Ferrari’s BEST Race Car isn't in F1

Now, we know that Ferrari’s F1 team have recently been struggling with a car that is quick over one lap, but doesn’t have great race pace. They also have never been the (sharpest) of decision-makers when it comes to race strategy.
“We are checking”
But the 499P, the new Ferrari Hypercar that was unveiled last year needed to NAIL those things. They had one goal, create a competitive Hypercar that could WIN at Le Mans - over 50 years since their last win in the top class.
So they had to create something that was reliable, kind on it’s tyres and could be fast over 24 hours.

As usual with Driver61 videos not about Formula 1, we once again have to make some smaller corrections. 0:20 - The Ferrari 499p does not have 1000hp. The regulations limit the maximum combined engine output to 500kw (680hp) + - 20kw depending on BoP. So despite having a 680hp combustion engine and a 270hp strong hybrid. it does not make a combined 950hp. The combustion engine gets turned down once the Hybrid kicks in at the speed regulated via BoP. This error is later corrected, but saying 1000hp hypercar is still wrong here. 1:30 - The decision for Ferrari to join the Hypercar class was not because of the financial regulations in Formula 1. While they have helped in the decision, Ferrari themselves stated that the Hypercar ruleset was attractive for them because the expected cost was significantly lower than it was during LMP1 times. FIA / FOM later clarified that sharing information from other Programs with the Formula 1 program as a way to circumvent the financial regulation is not allowed, but I'm sure there will be some wiggle room the teams use. 2:30 - Ferrari uses a Chassis built by Dallara which is very similar to the LMDh Chassis used by the Cadillac and BMW LMDh. Visual similarities of the 3 cars can be found in air intakes on the side 5:50 - Activation for LMH is not at 190kph, but defined within the Balance of performance. Peugeot for example was allowed to use it at 135kph. I will let this point slide however, since BoP always had the Activation Speed at 190kph for Ferrari over the entire season. 6:10 - LMDh has the incorrect name. the h in LMDh has no meaning. No I can not explain why, but in every official document it is called "Le Mans Daytona h". Also that ruleset was developed by both IMSA and the ACO. 6:20 - Far bigger differences between LMH and LMDh than the Hybrid powering rear wheels or front wheels. Far more interesting in my opinion is that the LMDh Hybrid only delivers 50kw instead of 200kw. 6:20 - LMDh does not have an activation speed like LMH, mostly due to the far weaker Hybrid mentioned in the previous point. The rule for LMH Hybrid activation speed exists because there are manufacturers (Glickenhaus and Vanwall) who do not have a hybrid at all 8:40 - Correct for last season, but unfortunately Peugeot has noticed that the wingless design doesn't work on certain tracks. They have already announced to race with a rear wing in 2024 (if they have enough jokers to go through with it) 9:10 - Toyota has had full seasons worth of development in their car. 9:40 - while not entirely incorrect it is presented as a like a big misunderstanding for Balance of Performance. BoP does NOT factor in previous success in the class. It only focusses on the maximum theoretical performance in the next race with that BoP. Which is something Toyota has managed to get very close to, while Ferrari messed up their strategy at Sebring, had a brake failure at Portimao and tyres that were not even remotely up to temperature after 2 racelaps at Spa costing them almost a lap in wet conditions. 10:05 - Ferrari only lead 2 of the 4 practice sessions 11:50 - Ferrari had the issue with the starter twice, but I guess that's still more reliable than the front downforce of Toyota getting destroyed by a squirrel And finally: Le Mans was the only race Ferrari won this season. Calling it dominant is a bit ambitious. Espacially given that their small restarting issue might have cost them the lead with 20 minutes to go if Toyota hadn't messed up the brake balance into Arnage

