Guns n Roses sound like a band from the 70s on steroids.... because the members all have different music backgrounds, Duff comes from the punk rock scene, Axl likes Elton John and Queen and Slash loves blues and guitar players from the 70s like Joe Perry and Jimmy Page, that's why their sound is so unique. Most hair metal bands were trying to copy Van Halen that's why they all sound the same.
Been a minute since I listened to this album. You can tell Duff probably had a lot of influence on the first track. "Right Next Door To Hell" sounds like it could be a Misfits song if it was stripped down and simplified some more.
They're not a hair band. They get lumped into that because they played the Sunset Strip during the period but they were a big f*** you to hair metal. Hair metal was the guitar player being an Eddie Van Halen clone and the lead singer trying to do a David Lee Roth impression. Read Slash's or Duff Mckagan's books. Trust me...they're not hair metal.
If you want more experimentation from Axl, there's always Chinese Democracy. There might be a bit too much experimentation for first few dozen listens, but there are some super ambitious tracks there. Some of the best stuff Axl has written imo.
Most 80's metal is like the most fun party ever. Most 90's rock gives you the vibe of what the hangiver from that party might feel like. Guns N Roses and Skid Row are two bands that are the in between of that where youre hungover but still partying or something
Poor Izzy Stradlin doesn't get the praise he deserves. Well he did back in the day in the guitar mags but now apparently he doesn't exist. He played rhythm guitar so well offering a seamless bridge between drums and Slash's leads.
Hair bands came up at the same time and in the same scene. But GN'R has way too many influences from different genres reflected in their music to be slammed as just another wannabe Van Halen.
Don’t Cry was written before they released their first album, appetite for destruction. They intentionally kept the song off the album in case it tanked they’d still have a commercially viable ballad to release on their sophomore album. Blind Melon used to cover don’t cry before it’s official release, as it had already become a locally (LA) popular song
OH! I almost forgot. Slash is NOT the only guitarist on the first 4 GNR albums. Izzy Stradlin is the rhythm guitarist (and the unsung hero / MVP of the band). UYI EYE LOL We need UYI 2 next
Old Slash was very very melodic and the best part is that what he did would fit perfectly into the feeling of the song musicly and blended with the feeling of the lyrics. You can feel anger, love, saddness, etc.. on his guitar parts when the song also talks about that. It's amazing. Same with Axl's vocals, his great range and his feeling is perfect.
"Dust N Bones" is a masterpiece. I didn't like it as much as a bratty teenager when the album first came out but over the years I've realized it's maybe the best song they ever did. "14 Years" has the same vibe.
Yes. The song names were intentional and not coincidental - The Garden, The Garden of Eden, Don't Damn Me and Bad Apples - get it? And that piano style you're referring to is honky tonk piano. GNR have all kinds of blues music in their roots. Also shout out to Alice Cooper for the guest vocals on The Garden.
GNR is my favorite band since 92. "Use your Illusion II" and "Appetite for Destruction" are great albuns. Nice channel dude. Looking forward for your success.
Don't even dare putting Guns N Roses in the same shelf as bands such as Poison or Winger. That's the first thing. Second thing, it's not because the band wears leather jackets and stuff like, that it means it's a glam hair metal band. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, for example, did that, and they were heavy metal bands.
Since you had asked about Axl's vocals. Axl is a natural baritone, so his lower register is indeed deep. He is famous for his high pitch screeches, and for his rasp, but his lower register is just as awesome as his other vocals :)
I don't see that anyone else mentioned this, but the whole band, aside from Axl, had to record their stuff in one take. No plug in a note here and there if they screwed up. They had to start over from the beginning. Their logic was, if they can't do it in a comfy studio, how the hell would they pull it off live? Matt Sorum, the drummer on this record, found that out the hard way when he started recording this album. They may have had their demons, but they were pros and took their craft very seriously.
Guns and roses are in a category in the genre of their own. Go listen to the most important album ever recorded, appetite for destruction, and then will then we can negotiate
Yep, they have a rhythm guitarist. Izzy Stradlin in the studio versions of the Illusion albums and Gilby Clark when they played live after Izzy left. Essentially all their songs on this album have rhythm guitar backing Slash.
GNR Was The Biggest Rock Band All The Time, In Late 80'S, GNR Won The MTV Video Music Award (VMA), Since 1989,1990,1992,1993. Beating U2 Albums, Metallica Albums, And Nirvana Albums in The MTV Music Video Award. Then GNR Vacuum in The Middle Of 1993, Then Came The Famous Alternative Bands, Such As: Nirvana, Pearl jam, And SmashingPumpkins. Nirvana is Famous For Entering The Same Music Recording Studio As GNR, Namely Universal Studio Music, Through The Album Nevermind. Even though Previously Nirvana Was Not Famous at The Time, When They Were Still in Their Indipop Music Studio. The Famous Alternative Music Band From 1993-1995. Then GNR Held A Reunion At Troubadour in L.A. And The Coachella Music Festival in 2006. Many Hollywood Artists Came, Watched The GNR Reunion, Because Everyone Missed The Band GNR Rock Music, Because The Music GNR Was Very Nice To Hear. I Loved The Band GNR. From Solihin in Central Jakarta. Indonesia. 💖👫💖👫👌👍👏👏.
