Fender Rumble 500 demo. Really good sounding durable combo amp.

10/12/21 update: still sounding good!!
2/27/20 update.... Amp is still sounding great. Did around 365 gigs with it. No problems.
For all my gear reviews visit: www.stevekonbas...
update 3/6/17- Did first 3 gigs with the Rumble 500... sounded good... set EQ flat with the vintage button pushed in... for outdoor gig still needed to go through the PA system.
update 7/4/17- After 4 months of gigs the amp is working great. Had the amp tip over in vehicle while driving. It took a hard hit but there were no problems so it proved to be sturdy.

In my 50 years of playing, I've used tons of expensive gear like: Ampeg SVT, Eden, Mesa, GK, Epifani, EV and Bergantino. I purchased the Rumble 500 2X10 combo for home practice, started using it for band rehearsal and now it is my favorite amp. I just love the tone and so do my band mates. I am floored by this amp because I am somewhat a gear snob and have always thought that more expensive = more better. I am now considering purchasing the 2X10 extension cabinet for gigs. Also, this is my first Fender amp.

Are you plugging the 2x10 into the back of the 500 combo? Im trying to figure out what is compatible to the rear output. Are you talking about the 2x10 400 ?

I am trying to understand why people add an extension cab to a combo since will be connected in parallel. I am assuming that the ohms will now be 16 instead of 8 which will drop the wattage. What is the benefit ? I find nothing on the internet to explain this.

I have its 200 watt brother. Had it for about four years, used in a variety of gigs and venues. Never had a problem and with flats on the bass.. really sounds like old school tube.

Good purchase, I have been using mine for a few years now and it has never let me down. I also have the 210 extension I use for bigger gigs and at practice. I set mine almost always flat with a slight bump to the bass, the gain up at 12 gives some sparkle, gets me a great Fender sound witrh a P-bass.

Yeah, so far it's been great. I'm running it with the bass and low mids slightly under the 12 o'clock position and the hi mids and treble a little past 12 with the vintage button pushed in. The guys in the band like it too.

I know this is about three years down the road, but here’s my experience. I own the Rumble 500v.3 head, a Rumble 210 Cab, and a Rumble 112 cab. Everything you’ve said is true. The R500v.3 is a little killer! My only dislike is that the built-in Di signal is post-everything. I cannot imagine why Fender thought it would be a good idea to have the Di output affected by changing the gain, any and all eq settings, and the master volume! I placed a small strip of gaffer’s tape over the built in Di out on the amp to prevent any soundmen from plugging into it. I use an active Di at the end of my pedal board. Problem solved
@caucajunman5930
@caucajunman5930 3 года назад
I totally agree. Also no active and passive bass selector button. Playing post out will not give a clean sound. The 35LB 2-10 500 watt combo is unbelievably light. I personally don't like the very sensitive volume control knobs. I'm on the fence about getting one.

Thanks for review. I do bar gigs and send a line out to PA. Is the 100 adequate? What about the 200? Thing with the 200 is it's only $100 cheaper. I played all 3 in GC. The 200 and 500 did sound fuller but 100 still sounded great. You just can't crank it at GC.
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 4 года назад
I do bar gigs too but I wouldn't use the 100 or 200 for a few reasons... first off with a hard hitting drummer and loud guitar player it just wouldn't be loud enough. If you have to push and crank up the 100 or 200 to keep up with band volume, it'll distort. You might get away with using the 200 if the gigs are on the quiet side and your band isn't volume crazy. I'd skip the 100 though. I just got in from a gig and I don't think I had the master volume past the 9 o'clock position, but I'm using the 500. I also use the amp with the vintage button pushed in, which bumps up the volume a bit and makes it round. The 500 also has 2x10 verse the 200 which has 1x15. I think the 500 is about $100 more than the Rumble 200. Hope that helps brother.

