I owned the original version of this guitar that I bought in 1977 and gigged with it in my band while in college. I was a Tele guy and wanted a guitar that had humbuckers so I could keep pace with enough oomph to keep up with my buddies that played Les Paul’s. Was a great instrument - wish I still had it.
From Leo: Happy for you that you got a guitar you really like. I had several Fender guitars with three screw necks. Some of them I owned for 20 plus years. Never once had a single problem..
I still have my original 1976 Deluxe & a 1978 custom. The Deluxe definatly wasn't Fender's answer to a Les Paul in any sense but many of us viewed it as such at the time. It is unique in it's own right and those that expected a Fender LP were disappointed and probably dissed it because of that. I've loved mine, played it to death, really versatile and one of the best necks of any guitar I've ever owned. Had lots of Fender 3 bolt neck guitars and never had a problem with any of them, in my experience more urban myth than reality.
Yes! Thanks for this Vintage II Deluxe review! Vintera has the same reflector plate WRHB design but with AlNiCo magnets (from teardowns on YT). Seth Lover said this about CuNiFe versus CuNiCo and AlNiCo: "I know that when I designed a humbucking pickup for Fender, I changed to cunife. They did away with the magnet on the bottom-the pole pieces were cunife magnets. Cunife is copper, nickel, and iron. There was also cunico, and I suppose the "co" there stands for cobalt. But I used cunife because you could thread that stuff, and with alnico you can't do that-you have to mold it to shape, because it's so hard. By making use of cunife magnets. They don't increase the inductance of the coil, so the inductance of the coil was lower than the other, so higher frequencies were more pronounced. And by winding on extra turns, I was able to get very good bass response with it..."
I was around at the time these were originally out. In fact in 1978 one of my guitar playing buddies in a band I knew got one. I remember being in awe of a proper Fender I had a Japanese Strat copy at the time. Funny that they were discontinued when used humbuckers (Seth Lover designed btw guy who created the PAFs for Gibson) had a flatter board (first Fender with a 9.5" radius) seeing what happened only a few years later in the 80s. They really were for a long time disregarded though. I wish I'd bought one then lol
Greetings from Birmingham - UK. Home of Sabbath & Led Zep / Judas Priest and ….. Napalm Death🤘🤘 As you may guess - I like my guitar dark and heavy. Got a 77 Tele with single humbucker and does the job perfectly. The 75 is on the list. Stay safe and keep music live 🎸
I bought the Vintage II '57 Strat blonde ash body. I've been really happy with it. It was expensive for sure but I'm totally satisfied. No problems with it at all.
I had a 1973 just like this! Beautiful guitar! I got it when I was 10 years old snd played it onstage with my Dad. Two nights a week. I had NO issues with the three bolt neck.
I love it, man! A lot of the 3 bolts from the 70s (that most of my friends were playing in the 80s) were drilled slightly wonky. Added to slightly looser neck pockets, the tightening of the screws would skew the neck to one side or the other, causing either the high or low E to fall off the side of the board towards the upper frets. I'd think that the tighter tolerances of CNC manufacturing of the neck pocket have cured that ailment but I'm not so much a Fender guy, myself, so I couldn't really tell you what their QC is like in those departments these days. You'd know better than me! 😂
That is the gem of your collection imo, I had a 2018 (pre-vitera) Tele deluxe that was mim and I miss those pickups all the time! S. Lover should have called them full range...... So versatile
I have a 1976 American made Fender Stratocaster with a 3-Bolt neck and bullet truss rod. In the almost 50 years (OMG) when I purchased it new, I have never had a problem with the 3-Bolt neck. As long as you respect your instrument, it will take care of you.
So jealous you got one of these. I had commented not too long ago about wanting one of these, and you mentioned the high price in your response to me. I love the sound of these cunife pickups. I want one of these so bad. Hope you enjoy it. Play some classic Rolling Stones for me. 🤘
The vintera 70s tele deluxe has alnico wide range that sound the closest to the cunife they aren’t just humbucker made to look like wide range pickups. I have the roadworn version from 2020 or 21. It’s a good guitar. Plus you could always buy the cunife and stick them in.
@@thecappy I’ve considered buying the Classic Vibe 70’s thinline and then have someone put in the fender cunife pickups for me. Might do that eventually.

Looks great, but I'm afraid Fender has simply priced me out of the market. Not saying I COULDN'T pay for one, I guess... just that I'd look at it & always be PO'd that I gave up $2300 for one. ...ya OK, so that is what I'm saying after all, isn't it? LOL I couldn't pay $2300 for one - for my own health if for no other reason.
