Is the Custom Shop Relic worth the extra money? How good is the American Ultra in comparison? Can you hear the difference in quality? In this video there is a blind shootout of the two guitars - comment below which guitar you think is which!

I'm shocked I thought the American Ultra sounded like the better one. magnificent playing on the Beach boys song that was great. God only knows.

It was the CS that did it for my ears. Much more mellow and organic. The Ultra sounds a bit harsh compared to the CS. Apart from the CS the Ultra sounds GREAT, very hot and direct. My ears like the more mellow sound more though.

Ignoring the actual sounds in the video, the American Ultra is my favourite Strat to play. I consider it to be a platform upon which you build the guitar that you want e.g. replace the pickups with whatever rings your bells.

I'm completely shocked that I liked the Ultra more. I'm extra confused, but also delighted. Changing the way I'm thinking about my next guitar buy. Thanks for the great video!!!! Would love to hear what the ultra sounds like with the pickups changed to some CS single coils.!!!

Guitar 2 is the CS. I'm on the verge of buying a CS strat, even though I own an ultra. Think you've nudged me a bit closer with this video.

I thought it was the other way round. I preferred the sound of the ultra and I'm glad because they're more affordable.

BTW, the Ultra has 22 frets and custom shop has 21 frets. Therefore the string has more space to vibrate on the custom shop. The outcome of that, i don't know. But i'm guessing it will give some more dynamic range when playing hard.

B is deeper sounding, less pronounced mids, seems like more fun to play, so it should be a CS, but I'm always wrong in those tests, so my guess is that B is Ultra, and A is CS (flatter and more harsh sounding).

Also must say, the player is much more relaxed and seems to flow better with the ultra. Looks like he's fighting the guitar a bit on the CS.

Guitar 1 definitely sounds fuller to me but that said I think the most important thing is which guitar plays the best to you! The Ultras are amazing players, pickups etc can be changed. The Custom shop guitars generally don't play as well because they're based on vintage specs. But again, that's subjective.

American Ultra sounds very balance and compressed. There is more depth and dynamic with the Custom Shop. Custom shop sounds much sweeter, more natural sounding while American ultra has that modern metallic sound I think.

Thanks Jack! To be honest you won’t go wrong with either they are both great guitars. I think the tune was God Only Knows by The Beach Boys. Really beautiful changes in that one.

I understand the sound difference. It's a Custom shop vs a production model with noiseless pick ups! That aside, how close does the ultra get to a CS quality wise? And I don't mean laquer vs poly...

The Ultra is the best production quality I've seen for a modern/mass production guitar. The fit and finish on the CS will definitely contribute to you feeling like it's an older guitar with more character, but the neck profiles on the CS and especially the hand-wound pickups are something that no other Fender can touch. I own many guitars (including 3 custom shops and 2 ultras). For me, the CS inspires something that the Ultra falls short on, though the Ultra is 2nd to it (above the vintage reissues IMO).

Love the CS relic sunburst strat. Can’t see the fretboard really good Lewie. Need to borrow your licks. 😉 what yr strat us that snd how’s the neck? Is it chunky or medium? It’s hard to find a thinner neck on these CS strats. I’m guessing a 61.

I would if I didn’t have the relic. I don’t mind the pickups in the ultra as for some stuff the noiseless aspect of them is more important than the tone if that makes sense? Would be interested to see if there are any noiseless pickups out there that have that more vintage tone.

Hey Kenny, In my opinion, I do believe the CS relic is worth the extra money, as you said, there is a difference in sound quality. If I could only choose one, it would be the relic. If you can afford to get the CS I would go for it. One thing the video doesn’t go over is the look and feel of the guitar - which for me the relic feels incredible and perhaps the ultra feels a bit more sterile than the relic. Again just my opinions as I love them both. Let me know what you decide to do! All the best

the neck of the ultra is from another planet, why does fender make the neck of the custom all baseball bats? the old fenders had smaller necks. But the ultras have magnets that don't do them justice, I put the custom 69s in them and they're a whole other story

Honestly..... They sound almost identical. Maybe Guitar 1 is a bit "hotter". Other then that. Id bet if you put the EXACT pickups in each guitar the same.. You'd literally hear no difference. As far as better... Id straight up say... . Apples and Oranges. They both did awesome... so the difference is preference not quality. I actually love you did this.. I thought for a long time.. THere's no point to buying more then the Ultra Luxe... That custom shop beyond that tier is hype smoke and mirrors.

Custom is louder.. More treble. The Ultra Lex is less hot... but more mid range. So choose your tool :)

If you want to save money.... Buy an Ultra Luxe..... And also.. A prewired customshop fender single coil pickguard. Done and done... $390. Save yer self $1000.

I don't get the relic either.... Im picturing the first guy at fender that made the first Relic slipped with a screw drive one day... And just went with it. Thus was born "Relic guitars" Sigh... I hate that thought. Take a great guitar.. And screw it up deliberately.. so it looks like you dropped it from a moving vehicle... Lets charge you more money for that? Just don't get it.