its a h in LMDh because the ACO wanted Hypercar and IMSA wanted Hybrid 😆 Peugoet seem to have enough jokers as the 9X8 has been seen with a rear wing at Paul Ricard. Also I know the vanwall wasn't even reaching 480KW of power during le mans for 'cooling and reliability concerns' even though it has the Gibson V8 that is in the LMP2 Cars.
@Zanion
@Zanion 5 месяцев назад
@@alexblackwood8465 because they did. Ferrari has managed to get everything right for one race of the season, while Toyota wasn't up to their usual level at Le Mans. Toyota didn't have a particularly bad race and their strategy wasn't bad either, but the #7 crashed in the evening hours and #8 had an unfortunate incident with squirrel and later Hirakawa made a mistake due to him not being informed about the brake bias needing to be moved to the front into Arnage. Toyota has received more weight, because that is what the automated process determined they need to make every team competitive. There are many complaints about BoP this season, but it for sure was not the topic at Le Mans and even in other races it was more thanks to the routine of Toyota Gazoo Racing, rather than them having 2kw more power than they should be. They just barely made a strategic mistake all season, and in the one case they did Ferrari was up to the task.

I stayed up to watch the whole race. Everyone in the GTP class had problems to the point where just about every car had a chance to win, if they just kept the racing clean and hope their car didn't break. Some time in morning before the sun came up, it was clear that Toyota and Ferrari were the front runners and they swapped the lead many times. I believe the Toyota was trying to catch the Ferrari in the last hour and then ran a corner wide. That sealed the deal as they were too far away to catch the Ferrari. It is worth noting that they changed the full course caution procedure at Le Mans for 2023. Previously they had 3 pace cars about equally spaced around the track. You line up behind the first one you run into to and don't pass any cars until the caution is lifted. This helped keep the running order the same and somewhat maintained gaps between cars. The new caution procedure is the same as IMSA. They line up the cars behind the 3 pace cars. When it is safe they then get rid of 2 of the pace cars and have the whole field behind 1 pace car. Next they allow cars that are not on the lead lap in their class to do a wave around and get 1 lap back. Then they reorder the field by class like they would at the start of the race. And finally they throw the green. Yup. They basically hit the reset button every time a full course caution comes out. I'm sorry but Le Mans is suppose to be prestigious. You won because you were the fastest throughout the 24 hours. Letting all the other cars catch the leader at the end and running a sprint to the finish just feels cheap. In other words, it felt like watching a NASCAR race.
@Maenfy
@Maenfy 4 месяца назад
Well that's not quite how the SC system worked. They had to be in front of their class leader to get a lap "back". So that can't apply to the Hypercar class since nobody can be in front of the leader and if they were they weren't lapped yet anyways.

some rules seem to be cool, like that drag ratio limit, allowing cars like Peugeot to have a total different take. But just as you said, they measure the downforce in a straight line and in a wind tunnel. Peugeot's car relies heavily on the underbody of the car to generate the downforce, but then when you try to attack a curb or any bumpy track, that downforce is unreliable at all. Meanwhile, traditional fins and wings will give you consistent downforce and stability.

A lot of the details within the video are wrong. Porsche didn’t opt to buy in a chassis it was part of the LMDh regs. The 499P only won due to the BoP changes. Needs some refinement.

OMG You can't say that! A race car that has only been around for a year cannot be said to be dominant. It's clear that the cars that were truly dominant were those that raced in the early mid-60s, or the Ferrari 488 gt3, which has been running since 2016, or its 2020" EVO" version and the 488 gte has at least a much better career history than the 499p

There is an error around 8:47 - the downforce numbers are measured across various attitudes of ride heights, roll angles, and yaw angles not "measured in a straight line". The various aerodynamic effects of the strakes at these different attitudes are accounted for in the measuring process.

I appreciate the insight into the LMH car. Genuinely, that was cool information about engine development, regulations, etc. I think you did well to cover Ferrari's potential motive here as well. That being said, I do not get your angle here. Drawing the journalistic angle of "this is a dominant car!" when they still got crushed by Toyota is a unique choice. This car won as much as their very NON-dominant F1 team.