American vintage is cool like the idea of it. I’m a bassist but do record a bit of guitar. I do like the deluxe tele. But tend to use a Jazzmaster more on the guitar side of things. That being said. I love American standard series a lot more from the early 2000’s from bass to guitar I find them to have a better neck profile and weight. It feels right to me. I also started playing in 2003 so that could be my reason it’s just home to me. I do own a American pro II bass and love that bass so it’s not just that the year but I do always come back to my older instruments because it’s home to me. I do have issues with pickups in those instruments versus newer instruments it’s mud city in most but a pickup change has been good to me and buying an older instrument that’s currently not vintage will save you money my last 2004 bass cost me 1300 verses a newer one costing close to 1800 if it plays right in your hands and sounds good it’s a win either way
I'm so glad that the CuNiFe pickups, and teles are back. I hope they never leave Fender's catalog again. They seem to have done a great job with these guitars. They even put 1 meg pots in them. I have a 2011 AVRI 72 thinline, and hope to get one of these new thinlines as a number two.
I had a G&L BASS with a 3 bolt neck-plate, and there were no stability issues at all. I'd file these supposed problems under "Urban Myth", probably the result of Fender purists hating on ANY changes made to the design, especially by CBS. Those Cunife pups that are so fondly thought of now were dropped along with the original Deluxe & Custom Tele models. Anyway, 3 bolt necks look COOL!
I had a Tele thinline with the micro tilt neck and never had any trouble with it; had the guitar 23 years and never adjusted it once nor needed to- took the guitar to the far southern town of Dunedin (NZ) in the middle of snowy winter and to the Northern (NZ) town of Whangerei in the middle of sunny summer, and only retired the guitar after the frets were literally almost completely worn down, but had no problem withe neck socket.
It's one of the guitars that I haven't bought so far. I like how it looks. I'm sad seeing it discontinued. Unwise move for Fender, this guitar is a nice looking one, enriching their line, classy one.
I really like Teles too. I have 6. I have 3 from Fender and 3 I built myself - and one other 4 string Tele I built from scratch for playing open G slide... - so, seven total. Your sound in the video is a bit harsh - needs to be EQ'd and compressed - I really enjoyed the info and your delivery is great!
This tally got the beginning is absolutely beautiful that has my name written all over it man cuz I love Stratocaster style necks especially big head stocks but I love Troublemaker tele style pickups
Some of the 3- bolts necks would shift suddenly under tension of hard playing, throwing the tuning and sometimes intonation out of whack, I have heard that this was really the result of the neck pocket being too loose. I had a 74 strat that had this problem.I shimmed it and periodically forced it to shift to release tension. If I liked the way a 3 bolt plays this would not stop me from aquiring it, in fact recently got a 70's ri tele custom (mexmade.) It's a 3 bolt and I love it.
If you just work the pot back and forth you most likely will knock the tarnish off and clean up the pot without haveing to spray etc. Use the side of your hand a work it like a swell. Should be good to go.
I enjoyed the video. I almost bought one of these in new mint condition. The seller was in France and was only asking $700. For it! I couldn't compete the transaction because PayPal was the only option for payment and I had to wait 10 days for the money transfer from my bank to PayPal to clear. Funny. My money was immediately gone from my checking account and in limbo land for 2 weeks. Needless to mention the guitar was sold minutes after I couldn't compete the payment.
That’s a great overview of a cool new guitar. It looks looks an awesome cherry colour, and Cherry has the same letters as cheery, which makes it the perfect guitar for the holidays. Right? I hope you got it before the snowstorm so you could play while the city had a snow day.
Ive wanted one fo' ages..its got so much Kewl vibe. You can't choose it over a Gibson Les Paul...the set neck mahogany , chunky body etc, ...noone can touch the Les Paul - that's facts! It's literally the greatest rock guitar of all time. It is. It's the G.O.A T. C'mon. Don't lie to yourself, you know it is. That being said....i still want a Deluxe. It's an "aswell as" an LP, not an "instead of". Stoked about the new cunife's tho! If i was in a rock band for real, with albums & tours & fans... I'd play a les Paul on the album...but id be seen with a Teke Deluxe on the cover inserts and the live shows. Its got that "different" Cool vibe...its vintage vibe looking...but not like the masses if6 strats, Teles or surf guitars.... it's unique. Did i mention that its cool...?
They upgraded the capacitors .If I remember correctly they changed the capacitors ( I forget , sorry I am old ) from .2 to .47 or .02 to .047 again I forgot exactly what was changed .
There are no 3-bolts or 4-bolts. There are 1 bolt + 2 long wood screws like this one, and 4 long wood screws like all the other Fenders. I feel the actual bolt on the bottom of these 70s, that anchors into a mated threaded steel cylinder, is a much beefier connection. So at least you get 1 bolt here.
