Ferdinand Magellan - First Circumnavigation of the Earth 

I loved the way you showed the map. Like it's some Assassin's Creed game. If you travel there, region becomes visible.

Imagine the stories the 18 men told in the local pubs for the rest of their lives.

It was said that, Juan Sebastian de Elcano, a guy that went on a journey with Magellan, was really the one that had the first circumnavigation on the planet. Elcano was onboard during the whole journey of Magellan. As Magellan died in the Philippines, Elcano took place and went back to Spain.

damn imagine doing this on that time. that was the equivalent of space exploration. going into the unknown having no idea if you will actually make it back. amazing

1524: The Earth is round 2019: The Earth is flat

A few interesting facts: 1. The ships given for the voyage were small because the Spanish government was not optimistic about the success of this voyage that they didn't want to invest so much in it. 2. Magellan had a blood compact with two datus--Datu Kulambu and Datu Humabon, they were the first converts to Christianity as a result of Magellan "miraculously" healing the sick nephew of Datu Humabon. 3. Magellan was Portuguese and most of the members of the crew didn't trust him. Those who joined the voyage were ordinary folks who had nothing to lose--some Italians were there as well. 4. The actual person who circumnavigated the globe was Elcano, captain of Victoria, along with the crew that included Pigafetta, the chronicler.

The fact that there's still flat earthers today makes me cry.

"Over the Edge of the World" is a very comprehensive chronicle (out of many books) of Magellan's voyage. Despite his shortcomings, he is often honored as the greatest seafaring explorer in history.

HBO needs to make a mini-series on this journey. Would be epic!

Quincentennial commemorations of the first circumnavigation are currently happening on the Philippines. Yesterday, March 16 (PhST), the Spanish training ship Juan Sebastian El Cano and BRP Suluan met at Guian, Samar to reenact the first contact between Magellan's crew and the natives who live there. I'm lucky enough to witness these celebrations on my own country. Nice video btw

I probably watched this video over 20 times to do the project im doing. This was a very good video and helped me a lot with my work.

A great RU-vid collaboration that I have ever seen. Between EHT and SH, they really gave it a well made collaborated content that shows the first two circumnavigation of the world. The narration is so gentle yet persuasive to listen, the presentation between the route of Magellan and Francis Drake and giving a glimpse on what happened during that time. These videos really are worth more than gold in RU-vid and I believe that this would still be worth watching in a long period of time.

Next time someone tells you the Earth is flat, just say Magellan

This has caught my eye. I'm a Filipino and very interested in the history of our country and origin. Been recently reading about this and really amazed how these sailors were able to go around the world on a ship blown by the wind.

The revealing of the fog of war gives a real sense of exploration, a greatly done video. The voice of the narrator is perfect for history and makes Epic History TV videos so authentic.

El que dió la primera vuelta al mundo no fue Magallanes, fue Juan Sebastian Elcano que tomó el mando de la expedición cuando murió Magallanes.

The first circunavegation was completed not by Magallanes, it was Juan Sebastian El cano and the 18 members of the crew. Magallanes was not a good manager and had problems with people. JS El Cano deal with adversity better and finish the job. Very interesting travel.

A couple other things... 1) In the mutiny at Puerto San Julian, some of the mutineers were actually drawn and quartered. Quite a bit more intense than the quick sword to the neck. 2) In the Philippines they learned about some freaky sexual practices. Bergreen's book shares the details. 3) They had a Malay (or Indonesian) slave onboard, known as Enrique of Malacca. He was a pretty good translator when they all arrived in Asia. Since he was ripped from his homeland as a teenager, then brought to Spain and then forced to cross the Atlantic and Pacific, by the time he reach the Straits of Malacca he became the first person to circumnavigate the world.

4:35 - Lapu-lapu was the ruler of Mactan. The local chief who "asked Magellan for help in defeating this rival" was Humabon, the ruler of Sugbu/Cebu (if I'm not mistaken).

It’s interesting to see what each creator will leave out in their telling of this Saga or any Saga. You Kinda have to watch them all to get a full picture.

Juan Sebastián Elcano was the first to circumnavigate the Earth. Magellan was killed in Mactan, Phillipine islands. Elcano's success made possible that Magellan is known in history.

Magellan's goal was to find a route to the Moluccas or Spice Islands from the west and return via the Pacific Ocean, not to circumnavigate the world. He died in the Cebu Philippines before reaching the Moluccas. At this point there were two ships left, Elcano took command of the nao Victoria and Gonzalo Gómez de Espinosa of the nao Trinidad, both reached the Molucca Islands completing the expedition's objective. Gonzalo Gomez de Espinosa decided to return through the Pacific to Panama but were captured by the Portuguese. Elcano decided to return to Spain through the Indian Ocean, which meant avoiding the Portuguese routes and not being able to freely enter the ports to avoid being captured by the Portuguese, and the king of Portugal sent a fleet to stop the Spanish expedition. Not being able to stock up in the ports, they ran out of food. They only stopped at Cape Verde out of desperation and the Portuguese captured several prisoners on land and pursued the Victoria, which was able to escape. Enrique de Malacca is only documented to have traveled from Malacca to Portugal and from Spain to Cebu, there are about 2500km between Cebu and Malacca so he did not go around the world. Only Juan Sebastian Elcano and the 17 men under his command can say and prove that they were the first to circumnavigate the world and they did it in spite of storms and the efforts of Portugal to make the Spanish expedition fail.

That has got to be one of the most gorgeous retelling of Magellan's voyage.

Incredibly interesting voyage set off by Magellan even through he perished before circumnavigating the sphere we call the Earth.

This production was both informative & delightful. If narrated videos like these were utilized in grade school, at least to wet our palates, I might have remained better engaged with the subject matter when it came to the details outlined in our class history books. Magellan did not complete it. It was Elcano. And the whole enterprise was conducted by the Spanish Crown. Portugal was indeed aside and against it