@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 4 года назад
It really all depends on stage volume Chris. If your band is doing a laid back low volume type of thing, the 200 might work for you as long as you can hear yourself on stage. Also consider it's rated at 200, but it won't push a full 200 by itself. Although the 500 is about $100 more, I'd say get the 500. I've done over 360 gigs with it and I never had any problems dialing in the tone for a room and always had enough volume. Another advantage with the 500 is it has 2 10" speakers in it as opposed to the 200 having 1 15". At louder volumes, the 2 10" maintains clarity where a 15" at louder volumes can get muddy.

My friend, I picked up a Fender Rumble 200 amp and 1 x 15 cabinet. The cloth on my cabinet flutters like crazy. It drives me crazy. Did you experience such an issue? I love the setup, but that fluttering fabric is crazy. certain frequencies cause the fabric to flutter like mad. How could Fender let this happen?
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 7 лет назад
No I haven't. I'm constantly using the amp, moving it in and out of my vehicle, in and out of clubs, and I haven't experienced anything like that. That front grill is held in with Velcro. There should be a black pull tab hanging out of the bottom right corner so the grill can be removed. If it were me, I'd pull the grill off and inspect it and then put it back to make sure it fits snug. Bottom line is if you're not happy with it, send or take it back. If you bought it at a music store try out the same model and see if it does the same thing. Good luck.

Do you think the 25 w would still be able to achieve that low mellow bass sound this 500 w played at 3:38? Not necessarily as loud but just the same sound, just quieter.

No, I don't think so. It doesn't have the same EQ and sound shaping features as the 500.

The 40 has the same sound shaping features as the 500 but you're not going to get much volume out of it. So you might get the sound you're looking for, but not much volume.

I want a bass amp that can overpower a set of drums... will this do that?

The amp by itself pushes 350. With an extension cabinet you'll get 500. I play with a hard hitting drummer and never have a problem being heard.

I just ordered mine but i'm concerned about the volume will actually produce with the volume cranked up? are you able to keep up with the members playing without having the extension cab?
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 7 лет назад
Yeah Bill, I don't have any problem keeping up with the band with just the Rumble 500 2X10. For stage volume it's fine and for small clubs it's plenty loud. If I'm playing outdoors or a big club, I just use the line out and go into the PA system. I keep the vintage button pushed in which gives it a boost. I don't think I've ever had the master volume past 4. I guess if you're in a metal band and your guitar player has Marshall stacks, you may want to put an extension cab on.
@billstafford8863

Just hard to get my mind to except a bass amp without at least one 15" BW speaker lol. '
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 7 лет назад
You can always add a Fender 15" extension cab on it. I have found that 2 10" speakers can handle more volume than 1 15" speaker. They tend to be cleaner, less muddy, and don't break up as much when pushing the amp.

Yes. I was at the Fender website and they have a 1x15, 1x12, and 4x10. With the extension on it you'd be getting closer to pushing the full 500 watts too.

Could this amp handle hard rock and metal? I play things like Tool, Queens of the stone age, etc REPLY
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 7 лет назад
Depends on how you define "handle". You get plenty of tone out of it and for small clubs it's fine. I play Ozzy and Rage Against The Machine in the course of a night and it sounds great. For me the stage volume is fine and I play with hard hitting drummers. You can also add a cabinet to it if you wanted to. There's also a line out so you can go direct from the amp to the PA.

Hi we just bought one today and when the horn is on the amp makes a loud buzz. The basses that were using have stock pickups and not the best. Worried that we got a lemon. The noise goes away when you touch the strings. Any input?
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 4 года назад
When you have noise that goes away when you touch the strings usually means that you have a ground issue. Try pushing in the ground lift button in the back of the amp and see if the noise goes away. Could also be the bass. Cheaper basses tend to be noisy.

I've done around 300 gigs with it and it's been plenty loud. For outdoor gigs, or big rooms, I line out the back of it and go through the PA. By itself, it's pushing around 350 watts. With an added cabinet it pushes around 500 watts.
