Two of Fender’s popular reissue valve amplifiers - which one would you choose?
Life too short for long RU-vid videos? See the ‘interesting bits and go-to sections timings’ below
Welcome to the show!
We recently did an episode comparing Fender’s highly successful ’65 Deluxe Reverb-Amp with the newer Tone Master Deluxe Reverb. You can watch it here: • Fender ’65 Deluxe Reve...
That video spurred a whole load of comments asking us to compare other amps, but top of the list was the Deluxe Reverb Vs the Super Reverb reissues. We own both, so here goes!
In this video we discuss a bit of (very) loose history, then play them clean and cranked with classic single coils and humbuckers, before trying a handful of common or garden overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals.
For everyone minded to comment on what we //didn’t// do, yes, we know we only used the high input of the vibrato channels. There are a whole other palette of sounds from the low inputs and the other channels, should you wish to experiment.
No P90s either. No idea how we omitted that - apologies to all you P90 people.

I'm a 22 year old that's been a fan of the show for a couple of years now. One night my mom's friend who's been a professional guitar player all his life, touring all over Canada and Europe, came for diner and played through my rig. He wrote to me the next day saying "Man, can I come back to your place with my touring gear? I have to make my rig sound like yours". If that isn't the single greatest compliment a man can get, I don't know what is. Thanks Dan and Mick! (btw I'm running a PRS Mira flame top through a Hudson Sidecar or Broadcast -> Kingsley Constable -> Ecochord tape delay -> Catalinbread Talisman -> Strymon Deco into a Marshall JTM and a vintage Plexi-like Traynor in stereo)

I remember my guitar teacher interrupting me recently to say “that’s one of the best strat tones I’ve ever heard”... AVRI ‘62->Sunface bc-183->Golden Boy->Page->Ardx20->V40D... Same. Much as the playing and listening is great, I'd get bored just watching more people playing more gear well on youtube. It's the discussion and knowledge sharing that makes it stand out. I don't want to just watch demos of gear if I'm not particularly likely to buy, but am still interested in. Discussion helps you get more of an idea of the "in the room" stuff that youtube can never properly translate.

Beautiful amps. As a Super Reverb owner and gigging musician (in Australia...luckily!) I think portability is a MASSIVE criteria here. I'm less inclined to take my Super over my Vox AC15 to most venues despite sonic preference. The Deluxe is more compact and convenient hence it being high on the 'next purchase' list. Love them both amd great demos here as usual. Really interesting vid, thank you :)

Towards the end you guys describe why the deluxe is such a killer “pedal platform,” it lets each of those common (or garden) overdrive types speak with their own unique midrange character. Few amps do that as well to my ears. Also, wow the humbuckers, with their extra midrange into scoopy amps like these sounds magical!

Haha isn't it great we all have different tastes? Before I started this clip, I was sure I was gonna prefer the Super for cleans, and the Deluxe for pedals. Turns out I thought the Super handled those pedals _way_ better than the Deluxe. The clean tones were 50/50 to me. That really depended on the guitars they played and the settings they used. For my tastes and what I play, the Super (slightly) came out ahead. Sadly, both are way too loud for me to be of any practical use anyway. I need a bigger house. And less neighbours.

Ah man. There are many days I wish I was American. Mick here. British music is very cool of course, but it ain’t Derek Trucks and Doyle and SRV and Albert and BB and the other Albert and Robert Cray and, well.... all of those dooooods.

Brilliant guys superb show, I’m on my second, no... third watch and blown away with the super reverb amp, what a solid sounding amp and I agree with Dan re the Vox statement, the super holds its own and is true to what ever is thrown at it. Mick the drive tones were awesome and thank you both for throwing it out there. Thanks Mick & Dan. ❤️👌

Really dig this episode! Would love to see you guys discuss methods and thoughts that go into pairing amps together in stereo- not sure if you’ve ever covered this topic but stereo is something I have yet to go for but really been on my mind lately

This was fascinating. Each time you switched amps I decided which amp I preferred... and then you'd bring out the next pedal and I'd prefer the other amp. (And of course the best sound was both amps.)

Damn that super might be one of my favorite sounding amps. I'm going to have to find one to play. The playing from you two was great this episode. Really enjoyed it. I'm definitely interested in the brown, black, tweed comparison

Great video. Probably the third time I’ve watched. Sometimes I miss blue, but for no apparent reason. Glad that you own both the Les Paul and the 61 now. Thanks again for all your work!