"Fun" story: just over a year ago, L&McQ had a Black Friday sale. They put up a list of what each store had on sale, where you had to go to the actual store to get it. I had my mind set on getting a tele, I was pretty much decided on a Player 3-colour sunburst, but there was a L&McQ not too far from me that had an American Pro Tele Deluxe at an affordable price (IIRC, it was about CAD1500). I really wanted SS not HH -- which to me doesn't really represent the paradigm of a tele -- but people had a lot of positive things to say (including one Landon Bailey, I believe) about the Shawbuckers in it, so I thought, screw it, I will pay up. I called them; they said it had sold immediately. I thought, crap, there goes my chance to have an American-made Fender. That evil thing happened where my mind had shifted both my expectations and price point. The MIM went out the window and I ended up stumping up for a brand new Am Pro II tele. Good guitar, but not cheap. Glad you love your AVII. Bit toppy pricewise for me.
so the telly sells for about $3000 and it’s fenders version of a Les Paul I don’t know if I’m on the fence or not but I love my telly and I love Stratocaster’s. I’m looking at getting the gnu ultra Strat. For 2100 we will see but I like your video, so there was a little dust in that pod. I wanted to hear more in the Neck position. It sounded pretty full and warm to me. You know what I mean👍👍🇺🇸
I had a cool California "fat" tele made in '98 I loved it for years and thought it was THE bomb dropper (my only previous tele was a MIK thinline pro-tone that was indeed amazing) until I found out what telecasters were really about. Since then the single coils have become almost the only music to my ears (P90's can be pretty chimey and beautiful too) So, hummers on teles...meh. But, having grown up just south of the CA border (MN) and having fished in Ontario more times than you can say eh, I have a little bit of knowledge of the depth of the cold this canuck Landon B. lives in thirteen months of the year so- I will respect this review
At the end of the video, you mention Q&A Issues. Are the issues with the answers or the questions? And if it's with the questions, I hope this question is ok.
At the time of writing this, the guitar cost £2259 GBP. Seriously that is more expensive than my motorcycle. I think that is an amazing guitar but the price is just to much for my liking. If I was to spend that type of money I would go to the modshop and get one which I could spec out and it would be cheaper and no one would have one like it. The truss rod adjustment would look different, and it wouldn't have a three screw neck plate but I could live with it for the price difference and having something unique.
QC..bought a blond Tele professional. Goes for 2200 euro over here. Was filled with sanding dust, and they forgot to install a ground wire. They said I could have send it back, but we all know how long that takes. Great guitar after all, but little disappointed by the care Fender took.
If this is supposed to be a vintage reissue, they blew it on the shape. By 1975 Telecasters all had the (in)famous “Notchless” cut, where they changed the upper bout to attach further up the neck. That shape started round ‘72, and lasted until the early ‘80s.
70's 3 bolt were notorious for having too much space in the pocket making it easy for the neck to move. It can actually be fixed with sticky sandpaper... But CNC should have solved all that by now ;-)
Hey landon i noticed you dont use strap locks. Only mentioning cuz during a session i dropped my walnut gibson les paul and it almost touched the floor…havent gone withut siince
Ouch! On certain guitars I use strap blocks. Depends on the guitar cable. I probably didnt have them on during this video because I was removing the strap constantly
'That'... was INTERESTING... Had a problem with selector switch on my Strat... Squirt of 'Magic Stuff' (?) and fixed ! and then ? MERRY CHRISTMAS Landon 🥳 from SUNNY New Zealand 😅😎🤠... (Keep your fingernails on Left hand trimmed and the 'Vids' Reviews etc... coming) ! (# Have you ever done a Review on a Hollowbody Archtop ? with or without pickup/s ?) ...
Landon, that Tele sounds fantastic. I always favored single coil Teles and preferred 'buckers in Les Pauls but this one makes me think....hmmmm. Thanks for the review.
Do you find these pickups to be slightly noisy compared to a standard hum bucker? I found they were buzzing like a single coil with higher gain sounds.
I also had to sell a few to get a high end fender in Sept. I feel you bro. Must be cool to crank that amp in your iso room every so now and again. How often do you get a chance to play?
I ended up back at the shop who worked on mine because the lower volume knob was acting like a master volume. When I got there the shop owner went over the wiring diagram with me and he said the wiring diagram with me was correct and that the lower volume pot as cting like the master was correct maybe itis because they are wired in series and not parallel ? .
@@landonbailey but i tryed out of 5 this particular one seemed very nice as im not a strat guy ive had about 5/6 from deals though time & kinda enjoyed it but only lasted a week before i let it go again! I think one of the most confortable designs ever made but no backbone for me to prety sounding like a volkswagon nice & all with the flowers but too jimy hendrix/ stevie ray vauhgn no coleones! To girly for my taste! But thats just me. Even with h,s,s still doesnt shake things around especialy with fender amps & marshall. Just seems brittle even ofensive with that painfull treble. But obviously great for the artist that plays it loud. My view of the thing. On the other hand tele's with hot rails can send some serius thick, sirupy girth . Enjoy brother guess in my town gibson tipe guitars are the most popular generaly speaking. Or my circle i should say cause i cant speak for 6 million people. ✌️👌
8.7 ounces? That’s less than a bottle of water! Edit: that one is my favorite of that whole collection. Followed very closely by the 66 Jazz Bass and the 73 Strat.
Not so fun fact: I bought all of the 70's 3 bolt guitars in 1981 because I was tired of people recording 8 track message complaints about them and sending them to me.
