It is a bit of twisted irony that the characters Divine played were supposed to be women...but I could not envision any real biological women effectively playing characters like Babs Johnson and Dawn Davenport. He brought this maniacal zeal to his roles that I have yet see any actress could match...the closest is Faye Dunaway in the Mommie Dearest wire hanger scene.

This is the best example of the John Waters concept. Flipping norms, all the best quotes, and secretly empowering...to not only Queers but all outsiders.

A friend of mine loaned me his bootleg copy of this masterpiece back in the early 90's. I was finally watching a John Waters film. I had read Shock Value in the early 80's and become obsessed with his world. His movies were very hard to come by where i lived in Canada so when I got this treasure I watched it twice in a row. It was everything and more. my poor brain just melted and I quivered in glee. I have been watching it regularly ever since, 30 years later. P.S. I never did return that bootleg copy, sorry Michael. And my Biggest , sincere thank you from the bottom of my twisted heart, Coke Francis. You are simply Divine.

Totally agree. Female Trouble is the most fully developed, well made and well acted of the pre Hairspray John Waters films IMO.

I agree! Female Trouble is the all time greatest Waters film in my opinion. So many great scenes. Coming in second is Polyester because it was interesting to see Divine play the victim for a change.

Female Trouble is both the best and my favourite movie of all time. Polyester is my second favourite movie. I saw Divine play live multiple times - she played a couple of times up the road from my house in London and I was honored that she’d bring her filth to my neighborhood of Harlesden at The Mean Fiddler.

I first met John Waters in Provincetown, 2018, the summer the Criterion edition of this cinematic trash was released. Shortly before release date, Waters was selling them at a clothing shop. I was thrilled to be the first person to purchase the Blu-ray. His inscription informed me that he "wouldn't $u©k my lousy ©0©k even if [he] was suffocating and there was oxygen in my balls!"

An amazing movie, I love John Waters, but I think that his best film is Polyester. Tab Hunter, Odorama, Edith Massey as Cuddles... It's just fantastic.

Pink Flamingos is in my canon of Western Civilisation. I personally think that "Female Trouble" is his magnus opus. I'm straight (mostly) and I've known about John Waters since the 80's. I was lucky in my friends.

I think Female Trouble is the best Waters film. Desperate Living could have been the best, but it suffered from very low production values. It definitely has the craziest story.

My favorite might be Polyester, which is a good movie that's still bizarre, and i love Derek, the Baltimore Foot Stomper, and Stiv Bators is in it as Bobo Bellsinger. Just chiming in as a proud gay husband. My husband is the playwright of Divine/Intervention (Outstanding Play of the 2016 NYC Fringe and subsequent run in Philly.) It depicts a completely imagined fictitious conversation (but is nevertheless endorsed by the Divine estate) between Glenn and Divine through a makeup mirror alone in their hotel room the night of their death. (Mildred dies of apnea, just saying since many think it was an overdose.) The following morning Milstead was supposed to report to the set of Married… With Children where he was to play the role of Uncle Otto, which was speculated would become a recurring character. Recounting their life, loves, and career, Divine and Glen argue as Divine is hurt and furious that Glen was pursuing a career in non-drag roles. She argues that it was her filth and activism that makes them important and iconic. Glen wants to grow and expand his career. It’s funny but ultimately crushing. Two things to note is that he couldn’t include because they occurred after his death. 1. The first was as you mentioned, Ursula from The Little Mermaid. And 2. The note on the flowers at Glen’s funeral from the Married producers: “If you didn’t want to do the show, you could have just fucking said so.”

Don't forget the chicken episode or the Eggman or the hot dog tied to his appendage😂😂 his movies would be banned today.

It's been so many years since I've seen this movie. Reliving it again through this video was so much fun. Desperate Living is probably my favorite John Waters movie, but it feels so weird to say that being that it's a Divine-less film. So maybe there's an asterisk next to that top spot. Or maybe removing that one super recognizable and iconic element from the Waters films, the presence of Divine, makes it seem even more dreamlike and fucked up. I dunno. Charles Laughton was great, and made multipe movies, but Laird Cregar was even better, in my book. And they had absolutetly nothing in common other that the acting bug, as far as I know.
