I have a 3100/20 too, but I ripped out the battery long time ago. It still works, but the plasma screen starts to crackle now. That will be another adventure to fix it! Thanks for a very interesting video!

It took me two 3100 machines to build one working one. I had an ebay packaging screen glass break on mine..... But I'll did it out on the weekend and check if I removed the old battery or not. Oh and if you have a hot air station, its much easier to hot air the chip off, clean the pads flat, then resolder with lots of flux... Consider soaking the PCB in white vinegar too. then neutralize the acid with distilled water. the alkaline will have gotten under chips, through layer vias etc. and if its not neutralised, it'll continue to eat away.

The little battery is settings, the bgger battery that leaked was the shut down battery, Compaq did this often

Excuse my ignorance but what is a shut down battery.

@@RetroGadgetMan Just a bit of extra power as when the main battery goes flat the laptop can safely shut down. The Compaq laptops I owned in the past were all NiCD or NiMh (I had no why of telling the difference)

I never knew of this. Very interesting idea. Thanks for explaining.

But this is a Toshiba T3100, and it doesn't have a shutdown battery to my knowledge.

@@mgladders Then I could be wrong if toshiba use 2 batteries one for settings and one for clock.