Im not usually a Fender amp guy but they both sounded great. I waa a little critical of your last video regarding the Tone Master but this video was really excellent. Changed my thinking with exquisite tones. Wow.

Note: in many ways I preferred the super on 6 to either amp with any of the overdrive pedals. The amp might not give one enough sustain for certain styles of playing, but I love how crunchy the amp is- yet still sounds big, dynamic, and exciting, where a lot of drive pedals have a "smooth" or flat sound.

Bought a Princeton "plus" in the 90s as a practice amp... Since it's solid state, I eventually went off it. But (thanks to TPS!) I have found it is a lot of fun in a home Wet/Dry setup. Lovely cleans and nice reverb.

I have really nice headphones and all I can say is those amps were rocking so hard I could hear the room buzzing and would describe it a "coins jingling" in the left ear off in the distance. I love it. Audio is amazing. Love to see Dan and Mick being passionate. I guess that's what this is all about. People watch the show and relate.

Finally got my first proper tube amp after years of listening to you gents going on about how tubes are just better. I have to say, although I still think there are some decent solid state amps... I won't be going back. It's a brave new (old) world.

I have a vintage 54 deluxe, my buddy has the modern reissue. In a side by side it was remarkably close with the vintage having a softer sweetness. The reissue had a top end brittle sound. After obtaining a new Weber speaker without cone edge glue which the Weber ppl said would give a broken in sound. The new speaker really helped . Now both amps sound lovely with the ability to scream. So we feel the reissue is great. Just like listening to any two amps they both sound wonderful but different. We feel the deluxe reverb, old and new, are wonderful choices. Humbucker s are best to support mids. In a club situation I dime the volume and turn the bass way down to cut through. The desert island amp of all time... bedroom to club! Great show, pod on fellas!

I bought the (2017) 65 Blackface Princeton Reverb, and I was Blown-away how Good it Sounded. It surpassed all of my lofty expectations. Has those Fender Cleans . . . they are famous for. Small, Loud & takes pedals well. I will Never be without. I preferred The Deluxe here by a mile. I love that " Chime "

Yessir! I have one too and it's the best on and off stage. Run it at about 6 with a TS and touch of delay and it cuts through the mix with drums, bass and any other instruments. Use the guitar volume and tone for solos and rhythm.

Anyone else getting some Eric Johnson vibes from Dan on the Gretsch at the end there with that chord improv type stuff? Bloody Lovely! And Mick bringing the fire with that Fuzz Phrase...smokin’. Fab show as always guys. Your enthusiasm for all things guitar and tone is infectious and inspiring. Of all the guitar channels, TPS wins every day of the week!

Great show! The Super sounded really special. We always hear how Fender amp's are different from each other and how they've changed over time. If Vox amps have done the same, I think a similar show would be pretty cool. Would also LOVE to see a Tweed vs Vox show since Tweeds are more mid focused and urgent. Thanks as always fellas

There was not one instance in this video in which I didn’t prefer the Super. Every riff and phrase had more depth and richness - if you can play at those volumes. I know Dan & Mick we’re keeping things as “real world” as possible, but even with that, they’re cranking the amps far louder than I’m able to. I have an Oldfield Honky Tonk D’Lux, basically a ‘59 tweed Deluxe with 6L6s and a Vibrolux output transformer, which makes it a 35w Deluxe. The only time I’ve ever turned it past 2 I got compliments from the neighbors on how Sultans of Swing was coming along 🙄. So, hell yeah, if you can push the amp a bit, the Super sounds amazing. For the rest of us, the Deluxe, or even a Princeton, is about what we can get away with and keep up good relations with family and friends.

I completely agree on your general point. And I also liked the Super more (I already knew that though, the clean tone of a Super is to die for). However, when he pulled out the es-335 at about 26:00 I preferred the Deluxe's natural overdrive way more. The Super almost turned into fuzz-territory to my ears. Which can also be cool and useful ofcourse, but to me the Deluxe won out in that particular section. Anyway, I'm more of a single coil man so to me and how I play the Super would win it hands down. Which brings me to your point. Who the hell gets to play a Super anyway without getting intimately acquinted with your local police officer?

There’s just something very special about a SuperReverb. I miss mine so much but just didn’t have the luxury of playing where I could turn it up where it needed to be. It’s prob my favorite amp I’ve ever played......
