times and he is still here...a guy like him was special....check his piano skils in live in paris in 1.03,10 second
Axl, Slash and Izzy wrote alot of their songs together...Izzy was another guitar player in the band! Axl was badass all around....you tube guns n roses in st. louis in the 80's and you will see Axl yelling at someone in the crowd then proceed to jump into the crowd and punch a guy in the face!! LOL!! A video i love to watch is Live or Let Die from GNR....it's just a video of them in concerts and you just get a great feel how it was to be at one of their concerts!! I have seen Axl live in concert and he was amazing!!!
While I am quite late, yes, much of Guns N Roses' lyrics are heavily inspired by real-life events. This can even pertain to music videos such as this. The scene where a woman (Axl's then-fiance Stephanie Seymour) wrestles a gun from him is based on a real time where Axl pulled out a gun in a suicide attempt. His then-wife/gf Erin Everly grabbed it from him before he could actually shoot himself. Axl Rose is.. a deeply troubled individual. With a horrific abusive-in-every-way-possible childhood (yes, even sexual abuse), he draws on his pain for art. He often writes very introspective stuff ranging from attempted suicide, bad relationships and messy people, paranoia, and even just growing up and changing. He's got a lot of controversy regarding his behavior in the 90s, but he's really not that person he used to be known as. He's mellowed out a lot and does quite a bit of charity work for disadvantaged kids, runaways, and sick kids, with a stronger focus on the often-neglected teenagers. He's a deeply fascinating person to look into. But if anyone does, I will warn you that reading up on his childhood is very uncomfortable and may make you sick to your stomach. The guy went through a lot of fucked up shit.
I love how you look at these songs. How you describe the outside looking in perspective and when you said they’re like a cake that when you cut inside, there’s dynamite inside and it explodes. You got it, man. That’s GnR
This is a song about a girl Axl was into and had dated Izzy. The song has been around since axl and Izzy were still in Indiana. Shannon Hoon (from Blind Mellon) is a friend of Axl's from Indiana and that is why he was invited to sing on the track.
Axl Rose is not from this world, that's why he's able to write about his life and our lives from an alien like perspective, figuratively speaking of course, he has always been one step ahead of us, he's a paradigm breaker, that's his role!! Also he's an empath. That's a tremendous conflict within a person like him.
Also estranged. It’s a trilogy. I believe they are all amaaazing songs even without the story which I haven’t really gotten into and I’ll need to watch the videos. Such a good band
You really should just listen to their entire Appetite for Destruction album- back in the day, we got to the music store to get the cassette as fast as we could- it would be sold out everywhere- There were many bands we had to do that with- the great 80’s early 90’s! And Happy Birthday!🎉🎁 ✌️
Shannon Hoon, singer of Blind Melon was doing backups vocals in the video (and single version of the song I believe) and he was a great vocalist in his own right. He died of a heroin overdose in I believe 1995/96, another taken too soon.
I work for one of the power companies here in Indiana and Axl Rose is from Lafayette Indiana. One of our maintenance guys went to school with him and knew him in high school
I used to sing and play this on the piano when I was a teenager (early 90s). It was one of my ten favourite songs to spontaneously play when I just 'saw' a piano someplace. I hadn't heard it in a long time, and I don't really listen to GNR/80s rock as much as I used to, but this was downright nostalgic. Thanks LFR JoJo :) Maybe I'll dust off the piano and give it a go--music memory lives in our muscles if we play something enough, so surely I must remember it. :)
It was written by axl rose and guitarist izzy. First song they wrote. About a izzy's girlfriend who axl liked she told them dont cry when she left them. And the fight scene at the beginning is based on one between axl and ex erin everly.
Now search 'Don't Cry 1987' in youtube and listen to that. It's a demo of this song from about 5ish years before they actually recorded it and it sounds awesome
This is the first of the Illusion video trilogy based on a short story by Del James called "Without You" that was written mostly based on the real life relationship and hardship of lead singer Axl Rose with his model girlfriend/wife Erin Everly. The next video to watch in order is "November Rain", followed by "Estranged". Erin, by the way is the daughter of Don Everly of the classic rock band The Everly Brothers. You can see her in their video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" video from when they were dating, a song he wrote about her specifically (she's the pretty brunette in the white shirt taking pictures). The girl in this video is Axl's real life super model girlfriend Stephanie Seymour, who dated him after he and Erin officially were done with each other and in processes of divorce. Stephanie and Axl split and had their own lawsuit drama going on by the the time the filmed the third video for "Estranged", so they rewrote that video around her not being there. I highly recommend you follow this storyline with the next two videos. :)
Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon sang back up vocals on this song and was in the video! Shot up Heroin and died at 27 just like, Cobain, Hendrix, Joplin and Jim Morrison! 😢
