Good video, hoping that my HR-C3 isn't full of leaky caps. I havent tested it since I'm currently working on my GR-C1.

Thanks. If it has the yellow caps you may be ok. Just seems to be the black variants that leak. I have some C1's to work on too.

@@RetroGadgetMan With the GR-C1, what can happen is that there are 5 circuit protectors on the mechacon board. One (CP1) goes to the servo circuit and loading motor, and another one goes (CP2) to the capstan and drum motors. On mine they both failed/blew while it was taken apart. All the unit would do is flash the buttons and do nothing. I have no idea why they blew. They are ICP-F15 circuit protectors. I bought 10 of them but I am waiting for them to arrive.

@@KylesDigitalLab thanks for the information. Hope you get it working. Are you making a video about the repairs.

@@RetroGadgetMan It's hard to film on my Sony EA50 because I don't have an overhead setup. I filmed myself taking it apart to get to the belts. I originally thought the belts were the issue but it was that the loading mechanism needed new lubricant. So I applied some silicone grease to the loading gears.

So I finally got to testing my HR-C3, and what do you know it has a fault. It basically powers up for a second and then shuts down. After reading the service manual it has a flowchart with troubleshooting info, and I was able to find that the input pins on IC3 on the mechacon board has an internal short to ground. The worst part? It's a surface mounted IC and I have zero experience with working with those. I could try to desolder it but I'd probably end up destroying the board. You need a hot air station etc to do it correctly. Of course the surface mount component has to fail. I'm going to try to call up a local repair shop and see if I can find someone who has experience who can replace the chip. I can find replacements online, it's an NEC chip. Another fix of course would be to buy another one "for parts" and swap the whole board, but I would like to save the original board if possible.

Yer these units are quite common. I have half a dozen now. All have problems. I would just get a 2nd unit anyway for spares. The costs of the repair would probably be quite hi.
