well, its a matter of taste...i prefer the bassbreakers as well, but there is no denying that the DSL range is very nice, specially when you consider the price...i mean, the DSL40C is a LOT of amplifier for the price..
Pe Peroni it can cover a lot of bases, sure. But I personally never liked the overall tone of the Vietnam made DSLs. I can't stand high gain, so I only used mine to mimic a Plexi and obtain classic blues-rock crunch. I was never satisfied with it. Last year I picked up a JCM 2000 made in England and it wiped the floor with the modern DSL I had (which I sold and bought a Bassbreaker 45, which also annihilated it for those classic tones I was after).
CaptAnderton I'm looking to upgrade my amp from a 20 year old un-branded combo. What do you recommend, I'm thinking Head, Cab setup for the upgradability. I'm into indie music and sometimes gig small venues.
Ben Gale I mean a twin reverb set up is always good cause it’s got good cleans and an awesome pedal platform. But I couldn’t see why you couldn’t get the Bass Breaker head to make that work.
@@ejw3006 I would go with the bassbreaker head. The 15 watt is the only one available in a separate head. The head also has two speaker output jacks. That way, I could buy one or two cabinets.
"As fate would have it, later that day Chappers did purchase that Strat - and as foretold, her name was Zaffre, a moniker which spake of the ancient blue pigment produced by burning ores of cobalt in a furnace"
I have owned my Bassbreaker 15 for a year now and could not be happier with it. Excellent amp. The overdrive saturation is glorious. The only pedals I use are a Boss Super Overdrive for lead boosts and a Boss Super Chorus. My Strat has never sounded better.
Great review! I just bought the 007 combo the other day on sale for less than the price of the 007 head at Guitar Center. Lee is right about the 10 inch speaker sounding farty - it's the cheapest 10 Celestion makes. But connect the 007 combo to a different cab, like my one twelve, and it sounds AMAZING. I agree with Rob - I think this is the best dirt sound of any Fender amp. It's very, very rock and roll.
Bought one used for $400 today, love it so far, it does the fender lo gain clean which is a great pedal platform, the medium channel has a vox like chime, and finally the high gain sound does a great Marshall sound. The only complaint I have is that there is no spring reverb, but that can be handled by pedals.
+Robstafarian I'm not confusing anything. those are 2 iconic amps, and I want to see how the bass breaker competes against them besides, the bass breaker 45 says on the product page it's a tribute to the 59 baseman. and marshalls early amps where based on the bassman. so it would still be fitting anyways seeing as the bass breaker it's an EL84 gain amp
MEDiumInc Virtually the entire history of tube electric guitar amps is based on tweaks to one of three circuits: the Fender Bassman (typically the 5F6-A), the Vox AC30/6, and the Fender Deluxe Reverb (typically the AA763). I cannot be sure which Bassbreaker you want in the comparison because you mentioned both the Bassbreaker 45 (which is substantially different than the Bassbreaker 15 and 007) and EL84 power tubes: the Bassbreaker 45 has EL34 power tubes. I have to assume you mean to compare combos, so do you plan to control for the different speakers? The Bluesbreaker, which was a Model 1986 JTM 45 2x12 combo, used Celestion G12 AlNiCo Silver T1656 speakers; the '59 Bassman used Jensen P10Q speakers (of which the current Italian production is not representative), and the Bassbreaker combos use Celestion V-Type speakers (which are something like quieter, cheaper Vintage 30s).
Biffen1812 Are you referring to my first comment or my second comment? My first comment was terse, I admit, but it was hardly as dickish as the average RU-vid comment; my second comment was just geeking out about amps: where is the harm?
Captain and Rob I thank you guys for this. This video was what led me to buying my Bassbreaker 15. That and I did my own shootout between it and a Tweed Blues Jr and the Bassbreaker blew it out of the water! Keep up the good work Andertons Music.
They also have a great way of being honest, fair, and extremely informative on all their videos! I bought the 15 watt bass breaker, I like it a lot, simple to use and baby it cranks on my start and les Paul! Their duet at the end of the video was excellent! A total thumbs up!
