For anyone that wants to know more about this bass I was the original owner who spec'd it up from the Fender Custom Shop in 2009. Specs are: Fender Custom Shop (Team Built) '59 Precision Bass - Slab Rosewood board, wide C Profile neck, 7.25 radius, 6105 jumbo frets, Finish is Olympic White over Candy Apple Red (Gold undercoat) with Matching Headstock. Heavy relic finish on both body and neck (Though the neck was actually supposed to be left pretty untouched but there was a mixup with this bass and another order and this one ended up getting the neck finish stripped!) '57 Custom Shop pickup. Great to see it in the hands of such a good player! Though it is very, very, very sorely missed!

Fender has been using Alder for quite some time now. Old growth Ash from the early to late 70's was getting harder to sustain, environmental concerns, that is my opinion. Based on reading on Fender's website regarding the Alder, i can't find any modern fenders with factory Ash, like those sweet late 70's usa models.

Been a jazz bass guy for a long time, always missed that good ol' P. Every time I tried a P in a store or heard it in a band setting, I was like hells yea, that's the tone man. Finally treated myself to a gorgeous custom made PJ and now I'm in tonal heaven. I've got everything I need with P and J pups :)

Hi, Scott. Good to bump into you at the London Bass Show yesterday. It was a little strange from my perspective in that having seen so many of your vids it was a bit like bumping into a mate on the street, but you obviously had no bl**dy idea who I was :-). Thanks for letting me play your Custom Shop '59 as that was a really nice gesture to hand your bass to a complete stranger (you're right: that neck is W-I-D-E). Hope you enjoyed the event....thought there could have been a few more stands personally (none of the big names were there, but the boutique stuff was awesome) and some great stuff at the clinics. Keep on doing what you do. Thanks.

This was the reason why I bought a P-Bass last week. Now I have P and J basses, and ... I do recommend for all to test them both. No sense to tell this or that one is better, this must be a subjective choice (like small or big breast issue), but I have to say thank you to Scott, because this video led me to find my choice. Thank you!

hi scott. its funy to see how got into p basses, i have the same epiphany, but backwards. i went from p bass to 5 string yamaha to esp to ricknbaker and a couple of custom ones back to a p bass 3 days ago! lol!... i played one in a gig,just like you and i was like, wat the hell ive been missing all this years... o yeah, my 1972 p bass. so, to the shop and got a brand new fender p bass. please do more lessons with it!

Lots and lots of differences, but you really can't go wrong with either. Main things: P - single pickup. "Rounder" tone. More common in rock. Think Motown, REM, Punk Music, etc. Usually a wider neck. J - two pickups, usually single coil. More diversity in sound by mixing the two. More common in jazz, funk, soul. Usually a thinner neck. MusicMan - one pickup, wider aperture, in a different position than the P. Distinctive sound. Think "Aeroplane" by Flea.

I remember my first bass was a "Black Jack" then In 1974 I got my "Fender Precision Bass". Paid $250.00 for it lol! My bass player friends were jealous. Those were the days, wished I had kept it.Don't even remember what I did with it.Still playing Fenders.
@IAmWorseThanYou
@IAmWorseThanYou 11 лет назад
the 'main' difference is the pickup configuration. the p bass has the split coil pickup as you can see in the video, while the jazz bass has 2 single coils. one nearer the bridge and one in about the same position as the pickup on a precision bass. the neck tends to be thinner on a jazz bass or 'faster'

Great Scott! The P bass was the 1st electric bass that was mass produced,but in 1951 it was like a bass guitar to the Telecaster guitar,(the bass model Sting plays) and it had 1 single coil mic instead of the split mic that came from -57 I think.It was still called Precision,a name derived from the fact that you could play with precision as oposed to on an upright.I believe there were electric basses before,but not produced on a large scale.

Michele Costabile. Leo designed an exceptional instrument. Hid did, however, change the pickup in 1957, so he didn’t think the first design was perfect.

I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one to use my P pickup with the tone all the way off! Thought noone did that :) Coming from a guitar background I' very used to the "set all knobs to 100% and just go for it"-approach, I'm happy to learn it's different with bass.

yep, the P Bass was the first ever electric bass guitar - bass guitar in the modern sense, what we call an electric bass today. as good as I remember it was introduced in '51 :) And it was called "precision" because of the introduction of frets on a four stringed instrument for the first time.

It wasn't the first electric bass but I believe it was the first widely avaialble elec bass. The first electric bass was around in the 30s and was known as the 'Model 736 Bass Fiddle' and was actually a pretty rad looking instrument!. Flatwounds on a P-bass is such an iconic sound.

Early on in my bass journey I recognized the role and the importance of the Precision but I just could never find one that played well. I had a '59 Reissue with maple board for quite a while but we never jelled. I knew then that I needed to look for a rosewood board. I finally found The One in a 1990 MIJ '62 Reissue. They're out there, you just have to find them.

No worries :-) You will find variations on this as Fender also did special orders, but the general rule of thumb from playing the various models over the years is if you like wide necks go for a 50's or 60's P and if you like a narrower feel it's 70's style or swop the neck for one off a Jazz bass (done that on both my Precisions). And as for variations in machine heads...... :-D
