I noticed on the previous competition, when they drove a staple into the post, the whole post vibrated. I suppose this is indicative when you use a post driver vs a hole with tamping. The post just isn't as tight. Now they say, the post will eventually tighten up after a summers worth of rain. Also notice they were using light grade fencing material. Lot different from the stuff we got from Sheffield Steel in the '70s. Imported from China? LoL
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 5 лет назад
what you see is the post vibrating because it's a 10 foot post driven nearly 5 feet into the ground...it's not shaking in the hole...it's tight as a banjo string in the hole....digging and tamping isn't as good because you're just mushing the loose dirt that you dug out...there is not loose dirt here brotha...these post are firmly planted in the ground
@kenarnold9132
@kenarnold9132 5 лет назад
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Yeah, I suppose driven poles are ok. I was brought up with the holes mostly by hand in hard clay and tamping them in with a 1x1/2 board. Dad never settled for anything less than railroad cross ties and telephone poles he got from the REA for corner posts. Brought back one that was 3ft diameter one time !!!! Took 2 whole days to set that one !! Used our Ford 8n to stretch the woven, then a set of rope pullys specifically designed for barbed wire. (got a 4 inch scar on my left arm where the wire snapped at the other end and coiled back on me though. Could've been worse) Strung a lot of fence on those 60 acres back in '70, and they still stand today. Pretty cool videos though, Thanks !

Every fencer in the video takes on steeper hills and rock. It's the life we live, and as tough as everyone wants it to be in their own backyard, it's the same the world around. Nobody's fencing off the nice flat clear land with no rock.
@peterpannell3908
@peterpannell3908 4 года назад
I’m sure they work on steeper and more demanding but you did describe it as steep! The whole comp was a bit staged seeing there will be huge numbers of people round the world ready to comment on the finished product! . Could you include judges comments and scoring . We need to see and assess for ourselves your competency. My personal quick assessment, as a contractor with 40yrs experience left me with a few uneasy feelings about the methods and standard of the work. However I might well be totally wrong as we couldn’t get close enough to the action to be accurate in commenting. Other countries run these competitions too, some cross world participation would be most interesting. After all some poor old farmer has to pay for what we do, cutting costs, saving time whilst having fun can only assist the agricultural economy. Still enjoyed the program look forward to more. I noticed the medal post follow the angle of the hill coming down the face of it were the wood post were all straight up instead of following the angle why? An what advantage does driving the post over using an auger an planting the post?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 5 лет назад
So...some fence builders put post in "Square to the world" and some "plumb or level" depends on what the builder and or land owner wants. I personally prefer level or plumb with a level...not with the lay of the land. While driving down the highway pay attention to fences..you'll see all sorts!
@farmfencesolutionsllc
@farmfencesolutionsllc 5 лет назад
On steep terrain, you lose post height on the angle. In other words, there is less post in the ground if it's level, and not perpendicular to the ground. A driven post is considerably stronger, and much faster than a dug in post.

Oh how soon we forget in this country that we're all immigrants unless we're Native Americans. Build the wall to keep out the corrupt and the drains on our society! Open the gates to others who want a better life in this land of opportunity......guess who's building our highways, houses and infrastructure in this country.....while an able bodied work force of unskilled labor is sitting at home milking unemployment checks and eating themselves into disability. @Stoney Ridge Farmer Not a fence guy but I had a thought. I don't know what you think but you can probably ask the Tornado Wire people. It occurred to me that a triangular "gusset" could be tied into the fencing wire at the transition posts. It seems to me that would help maintain even tension across all of the horizontal strands. Would that advantage outweigh the disadvantage of not having a continuous run and having additional splices in the fence?
@farmfencesolutionsllc

Just my opinion and I personally have allot of room to grow. The Steel appears to be sleek and possibly be easier if he has welding rig & experience, seems more permanent. However I seem to prefer the wood as it gives that traditional look, as a note I have never built that type of fencing. I will definitely try it on our new acreage, all the crews & their methods are definitely impressive it was hard to pick which team was more favorable. In the end its the Hard workers that will come out on top and the ones that have a love for their craft. Absolutely one of my favorite vlogs series..!!!

Seems the metal fence posts were put in perpendicular to the ground on the slope, not plumb like the wood posts. Any particular reason for this?