11:13 the reason the "standby" light blink is to let you know that the amp is not only muted, but still active for silent recording or sending to a PA through the Direct Out on the back of the amp... not just a standby feature, but also a speaker mute for silent recording....
I checked out the Bassbreaker 15 watt at the music store today, I was impressed. I tried three different amps and the Bassbreaker sounded the best by far.
I think the key thing to note with any amp, not just a valve, is to mic them up. I’ve made many cheap practice amps feel huge with just the right setup.
I just bought the 15w bass breaker and i am totally in love with it. Been trying to buy one when it first came out and i was not disappointed. In fact, i was surprised just how versatile it is!
I bought this amp because of you guys!! And it freaking is everything I thought it would be. You can get ANY tone out of this with just the eq and maybe a pedal or two
I've never owned a Fender amp but I'm intrigued by these amps. I must say, I think Fender is making such high quality instruments right now. Love that Strat Rob bought.
I've had a few Fender amps, and a Peavey Ranger that's a black face twin knockoff. NONE of them sounded as good as this Bassbreaker. Fender cleans have always been stellar, but this amp seems to do it all. I'm damned tempted to sell off my Ranger and Valve king just to get one.
+Darcy Edwards Cheers Darcy - its all this hanging around good guitar players that does it! Rob, Rabea, Mick & Pete (& there must be others!!) - its such an inspiring place to be right now.
+Rob Chapman do you have an ask.fm? That way you would need to make the 2005 throwback videos that would clog up the feeds of people that aren't interested, and it would let people be able to freely and anonymously ask you questions. If you have an ask.fm already, I'd like to follow you.
THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ANOMALOUSLY ASK QUESTIONS AND NOT HAVE PEOPLE SEE WHO THEY ARE USUALLY ARE THE TROLLS AND MISERABLE PEOPLE WHO WANT PEOPLE TO BE AS DEPRESSED AS THEM
That lamp on the left is perfectly placed haha. Every time Rob is sitting on the left it looks like he has a bright idea! Great playing fellas, I just got a buddy of mine to buy one of these (15w) for himself, I'm glad I stand in great company when I say these amps are stellar!
I recently sold my Blues Jr and just got the BB15 combo. I think the BB15 can do the Blues Jr clean to "gritty" tones but also has a sweet overdrive built in. I like to play without pedals and just use the guitar volume to get from clean to dirty so the BB15 suits my style well. Aside from that the quality of the BB15 seems way better than the BJ from the linear controls to the speaker and cabinet. Plus it just looks cool! ;-)
Rob, i gotta tell you man, thats the best tone ive ever heard in one of your demos. ive been watching your videos for years and youve sold me on lots of gear, but youve absolutely sold me on this one. Fantastic job, well done!
Why would you want to see the DSL get it's face cleaned with the floor? Watching a Marshall get the shit kicked out of it isn't my idea of a good time. 😅
Brilliant video, gentlemen. Thanks for the great work. Whoever edits your videos with the sound effects needs a raise. They are surprising, hilarious and add real fun to the viewing.
I love you guys. Another great product demo that is funny and informative and inspiring. I have to buy the 15W. I don't even gig and am a bass player!!
The 15 watt amp is awesome. Way to go Fender!!!! Thank you for your review. It would've been nice to have a second camera with a small image in the corner of the screen showing you pressing/moving all the dials and switches. Rob, when you had the LP you were constantly moving dials etc. and I would've loved to see what you were doing. I gave you a thumbs up.
Wasn't the Supersonic the kinda loud hard rock amp in the fender range?...and mother of god it sounded nice with the Les Paul through it. For me Fenders have always sounded really nice with loads of distortion like a Hot Rod Deluxe
Not really. The supersonic is half bassman/half hotrodded fender type deal. And fenders don’t typically sound great for high gain stuff. Get them driving hard enough, and they do crunch up nicely. However, things like the hot rod deluxe are pretty much just clean amps until you use pedals. but if you want gain, get a Marshall. That’s what these are supposed to be. Fenders idea of A british take on the bassman circuitry, Ie, jtm45.