I enjoyed your rants on this video, i mean... can't force ppl to like what i love ( GNR) but i enjoy when ppl give the chance to hear it and think about it.
Whitesnake, not a hair band. Only if you know their 1987 hits do you think they are a hair band. They are an offshoot of Deep Purple that started in the late 70's but adopted the "glam" image and more pop sound in 1987 to get MTV airplay. Hair band is a dumb term anyway, the look or image does not define the music. Are they still a "hair band" if they cut their hair but still play the same music, as many did? Are bands that had big hair but play other genres like country or R&B also "hair bands"? And this music has outlasted all the fads that came and went since. I'm not looking for the "true answer" from this lol, just morbidly curious what a millennial who wasn't around and knows nothing about this music has to say.
The reasons why some classify them as such are just because of superficiality and has nothing to do with their actual music. Its people who have not truly heard them jugding them as such since they are a 80s band from LA with a frontman wich in the early days did have the big hair etc. And also many people dont really understand the difference in genres and think all rock bands with a classic frontman from the 80s in general must be a hair/glam band since that was the big rock thing the ignorant outsider assosiates with that decade. I have heard the same kind of people reffering to Iron Maiden as a hair/glam band to LOL 🤣 Its the same kind of people who think all bands with a hard sound and electric guitar of the 90s are grungde 😅
If you want to try & listen to GnR, it is best to start from the beginning. It does not matter, only if you are already a fan. Since you are not a fan, I would suggest starting with Appetite for Destruction. It is GnR's first album and also their best (I love all GnR's albums, but I have been a fan for many years).
Ive seen the November Rain video MANY times but I dont remember seeing a zombie Axl at the end. I did however see a meme of Axl with green paint all over his body just today somewhere else, I think it was from the same time as that video. It may have even been a part of the "official" release of Dont Cry/November Rain/Estranged trilogy set
@@SBM-wl6mn ye, " use your illusion 1 and 2 " are good, but in my vision, "appetite for destruction" is so more better, don't have any bad song, different from " use you illusion 1 and 2 ".
Bad Obsession was almost included on Appetite for Destruction in place of Mr. Brownstone. Don't Cry was actually the song the band was signed for. And, November Rain's origins can also be traced back to the AFD days.
thank god they kept brownstone and every track on appetite and in the order it was put together as it is simply perfect the way it is. Both in regards to the material but also the order of each track is such a perfect organic thing. Unlike illusion albums wich have many great songs but the tracks and their atmosphere are all over the place\ in regards to what track follow the other. From one exreme on one track to a complete opposite extreme on the next at times. Only song i could do without on appetite is "Anything goes tonight"
@@roseclarity1493 this is the 2nd album so right after the drama 😁 Gilbys first studio album as well as Matt the drummers 1st,although weirdly izzy wrote quite a lot of the album as well as quite a lot of use your illusion 2 😁
Amazing man great video the green Axl was in Dont cry if im not mistaken also u analysized the songs great i used to think rock was all screaming to until i started out watching GNR and other bands ps i liked ur cute dog.❤😊
BRO WTF 😂 I LOVEEEEEEED this review. Literally feel like im hanging out with one of my fav homies. Made it through the whole USE YOUR ILLUSION *EYE* LOLOL video. (It’s Use Your Illusion *1* my guy) And honestly I loved this video. Couldn’t wait to load up your review of UYI 2. Except it doesn’t exist. Cmon man! Hence the WTF. Love ya bro and enjoyed this video immensely. You totally fell for this album. You gotta check out UYI 2. We need your review!!!! 🤘🏽
Hair bands didn't tour with Metallica, hair bands were not known and labeled as a dangerous show. Hair bands didn't get kicked out of venues to never play again.
@@alicja7282 however, another point motley Crue didn't start riots in the audience and walk off stage and not finish their set tearing apart a brand new arena AKA St. Louis guns n' roses 93 I believe it was 93. They did that
RANTZ, You must see and hear GNR " Estranged' Songs concert in "Brazi"l. Axl Sings The song Estranged While Smoking Wearing A Blue bandana and American Pants. The Song "Estranged" Is The Killer melodies Guitar Slash and Long music Like "November Rain". From Solihin Central Jakarta, Indonesia.💖👫💖👍👌👏👏👏👏.
Please listen to Use your illusion II. There are also very good tracks on it and I think you also should listen to Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi is my favorite band they have very many wonderful songs
Always hated so called hair metal with a passion. GnR were better than the rest of these bands though..I wouldn't even consider them as part of the same genre. Same place, same time but GnR had some balls at least.
