This is the third and final video in a series detailing how to build a pressure treated fence. This project will be roughly 225 linear feet of fence.
In this clip we: move three posts and dig new holes, set the posts, concrete the posts, backfill the holes, install framing for fence boards, install the fence boards, build and hang two gates and install post caps.
All framing is done with deckmate 2 1/2" screws and fence boards are installed with galvanized 7/16" staples.

8:10 mins in, instead of floating 2 by's next time build a box frame and screw to post, lots stronger and more stable, or you could put a brace on the back of the 2 by's so if it does want to sag it will be stabilized by the weight transfer into bottom of post . Nice job, keep up the good work mate!

I didn't get the part about burying the boards in the dirt. My *opinion* is to leave about an 8" space to the ground. That way you can run a push mower beneath it when cutting grass, as well as still have plenty of room for a 4" typical mulch. The boards don't rot, and as far as the eye is concerned the fence looks like it runs right to the ground.

I agree with you that there should be some gap below the fence bottom, but, the owner preferred it to be tight. Thanks for watching

That is a really nice place, the homeowner must work those gardens constantly! The fence is a great addition, nice work!

What is the name of the gate hinges you used? I can’t find anything similar available in the UK. Gates look great.
@horstcarpentry

It was a gate kit from Home Depot. Here's a link to the kit. Maybe can get it from another source over in your neck of the woods. www.homedepot.com/p/Homax-EasyGate-No-Sag-Gate-Bracket-Kit-2614/100020199

Security may not be an issue now,but it will be in the near future. They were smart, not paranoid to build that fence!

What's the difference in putting the boards up individually vs the ones at home depot that comes in clusters. I need a fence im looking for all pros and cons before making up my mind
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 года назад
If you have a flat yard that you are fencing in then using the prebuilt sections would be easy for sure. I feel it's easier to install the boards one at a time. I prefer the way it looks, but, it does cost more.

Doesnt galvanized degrade in PT wood?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 года назад
New hardware is triple dipped galvanized.

Galvanized siding nails like the ones you used will degrade and fail. Use ceramic or stainless fasteners.

Are you using 4X4 or 6X6 for the post?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 года назад
The gate posts are 6x6's and the field posts are 4x4's.

Is the 6X6 mandatory for the gate post? Or you wanted to do it just to be on the safe side. I’m going to do my fence in a month or two so I just want to be sure. Thanks again
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 года назад
Did it for the extra strength. It is not necessary to be a 6x6 for the gate posts.

Horst Carpentry wow😳 3 weeks and 2 days! Plus parts for only 10k, this type of job in the UK would cost much more🙄 good job btw, why didn’t you use kick boards?

Here in Texas that would be $1,200 materials and labor and the customer would still be saying thats to much i need to move out of this area.

I've learned that it may be better to get the job and have a fence company do it for me. They can do the installs so much faster, but, this was done for someone close to me and they wanted it done a certain way. This is mostly why I was involved. If that's all you can charge for a fence like this then you definitely are in the wrong area or you have the wrong customers. I've met some people that will almost pay anything, within reason, as long as it's me doing it for them because they are very particular about the way things are done. The right customers may a world of difference. Thanks for the comment

No problem and yes that was the total cost. But, don't forget that was before the coof so price will likely be much higher now.

We build hundreds of fences annually. With technology this fence should have been a 3 to 4 day job. Your 1X4's were not made for ground contact. Don't teach bad habits.

Sometimes contractors are more concerned with doing what the homeowners asks of them, even if the contractor knows it’s not necessarily correct. Money occasionally tends to be what matters most opposed to meeting some crazy made up code requirement for a fence that I don’t believe would have got inspected. Let the guy video his work. It’s a whole lot better than what most people do and no need to ride his ass, he never claimed to be a fencing company and never told anyone that this was how you’re supposed to do it. He built a good fence in my eyes and If I was your average homeowner who couldn’t build a fence by himself I’d likely hire Horst carpentry far before a company with a bunch of fellers that talk like you