Jeeeez...Chapman can play any style, can't he! And Anderton holds his own as well...Outstanding video...I'm off to buy my own Bassbreaker. Inspiring playing lads!!
+benjo12345100 The Class 5s biggest flaw is that it doesn't have a master volume. Which means the creamy goodness isn't really achievable at home volumes.
stefanozurich You're right, but the Bluesbreaker doesn't have a master volume either, hence the Marshall Class 5 is a cheaper Bluesbreaker - type copy.
+stefanozurich and a mini plexi and jcm 800. thats what the people want, or is that just me? Edit: just watched the video, i now want this, and i will buy it. No marshall for me this time.
I've had the 15 combo for a few months now as a backup and I could not be happier(for the money!). It sounds like a mix between a Fender and a Marshall. The cleans aren't the best for a Fender...but if you want cleans, why the hell are you looking to buy a Bassbreaker? I never use this amp on the "Low" structure, mostly it stays on "High". Also, this amp uses digital reverb, which does better with the gain. Capt...you are getting much, much better at playing, keep it up! Cheers!
+Jordan Scotland that is because double wattage does not equal double the SPC and yet double SPC does not equal perceived 2x the volume :D. The perceived raise of double the watt would be somewhere around 23%? depending on listener and tonal frequency
+Jordan Scotland Actually if there in perfect phase relation ship (no one is moving and you've split the signal (exact same signal into the two amps) ) then you've got a +6dB boost (only if the phase relation is stable)
+Ryan K I don't know all the technical terms, but when I play two amps together, my volume gets pretty loud, to where playing one amp, I could be on 6 on the volume, but with two I'm on 4, which helps to stay a little cleaner when you play two amps. One thing I know for sure, they are in phase, because I always play two of the same amps.
+MoANjAmSaiNT 3 dB is the smallest difference in volume that the human ear can detect during a piece of music, so it isn't a massive increase, 10 dB however is a massive increase as it is perceived as a doubling of volume
OMG! The 15W can do everything from Fender style clean while also being capable of high gain tones. Never thought I'd say this, but I'd actually buy this head and put it to a closed back cab. Like you said, not a metal amp, but I think you could get it there with a good boost or overdrive. I might even consider this as my only amp rather than getting a high gain amp and a separate amp for clean.
And being a self confessed pedal nerd, I'd smack that with a clean boost or a Tubescreamer. Just to here it roar; but I can totally see myself downsizing or creating a basic pedalboard that has nothing but time based effects. ...well... Ok, maybe a boost for solos.
Fascist Walrus I don't own a Marshall at all actually :) I own a Bassbreaker 45 head and 2x12 cab. I crank it up to 10 and use an attenuator to get those power tubes working into Plexi territory without going deaf. For the money, I'm absolutely convinced it's the best amp on the market. But I have played Marshalls that were owned by other people that were better. They were also nearly $2000 more than my amp. So I'll stick with my Bassbreaker. I just think the statement that it's a better amp than anything Marshall makes is a bit ludicrous. Better value and better quality are not the same thing.
I've been wanting to play one of these for a while, and finally got the chance a while ago. I really liked it! I played a squier VM Jaguar through it, and was ready to buy the both of them and head to the nearest rock show! Also for what it's worth, that little rig was able to handle any Metallica or mastodon riff I was able to feed it!
The 15 looks to be a winner. Effects loop. Right volume for stage. Three really great sounds. Except for one thing. No foot switching between the gain stages. If the intention was that you'd put pedals in front of it, what's the point of the three gain stages? Hang on, I've got a solo coming up, I'd better get to the back of the stage, take my hand off the fretboard and turn a knob on my amp and twiddle a volume knob. Come on Fender, if you want to make a gigging amp for the masses, add footswitchable gain stages, better still, with three independent master volumes, and you won't be able to make enough of them. Add 100 quid to the price to pay for it, you still won't be able to make enough of them.
