To answer your question it 100% is a competition. But there's so much more to it than that, so if you're at all interested I recommend looking up some documentaries on ballroom and ballroom culture.

What is it that you found tacky? Also, while the dance moves were the same, each dancer had a different order and variation on the moves, so it's not actually the same dance over and over. Also, everyone is wearing the same color because the theme is "Purple Princess".