This amp does sound really awesome and it also seems reasonably affordable. What I want to see is Rabea use one in a "sound like" video as I don't think they give enough shine to other amps that aren't marshall or blackstar.
I played one at GC on a whim. I believe it was a 15 watt. I loved it, spent all day on it, played every guitar through it, and then nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the price. I am absolutely gonna own one soon
Yeah, I used to have a Blues Jr., and what I've seen so far, the Bassbreaker 15 beats the SNOT out of it. WAY more versatile! BTW, love watching your videos!
Beery the original ones had a recall cause the effects loop had noise. The older ones should all be good now, and any fender certified store can fix it for you easily if you have an old one like I do
No,no, I just like music. Music is made by the pauses between notes. Play one note 20 times with no breaks or changes. now play the same note 20 times but leave a few gaps and maybe change the length of some of them. Which sounds like music and which sounds like just a load of notes? Shredding is just notes, music is more than that. It doesn't have to be blues.
+Mr. Señor That was an example for ease of playing if anyone wanted to try it. The point was that a load of notes all of the same duration and speed with no breaks are not music. It doesn't matter if they are the same note or not. If you sang a song that way you'd sound like a robot, whether or not you changed notes. I presume you subscribe to shredding, if so learn some stuff about melodic playing. Your playing will take a turn for the better, honestly.
The amps you have been reviewing recently! The AV30 was great but I do like this amp as well just because you plug it in and it does stuff. That is it!
I agree on the name. At a glance in the shop I thought it was a range of bass amps, as were the original Bassman amps, only used for guitar by 'accident'.
"a Rat to drive a Fender Twins." That's my setup, man! I have one of the original ProCo Rats that I use for distortion and I have two Fender Twin Reverbs (early CBS era), one with dual EVM-12Ls and one with dual stock JBLs. Together, the EVs give warms and the JBLs have that punchy low and that great high end. That gives my rig a really well balanced tone. And the Rat, while a solid state pedal, sounds great and run through a tube preamp, it has a great sound. People have always told my my rig has a great sound. Now if only they complimented my playing as much, then I'd be set!
I haven't owned an amp in a long time. just building a home studio, so I have some keys, a couple of strats, and a Line 6 Pod to plug into my computer. But I'm buying an amp now. That 15 just sounds amazing.
Thanks for the sentiment Rob. I pray (even though I am agnostic) that we are gonna be okay also! Be warned that this silliness could easily be "Global"! Peace gentlemen...I love yer videos. Keep up the good work, and most importantly, the great sense of HUMOR!!!
Sweet, Fender took their classic Bluesbreaker amp and tweaked it to make a version for bass players. Makes sense, considering Fender is HUGELY famous for making world class basses since the beginning of rock. Also makes sense considering this era we live in where all kinds of companies are taking their products designed for guitars and coming out with bass versions. Perfect name, tells the market and everyone who hears or reads it's name in this increasingly overcrowded world of gear exactly what the product is, so that not only can bass players perk their ears up, but guitar players can quickly turn the page or move on to checking out something else. Once again - PERFECT name. Great job, Fender marketing team.
+Event Horizon Productions What's wrong with referencing the Bassman? I see literally nobody else caring about your issue. And guitarist or bassist who knows anything will be aware that this isn't a bass amp. Nobody cares.
Dom Whiffen oh really, is that cuz you like to walk around jamming pencils into your eyes going "dudurrrrrrrrr!!!" ? The comment just TWO above mine if you list them by time said he thought it was a range of bass amps at first. It's called reality, you fucking idiot, you should try checking it out someday. WHEN YOU'RE READY THOUGH, DON'T HURT YOURSELF!
+Event Horizon Productions Thanks again for this "innovative and non template" RU-vid comment ... You are so much of a a helping guy to us "special people"
Can I say I have never been a fan of MOST Fender products, but this makes me want a Bassbreaker to keep at home for practice and writing. Live I still depend on my CEC Amplification built ASG HYbris. Beast of an amp!!!
